I look HORRIBLE when I run inside or out! I am not a natural runner and my body doesn't "flow" like the good runners that I watch. But what is the worst is my face gets REALLY, REALLY red! I always look like I am ready to die. I actually don't feel that bad but everyone else thinks I do :P
and the redder my face gets the blonder/whiter my eyebrows look. I am really a sight to behold.
Do I care? not anymore - that is one of the blessings of being 50
Treadmill vs outdoors - from a non-runner who tries hard. Outdoors is more difficult for all the afore mentioned reasons. And here you also have the wind to contend with. BUT in the long run it is much more interesting.
The trick for me was to learn how to dress. When running inside on a treadmill you can always wear the same thing. outside is way more variable. |

| I had the same fears! Last year when I first tried to run outside (I don't belong to a gym so I had to be outside) I would walk/run at night around 9 or 10pm when it's dark and when there barely no one on the streets. It really helps! This year I also started at night but Saturday I did my first run in the sun at around 11am. It was so great! I think it's all about confidence... I don't feel really attractive either but HEY who cares if you see my big butt jiggling up and down  at least i'm TRYING to do something good for me! Try it, maybe it's not that bad after all!! |

| Do you have a dog or know of a friend's dog that you can borrow? I've noticed that more people look at my lab instead of me plus she gives me company and motivation to get out the door. Just keep it up....YOU WILL GET THERE! |

| It's funny you should mention that. I told my husband I'd exercise outdoors if he got me a dog. If I were to borrow, I'd never get one of my own! |

Hey all!
I too "like" the treadmill. Its so darn handy. I mean it displays your exact time, mileage, heart rate, calories burned, pace etc. Having recently completed the Couch to 5k program I really thought it was great for that program, particularly in the beginning when there is so much clock watching 30 seconds of this 90 seconds of that, 2 mins here, 5 mins there. it made it easier when it was all i could do to make it through ya know? instead of having to constantly check a watch etc.
I did two "fun" runs outside during this time (about a mile each)...i use the term fun loosely because for me outside sucked big time! i mean its way harder, of course if that was the only issue id be determined to push through. Because ive only run on a treadmill since highschool my gait is all wrong and when im outside i feel STRANGE my body feels all misjointed, im uncomfortable, i cant find my stride etc etc
That said I intend to get out there eventually, I too have aspirations to do a 5k (and then well see from there  ) and knowing that it will be OUTDOORS, i realize ive gotta train outside. Im not even quite running a 5k on the treadmill and as i said outsid eis HARDER. Once im quite confident in my running ability I think it will be easier. I also think starting out on grass would be very helpful. I intend to make use of a school field.
Sorry this is a little long but ive been a tad consumed with everything to do with running lately :D and this particular issue has loomed large in my mind. |

| Don't worry about people staring or laughing...nobody is judging you for getting up and doing the right thing! Seriously...I love to run outside and if you are willing to run in the dark you can avoid the heat. Just make sure you wear a blinking light or something so you don't get run over. When my husband and I see someone running (especially someone who is obviously trying to change their life for the better by losing weight) we cheer for them! They can't hear us of course because we're in the car and they are listening to an IPOD ...but it's great to see people get out there and do what they want to do and need to do for their health! So please don't worry that people are thinking strange things...99% of them will be thinking "that's what I should be doing right now" Find a temp that feels perfect for you (67F for me!)...then check the hour-by-hour weather on the internet and run when its going to be your "sweet spot". I say forget the dog...looks to me like they just interfere with your stride unless you get a very obedient dog! Have fun, add only a day a week outside for a while and get used to it. You may find that the scenery, your music, the breeze all distract you enough that sometimes you forget that you're running and sweating and just enjoy yourself! Sorry, didn't mean to write a novel...just wanted to encourage you! |

my dog is much more of a hindrance than a help when running. i mean i love her do death but... having to stop when she needs to pee/sniff/scratch/whatever doesnt really help much, and it can be quite dangerous to both of us if im not paying attention. and running with a poo bag isnt so great. i will take her out running sometimes, but not if im trying to seriously accomplish anything.
however, i do find that running with someone is great. i have a friend who i go with 3 times a week, and it makes a world of difference. even if we dont really talk when we are running, its nice to have someone there.
and i just realized what i said doesnt have much to do with the original question. i have NEVER ran on a treadmill, and by what i hear here, i dont know if i will. i had no idea how different things are between the two! |

I will consider myself to be a non-runner runner, haha..
Most people my whole life have looked at me when I said I was a runner and said, you? Run? HAHA You're joking! I've not been very big my whole life but I'm just not built like a runner. "Thick" I suppose is the term, I have wide hips and a big chest, so when I run I don't look graceful with all that swinging and bouncing!!
That being said, I think treadmill or outdoor really depends a lot on what type of person you are, and what type of mood you are in. I can run outside but only if the weather is perfect, I'm in a good mood, and I have a partner. I can run inside but only if I am running alone!
My issues with running outside is that I have a slight fear of something happening to me while I'm alone in public and focused entirely on something that's not my surroundings and the people in it.. on top of that I have had bad injuries from stepping wrong on a bump or into a hole while doing cross country, and I HATE IT when I have to run near cars because the exhaust just makes me gag and feel sluggish. I need a partner to focus on, to make me feel better about being out and not paying attention as much to who may be around, and to get me out in the first place!
Inside, you don't get all that fresh air... and you don't get the excitement and change of pace of looking around. On the plus you are right there next to your water, you can do something to entertain yourself (watch TV for instance), and the temperature is controlled.
Sometimes one is better for someone and one is worse, sometimes people switch it up.. it just depends on what feels comfortable.
At this precise moment water access (I hate running with something in my hands) and the fact that I am embarassed by how I look keeps me from wanting to run outside.. I am hoping that will change! |

so *pat on the back* I ran outside this weekend!!!! Sunday was beautiful and perfect temps and I just did NOT feel like driving all the way to the gym for a run and I knew I had to work out so I thought of this board and figured now is as good a time as any.
It is definately different. There were moments where I really enjoyed it and moments when I absolutely wanted to die  Nonetheless, I will definately try it again this week and see how it goes. I am starting week 5 of the couch to 5k so I don't know how well itll work out transitioning but I'll push myself and see what the results are.
I will always be a treadmill girl and love it but I understand if I ever want the Boston Marathon I gotta start outside!!!! |

Hey everyone!
I am back to South Beach (my second time around), but I am currently in week 4 of the Couch to 5K program. I have been running on and off for the past 4 years. In the past, every time I got to a mile 1/4 (without walking), I'd stop. Finally, I ended up convincing a friend to join my gym and train for a 5K with me.
It is so refreshing having someone to train with. I would encourage all of you to ask your gym owners if they would be interested in allowing you to start a group at your gym (something my gym owner is thinking about, since she routinely runs 30-40 miles a week and has run in many marathons). You'd be surprised at how many people would like to learn how to run, especially for good causes!
I always find working out with someone a lot easier to get through this process - trust me (LOL!) - I've been doing it for 4 years!
Good luck to you all.
