So figuring that everyone on here is at least a little bit geeky because apparently we like web forums, i was wondering if anyone has a strong computer networking background or works in computer networking and might be able to help me out with a problem i'm having. I'll give the details if someone does, but otherwise it'll be a bit long and complicated to type out. :)

| In fifty words or less, what is the general problem? What brand router are you using and what operating systems are involved? |

Currently I have a satellite modem (tracstar satellite) running through an Edge Access router and into a Dell switch and out to my network ports. I need to hook up an IP VTC system (TANDBERG Edge 95/85/75 MXP) which needs to have either a ‘real world’ IP or some NAT (which I’m shadier on). When they installed my modem they listed two public IP addresses. So I’m thinking either (a) do some funky NAT stuff in my current set up (which I’m not sure is even possible?) or (b) split the IP’s out of the modem (using a hub or switch and two routers?) and use one IP for my VTC and run the other into my switch and out to the remainder of the network ports.
Sorry, I couldn't get it less than 50 words. ;) |

Not familiar with the Edge Access router. How many ports does it have? Can you set up an unsecure broadcast for wireless access? If you can see if you can do wireless MAC security setup. This way you can grab the MAC addresses of both your laptop and what I take is a video-conferencing system. By using this you do a easily accessable wireless link, but the mac security only lets a specific address onto the network. I used to need a VPN at home but have been able to skirt around that using the wireless link and software enabled VPN.
I would skip the Nat stuff for now, that usually tends to get messy.
Then I am not sure why you are using a switch instead of just a nice router? How many PC's are you hooking up on the private side? One IP should service 3-4 PC's with no problem. |

so wireless is out of the question, we're using this in a mobile vehicle and it's going to be around a lot of equipment operating on 802.11 so we can't have interference. any use of wireless devices is being highly regulated.
there is only one output ethernet port on the router. the satellete, modem and router all came preinstalled. i think the original reason for installing the edge access router was because it can be used for phone service too if we chose to set it up. the router is already setup and in the rack... i'm working with what i got here. :)
we have i think 16 network ports, where laptops will be coming on and off. probably about 6 or so at a time. |

since i have the two ips though, can't i just plug the modems output into a switch, then put one of the outputs into the router that is configured for the first IP address and then run it to my larger switch and out to the network ports. then i could plug the VTC (videoteleconferencing) into the smaller switch and confige it to the second IP address. that way i don't have to worry about NAT.
my main problem is i can't run the VTC off the routers DHCP server.. or at least i don't know how to. |

Where are you getting your 16 network ports from?
SO the basic setup is satellite to modem to router? |

| Can you do port forwarding off the router? Has that setup once here at home for gaming and voip at the same time. You find incoming port and forward it to the IP assigned to the vtc. |

| satellite to modem to router to 24-port switch (the router isn't a router/swtich like most of the ones you see now). we have 16 network jacks hardwired into a patch panel, so then i hook up the switches outputs to the patch panel. |

| but the VTC ip isn't static because it's coming off the DHCP server right? |

|
| SO you have a true ethernet switch that allows 16 connections and then uplink to router? |

| Depends on the vtc, does it have it a PC type nic card? |
