bagel is the big black one.. he is mostly newf with some Chow... drools and sheds like a newf stubborn like a chow... he's now fat and about 7 amd he's got allergies and a thyroid condition so we watch what he eats...
I resuced him at about 78 pounds from the local SPCA... he was about 2 he's fat now... up to nearly 120....
the blonde is Hannah she's 5 she was a rescue 9 week old lab pit mix but I think she has some ridgeback in her.... she has seizures.... she's my velcro dog.... and she can eat a loaf of bread in a heartbeat (did so a few weeks back when someone who shall remain nameless left it to close to the edge of the counter) |

yeah i'd like him around 90 which would make him very lean....
the vet laughed and said 'he's big boned'
i worry about his hips...
you know what they say "if your dog is fat your not getting enough exercise..." |

OK... then how much and what are you feeding him? and you are wise to be concerned for his hips. Keep in mind that as part chow, his health will be good...my Honey is part chow and at almost 15, she is great!!
But too much weight on old hips can never be a good thing. |

Judy, are you feeding Evo or raw? Just curious.
I am so sad about AdLib. I wish I had known that she was sick, I'd definitely have stayed in contact with her. She was one heckuva nice person, and the world is definitely not as nice a place without her.
I feed my crew a salmon based kibble with no corn. They do really well on it. A dog groomer stopped me the other day on the street and remarked on my Biscotti's super shiny haircoat. :)
My 15 YO daughter had a party last night and the girls who were here LOVED the dogs, who in turn LOVED being the center of everyone's attention. The boys who were here were more into video gaming than animals. |

we have them on regular bad OTC dog food... Purina ONE healthy weight gives the gas so we went to Beneful Healthy Weight and they LOVE it... their yummies are usually baby carrots... they love those....
bagel gets two scant cups twice a day
hannah gets one scant up twice a day
both are on meds so we do meds before they eat....
what we need to do is walk them more... now that the weather is nice again i will start.
of course shaving bagel shows that while he's a bit overweight he's not hugely fat, a lot of it is hair.... we are thinking now of keeping him cut back even in winter... he seems so much more comfortable.... |

| Purina One is way better than Beneful, which is the dog equivalent of eating at McDonald's every day. |

| Maybe the 3 of you could get a room? ;) Or start another dog related thread in GC? I can split this one out if you like from the point it drifted away from Judy's success story if you like. |

I hate to tell you both this but Purina One and Beneful are both thought to be on the low end of dog foods......really not good choices.
There is a great publication that has no advertising budget and only operates on fees. They do a food report each year and rate all new foods....its called The Whole Dog Journal. They do not recommend either of those foods.
Bagel will not lose weight on that food due to the fact that it is heavy on the grain. 2 cups a day is actually not nearly enough for the poor dog. Its got way to much grain and dogs are truly carnivores....they can do better on much less of it.
I don't feed Evo....Daisy, cattle dog, eat California Natural, lamb/rice, 2 cups daily. She's a solid 60 lbs and had gotten up to 64 lbs on food that had too many different grains in it and her poop was explosive. That was Natural Balance, a good food but too many grains for a dog. She was also on Canidae, good food too, but too many kinds of grains and not good for Daisy. When I switched her to Calif Natural, it was because the only grain in it is brown rice and some white.....she dropped 4 pounds and her poop is perfect.
Sorry for all the poop and dog chat...but they are just as important as we are.
Gomez, my shih tzu, get s canned and dry....He's a picky eater so he challenges me daily. He loves the Merrick canned foods, Grammys Pot Pie he loves!! I get a no grain kibble each day, Solid Gold's Barking at the Moon, salmon and bison with veggies...carb is potato. I tried to feed him the Calif Natural but I think that its too high fiber for him as his poops were too soft.
Honey has been diagnosed IBD a few years ago. She gets an Rx diet of a protein and a carb...it was venison and potato...now its duck/potato. She's almost 15 and doing well for an old girl.
Any food you can buy in the grocery store is not going to be good. Sorry to tell you this. If you have a local pet store, go there and read the ingredient labels. I don't feed raw and can't for various reasons...if you can and want to, read up on it as your dogs will do well if they can digest raw meat well. Some can't.
Thanks for the offer to split this out redroxco....I think that its OK to leave it here unless you do not want it here. |

I know a dog named Gomez... he's a huge landseer newf that can carry 5 tennis balls in his closed mouth....
2 cups twice a day is what he gets... 4 cups... and he often leaves over...
he also gets pumpkin and green beans... he loves all food... veggies included....
while i know that they are getting low end foods, I am ok with that as is my vet practice... we had him on the expensive dog diet food.... didn't help.... |
