Cheri, no worries. It's just a joke. DHMO- dihydrogen monoxide. Dihydrogen meaning 2 atoms of Hydrogen + monoxide meaning one atom, of oxygen= H2O (one molecule of water).
Water actually is a big part of SBD... drink up everyone! |

| Actually there was a girl in the Denver area who died of a DHMO overdose about a year ago. She was partying with Extasy, and kept feeling thirsty and kept drinking water. Like gallons of it... She diluted the electrolytes in her body so much that she went into shock and died. Although obviously the X was a contributing factor, she technically died of an overdose of water. Truly, too much of a good thing CAN kill you!! |

| Yes, it can create an electrolyte imbalance. I drink when I'm thirsty. I don't try to force down too much water. Personal preference. 8) |

| Some how this thread got highjacked into a discussion about water! :P I try to drink 3 liters of water a day, in addition to other beverages. I'd say I manage that goal about half the time. Today I had only 2 liters... I suppose I still have a few hours to make it to 3! |

I had wondered the same thing about artificial sweeteners. Having gone for five days without anything sweet, I decided that I had to try some just so I wouldn't give in and go get cheese cake. Instead, I did some research on Splenda, since I know I can't eat any other kinds of artificial sweeteners. (I get that disgusting bitter aftertaste when I try them.) I actually found and read the official opinion of the European body that is like the USDA in the U.S. They get to decide if a new food or chemical can be sold in some European countries. What they decided, and I agree with them, is that the scientific research on Splenda indicates there is a very low likelihood of long-term problems associated with it. Even though there are a lot of websites that claim it is dangerous and will cause all sorts of issues, when I looked at the actual scientific research, it seemed those sites were being alarmist. The side effects indicated in the research were all caused by an enormous dose, unlikely to be consumed by even the most sugar-addicted dieters. Of course, we don't really know what effect eating the stuff for twenty years would be.
So, my conclusion: I am going to use Splenda periodically when I just really crave something sweet, and avoid going into some binge by denying myself everything I'd really like to eat. I figure that if I don't eat tons of it, and I slowly introduce better sweets (like honey) in Phase III, then I am better off in the long run.
Just as a side note: did you know that the ability to taste the bitter aftertaste from artificial sweeteners is genetic?? I thought I was just crazy for several years! |

| Andrya, you're a "super taster". If you're like me, red dye #40 also tastes incredibly bitter and overpowering when it's added to foods. |

Regarding sweeters....this week I saw Fructose by Estee in my supermarket (50 packets per box). According to the box is it fructose (fruit sugar) and is a natural alternative. The nutritional info was:
Calories 0
Carbs 3 g
Sugars 3 g
Protein 0
Fat 0
Sodium 0
Potassium 0
The box also gave diabetic exchanges of 1 packet = Free Food and (I think, I didn't copy this last one down) 5 packets = 1 fruit.
Has anyone tried this, and if so, have any feedback on it? |

| Fructose is NOT calorie free. It is metabolized differently than table sugar and has a lower glycemic index (GI)... but should probably be avoided on SBD. I tried to find more accurate nutritional information but was unsuccessful at finding the actual numbers for calories and GI. |

I think it's okay for SB in moderation, but I'm not sure about phases. Good Fats/Carbs has 10 g of Fructose as "good." There's also a tofu dessert in my Daily Dish thread with fructose as the sweetener, but I don't remember the phase info.
Hey, how do you "super tasters" do with cilantro? I'm curious if there's a correlation between the sweetener bitter aftertaste thing and the cilantro = soap gene. |

| I didn't like cilantro when I first tried it many years ago... I love it now though! I love spicy, hot, intense foods (odd for a "super taster"). I like to add cilantro or fresh basil to salads to add flavor without calories. Yummmm! |

FWIW, I experience no aftertaste with artificial sweeteners (though I do with a few other things), but cilantro does taste soapy to me. Bleah! :P |

Wow. I thought I was the only one in the world who does not like cilantro! It became popular and is in so many recipes and I agree . Taste is horrible, not even like food. Is there really a cilantro= soap gene or are you making this up???
I like the taste of pretty much any other food, alas. |
