My DBF and I are headed to Quebec over July 4th week. We are interested in seeing historical things, tours, etc.

I am looking for recommendations on where to stay (it is a big place, and we want to be in the action) and where to go.

Anyone out there with experience?

Also, is it going to be a challenge there if we don't speak French?

Well, I live there! I probably don't have the tourist guide knowledge but could possibly help you out with a few things!

Depends on which part of Quebec province you visit: in the Montreal area you'll have no problems at all, almost everything is bilingual but if you go in region, small places or villages you may have more troubles (well from what I know!! but you can always find some ways to be understand!)

Which part of Quebec you plan to visit? Are you there for a special event? Here are some good official tourism sites, one for Montreal and the second one for Quebec province.

Let me know if you need anything else!!

Thanks for those sites, they had a lot of great places. We are going to be mainly in Quebec City and surrounding.

We always head away over July 4th, last year we went to Nova Scotia and the year before Toronto. Can you sense a pattern here?

The falls look amazing, and just a walk through the city looks like it would be spectacular.

For Quebec city it self
it will be a bit harder to find english people, unless tourist.

Im from Quebec, not the city but about 4h drive from there.

My suggestion would be Visit .. ''' Vieux-Quebec '' you cant go to quebec city without going overthere
it's the old portion of QUebec city
Full of animation restaurants, boutique, souvenir
also it'S near Fleuve St-Laurent i beleive, and there you can visit
where a war was held, also a an old kinda castle.
Really nice place.

Justinmeganne -

Thanks for the response. Do you recommend Quebec City as a place to go and stay - are there other places in the Province we are going to miss?

Are you on the northern part or more near Montreal?

I've stayed at the Chateau Fronternac and would highly recommend it! My DH and I rented a convertible to drive there from Boston and it rained the whole time. :)

I've heard great references from my friends on the "Chateau Bonne Entente". I've never stayed there but went once for a massage.. hummm! Not cheap but I think it's one of the best places with the Chateau Frontenac.

Found another great website on quebec city :

We had our honeymoon in Quebec and each year when one of our kids is in 8th grade, the school trip for the year is to Quebec. It is a great place to visit.
The old part of quebec city is wonderful, and that is where Chataeu Frontenac is. We stayed outside Quebec in a chalet, there are lots around, they are less expensive and it is not too far to drive in. St.Anne de beupres (really bad spelling) is an amazing cathedral and there two waterfalls with great walks. The Plains of Abraham is a famous battle sight and only one of lots of historical sights. There is a small island that we drove over to and it was beautiful. Especially in the old city there is lots to see and do, and you should be able to easily fill your week. We found that even though it was mostly French speaking, there were some english speaking people who could help us. And they really liked it if we made the effort to try and ask in French. ... I wasn't doing SBD when we were there, but The Crepery is a great crepe restaurant that you should try if you're gong to plan a treat.....yum
Have a great time!!!
