Welcome and good for you for wanting to get out there and get moving.
The best thing for walking is get a good pair of walking shoes and just get out there and do it - every day. Tunes on an ipod or mp3 player liven things up a little when it gets mundane
I don't know what your level of fitness is. Some people just walk up and down the block for 10 minutes to start. Gradually increase your time or distance - however you want to measure and speed will increase at the same time without you really working at it.
Walking is amazing, you will build up your endurance very quickly if you do it everyday - it isn't like running or weight lifting where it is good to have off days for your muscles to recoup.
I see you are from Florida so you don't have many hills or wind to contend w/ but you do have the heat and humidity. Become a mall walker to beat the heat
Walking is one of the best exercises out there
I started walking about 5 years ago Feb. At that time I could walk a slow mile. By the end of the first summer I was able to run 3 miles at an 11 min mile a couple of days per week and walk 4 miles in an hour on the other days - the secret - I only missed 5 days in 7 months.
Just by starting to walk a mile per day my life totally changed - I lost 40 lbs, learned to downhill ski, swam in an adult competitive race, rode a century (100 miles) on my bike and am preparing for my first sprint triathlon this summer.
Life is good and just because I went out and walked that first day and kept on going.
BTW I am totally not athletic - just determined |

Here is a link to some walking tips. My Dr told me to work up to at least 45 minutes a session. Fat burning doesn't start until 22-30 minutes of physical activity.

| I second cyclechic's advice on an mp3 player: I'm learning spanish and upload study cds onto mine when I exercise. Sure beats sitting inside looking at a book! |

Try Leslie Sansone's Walk Way the Pounds Walk at Home fitness programs. When I started out exercising, I weighed about 270 lbs and did not want to walk outside because I felt SO out of shape and embarassed by my appearance. (I also live where it's very hot in the summertime, compounding things). I got a set of 2 Walk Away the Pounds DVDs at Best Buy for about $25 (containing the one mile, two mile, and three mile walks) and started doing those at home (inside). If you can march in place, kick your feet out to the front, do knee lifts, and side steps, YOU CAN DO THIS PROGRAM. I did the one mile for a while, then bumped up to 2, then in time, to 3 miles. After about 4 months of doing that, I started walking outside and now walk regularly, 4-5 miles at a time.
You have to start somewhere, small baby steps, and work your way up the fitness ladder.
You can do it! Let me know if I can help you in any way. Feel free to PM me if you like.
Best! :)

I like videos too. They make it more interesting; there's music, talking, etc. No braving the elements. In case Leslie isn't your cup of tea, there are many other instructors, for all different exercises. You could try out the library or Netflix.
I think there are different local walking groups, such as mall walking groups. There might be classes through community education, too. |
