I just bought a step today to do step aerobics and was wondering if anyone else has done or is doing step aerobics right now?

I picked up my step at a local thrift shop before Christmas and have been using ever since. I used to step at the gym all the time. It's one of my favorite workouts. Are you using a DVD?

I've looked through the DVD that came with the step but very quickly realized that i am completely uncoordinated and need to work on the basic moves so I need to find a beginner one. I probably will have to buy one on line.

I use a lot of the workouts by "The Firm," many of which are available at your local megamart. I'd recommend renting them from a video store or from NetFlix to see if they're workable for you - always a good idea to watch it before you actually try it! They combine step with on-the-floor low-impact aerobics, as well as some weight work (you'd need to get a small set of dumbbells) ... the newest ones use a step you can incline, so the older ones would probably be a better choice.

I like them because you see results FAST, since they mix all the different things, including weights. Many are only about 30 minutes, though there are longer ones as well. Also, they ALWAYS have one person who is demonstrating modified moves for beginners.

Also, though it doesn't use a step, I like their "Power Yoga" video - very doable, even for a beginner, and they give really good directions and demonstrations of the movements without calling them by the "yoga" names (downward dog, etc.).

Have fun!

If you live near a gym that has BodyStep, you might want to try that for a fantastic step class. I am totally addicted to it.

I have been doing step aerobics forever and absolutely love it! It is definitely my workout of choice. Kathy Smith has some decent tapes ('Great Buns and Thighs Step Workout,' 'Power Step Workout') and so does Kelli Roberts ('The Ultimate Step Workout,' and, if you can believe it 'Cher Fitness, A New Attitude, featuring Kelli Roberts). They're fun to do and like Laura said, you'll see a difference almost immediately. Have fun and good luck!

FitTv also has some decent programs that occasionally feature step. "Caribbean Workout" is a 30 min. show as well as "In Shape With Sharon Mann". Cathe Friedrich has one titled "Lo-Max" and it's a 60 min. step workout with intervals designed to work the thighs and butt. There is a 60 min. episode of "All Star Workouts" that is strictly step, but it's not for the choreography-challenged. I have to be in the right mood or I get frustrated with that one. Cathe Friedrich is my favorite of all of them, but I swear she has something against my quads. :D

Hey! I'm a stepper! I do BodyStep at my gym....love it....sweat drippin off your nose kind of work out. It sure will be easier to step when I lose a hundred pounds. Been stepping for a long time...on and off...depending on my fitness level, etc. But I'm on again! Yeah! :D

Cool! Glad to see the step craze never has died! I am honestly trying to get a whole workout in! Between the dog jumping on me, and DD#2 trying to "do as mommy does" on the step......well lets just say its still a work in progress. I managed to do 15 minutes yesterday before I got totally fed up and quit.

I have been in classes where I was the only male and in other classes in which the instructor and I were the only males. It is just too much fun and too good a cardio workout for that to be!

A thought about including the kids ...

I have 3-year-old twins, and they love to join in when I work out as well. I ended up getting small rubber-bottomed stools (very low, 3-5"), and even found some 1/2 lb. weights for them. They don't tend to stick with me for more than a minute or two at a time, and I keep an eye to make sure their form is good, but it actually works out well!

Generally, though, I work out first thing in the morning, before they're awake.

Ha Ha...sorry. I am trying to figure out how to do the 'quote' thingy. Anyway, we have the same thing happening in my gym, BUT, I am happy to say that there are usually 2-3 guys who regularly join the class. It keeps the instructor on her toes too....has to watch it when she says 'Come on Ladies'

It's such an amazing cardio workout I don't get why more men don't try it. I wonder if it's the 'I can't do it, I'm not coordinated enough' thing.

Keep Steppin!

Cheers
