It's a program for beginning runners, designed to take you from a non-runner to being able to run a 5K (3.1 miles) in 9 weeks. It assumes a basic level of fitness.
I spen about 6 weeks walking to increase my general fitness before I started C25K, then I spent 3 weeks on Week 1 and I'm just finishing up my second week on Week 2. I will advance to Week 3 next week. I think most people (at least the people who are posting on this forum) are moving on each week. I'm a little older and was a lot more out of shape, so I'm taking my time. |

M_G is correct - a certain base level of fitness is good to have and walking is the best way to achieve that. A person could use the 5 k program as a walking program. walk fast - walk slower to build their endurance.
C25k can be done as a distance program or a timed program. 5k in 30 min in 10 weeks is VERY relative. I don't run near that fast but have a goal of getting to 5k w/o stopping. right now w/ the walking figured in I do a 12 minute mile others do a 15 minute mile - it is all personal
I had a good base level of fitness from cycling and swimming but running is a whole different ball game. I am older (dang I hate saying that word  and am staying longer on each week too. It takes time for the muscles and bones to strength for an impact bearing activity.
Why am I doing it? Because I am a non-runner who is going to be a runner before I die! ! ! in other words for the challenge. :D
Give it a try and join us on the couch to 5 K thread even if you are walking the whole way:) |

Here is the info about the program: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml
It's really wonderful!! I'm in Week 7 and am running a 5K in two weeks... there would have been NO way I could have done it when I started the program 7 weeks ago, but now I feel like I'll really be able to do it. It's very exciting :) |

Hey, this doesn't just apply to us old folks! My 15 yo DD wants to quit swimming, so she wanted to take up running. Well, she's got a really well-trained cardio vascular system, so she popped out 3 miles the first day. That was 5 weeks ago and she's still trying to heal the muscle strain she got that day.
Learned her lesson, though. |

Thanks for all the answers and info! I think it sounds like a challenge and goodness knows that I could use another (*sarcasm).
I do think that it sounds heathly and like something that wouldn't take too much time and would be valuble though, so I belive I will give it a shot.
Thanks again! |
