Lived in SA for a couple years in the early 80s, so not sure what goes on there now and my recollections are based on being in my early 20s, so a different lifestyle shall we say! The Riverwalk is your standard tourist trap area, along with the Alamo. Brian could pull an Ozzy, but probably not recommended. There is a bar across the street where Teddy recruited the Rough Riders. Forget the name of it, but thought it was fun to have a drink there, for historical perspective of course! There is an Institute of Texas Culture (oxymoron?) Museum downtown which isn't particularly quirky, but informational. If you like Tex-Mex, ask around for some recommendations for authentic stuff. Lot of mediocre tourist stuff available. Try some Carne Guisada (spicy beef stew) if available. (no its not beachy!) There is also a King William Historical District which was sort of the artsy-fartsy 'alternative' area to a certain extent. Maybe some other ideas in this link?

A couple places outside of town that are kind of Texas landmarks are Floore's Country Store NW of town and Gruene Hall (just pronounced Green!) in New Braunfels on the way to Austin in the Hill Country. Both music/drinking establishments with long histories and kind of "living museums"!

St. Louis is northeast of Branson on I-44 just before you cross over into Illinois.
