interestingly i've been really working hard at it for only a few weeks but i already can see where my general appetite is being reduced...
so many folks find it hard to exercise because they are hungry.
me, i'm finding it hard to eat because i'm exercising |

The only time exercise really causes me hunger is usually after a couple hour run ( or something more "heavy duty" like that).
Other than that.... I also find that exercise reduces my hunger.
IMO... for many people that report they are hungry because of their exercise....probably would have been hungry anyway (for any different reason) ....... |

| In his book, Fit or Fat, Covert Bailey says that one way to gauge whether or not you're exercising in "fat burning mode" is by whether or not you are hungry afterwards. If you are hungry, you were burning mostly carbs (and I'm sorry, it's been a while since I read the book and I don't remember if he says glycogen or carbs). And if you're not hungry, you were burning predominantly fat. Or so he says. It would make sense to be hungry after a long run. You're probbly burning whatever you have available towards the end. |

| That's about right. During the first, say, 20 minutes (depending on your fitness level, maybe longer), more carbs are used. When the body gets low on carbohydrates, it begins to use more fat..... then (in sustained workouts) you get into the glycogen stores (and hopefully don't bonk).... you really do feel hungry and need to "re-fuel". |

| I dunno -- I don't feel hungry right after I work out, but in general when I work out 5+ days a week I definitely notice an increase in my appetite, especially before bed. If I just ignore it, I sometimes wake up from hunger pangs, so I think it's genuine hunger rather than some emotional desire to snack. |

| most of the time i'm not hungry immediately after exercise. even if i was hungry before. swimming however is the exception. i'm usually ravonous after swimming. of course usually at least half an hour passes between getting out of the pool and leaving the gym (shower etc) that might have something to do with it too. |

I can just say exercise is the best appetite suppressant I've ever found for myself. I do always need to eat something in the morning before I exercise, though.
The effects last 24 hours for me.
Swimming was the exception for me, too. |

| Oh, me too! When I was on the swim team a friend and I would come home from practice and eat everything in sight! |

I definitely find that I am less hungry after working out! I usually spend 1.5 hours at the gym 3 days per week (I also walk 2-3 miles on my "off" days and take a Belly Dancing class once per week). On my gym days, I come home feeling totally satisfied with myself and not in the least bit hungry. Last week I was having an especially bad TOM, felt really bloated and was craving like crazy. DH told me he would take me out for ice cream after my workout. I thought I wanted it so badly, but when I came home from the gym I felt NO desire (and ice cream is my worst weakness!)
DH is the total opposite, but I think his problem is mental. He used to play football, and after spending hours running and working out in the weight room, he would come home famished and would eat or snack heavily. He has not played football for years, has a nice sized tummy and is quite out of shape, but on the rare occasions I convince him to go to the gym with me, he comes home and insists he is soooo hungry and pigs out. :(
I didn't realize this phenomenon was happening for everyone - glad to know I can expect it to continue!

| That's one thing I have to be careful about, because I too, am generally less hungry when I exercise. I will find myself hungry for specific foods when I am though, which is different from my non-exercising self. |

| When I was in college, I read in a magazine that only fat people get hungry while exercising. I don't know if it's true or not (and didn't then either), but I think I somehow willed myslef not to be hungry while exercising. |

Well, whatever works! I've read that too, but I don't think that is true, certainly it's not for me.
Vigorous cardio (HIIT) (which I'm working my way up to) is the most effective exercise to take away my desire to eat too much. |

I can tell if I've had a good workout if I've literally "worked up an appetite". I'm never hungry during the day and it doesn't take much anymore to make me "full". But when I get home from work and put in a good hour workout - You better betcha I'm hungry! :D
I've learned to eat 4-5 small meals/day though, averaging out the calories to be split between each meal. So, even though I'm not hungry during the day as much as after a good workout - I still eat. ;) And even though I'm hungry after a good workout, I don't stuff myself for din din. ;) |

Interesting. I sometimes work out for 2 to 3 hours but my cardio isn't more than 30 to 40 minutes. Of course, I don't go more than about 4 hrs without eating, per SB. I'm pretty sure that if I did a 2-hour run like luvs to run I'd be hungry.
When I used to work days, pre-SB, I'd think I was hungry but once I'd done a good workout (1 hour) I didn't feel like eating that much. I ate dinner but I only wanted to eat lightly. If I hadn't exercised, I'd feel like eating the whole fridge.
I'm sure alot of it is about anxiety for me. But I take the hunger cue and am sure that my body is physically hungry. I'm so glad I'm finally learning to use exercise to relieve anxiety, instead of eating! |

I am with you there!
I am training for a sprint triathlon so am swimming, biking and running. I have been concentrating on the running because that is my weakest (non-existant) area.
When I swim I too can eat everything in sight and even when doing master level workouts 3x per week for an hour I never lost a lb (had great shoulder and back muscles though :)
Cycling is a more delayed reaction - I have to eat well, before I go and if I am going on a longer ride have at least 8oz sports drink and a granola bar or trail mix by 1.5 hours into the ride. I am hungry when I am done but not famished like I am w/ swimming
running on the other hand does suppress my appetite. I am not running a long ways (usually 5k at a shot) and not fast but I am not hungry for at least an hour or more after I am done and even then not famished.
Running is the only exercise that seems to help me lose weight (the others do make me strong however)
We did a mini practice tri (1 hour ttl, 400 yd swim, 6 mile bike, 2 mile run) my HR monitor said I burned 727 cal. I WAS hungry after it :D |
