I have this deep, aching pain kind of underneath and to the left of my left glute. It didn't hurt until last night at about 3 in the morning when it woke me up because it hurt so much. I haven't done anything unusually strenuous lately with the exception of lunges with 12 pound barbells, which made my muscles hurt, but this doesn't feel like a muscle pain really.
Any ideas on what I should do or what it is? I had a 10 mile run scheduled for today, and I'm tempted to just take some more ibuprofen and suck it up, 'cause I'm running my first half-marathon the weekend after next and I want to be ready. |

Naaaw...... that's a good way to really injure yourself.
IMO... you should cancel your 10 miler for today... take the ibupofen, ice it, maybe do some light stretching (emphasise on light) and maybe a little walking. Then see how you feel tomorrow......
If "worse comes to worse" and you have to skip this run at this point in your training and this close to the race, you should already have the endurance to do it anyway... better to miss one training run than to risk injury and not be able to do your half...
Just my .02
Good luck! |

If you don't already, always stretch after any work out.
Drink more water in case it's dehydration.
It might also be an indication of low salt intake (maybe even potassium as well, but not sure on the latter). |

| If you can go in and have a trainer look at it ASAP, I'd do that, and skip the 10 miles today. Some joint sweilling takes quite a while to go down and if you really are injured, running today could jeopardize the half-marathon far more than not. Otherwise, stretch a lot, and apply some ice. Good luck! |

| Thanks all for the advice! I didn't run today, just went easy on the elliptical and didn't feel any pain. If it still hurts on Tuesday, I'll talk to a doctor (I work in a clinic so it shouldn't be too tough). In the meantime I'll drink water, eat a banana, and ice it up. |

| I am not an expert, but I don't think you should be doing lower body strength this close to a race. I am doing a half the same in two weeks and I stopped doing lower body strength training two weeks ago. I am still doing upper body abd I will start lower again a week or so after the race. |

Hmm... I dunno, not doing any lower body training for a month seems a bit excessive to me, especially as it's only a half. Not that it won't be tough -- it definitely will be for me! -- but lots of people run distances this long with regularity. Still, I am laying off the weights until the pain goes away.
It hasn't yet and it's annoying. I have identified the muscle that's in pain, though, which is a good step. It's the hip abductor/gluteus minimus (http://www.exrx.net/Graphics/GluteusMinimus.gif) and running actually doesn't seem to exacerbate it, it just hurts generally. |
