I have a group of friends who meet once a month for book club. It's been going pretty well. I am hosting in May while my dh is out of town (easier that way) and I need to pick a book.

I like all types of books from classics to smut  . Some I've recently really enjoyed: When Crickets Cry by Charles Martin, The Constant Princess by Philippa Gregory, and Between, Georgia by Joshilyn Jackson. The book club group especially liked What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day by Pearl Cleage and One for the Money by Janet Evanovich. I enjoyed those too and wouldn't mind some more light-hearted reading.

Any ideas? Books with book club questions in the back are especially helpful 8) .

Thanks,

Anne

I really want to read The Thirteenth Tale by Diana Satterfield. Unfortunately, I've been in a reading slump the past few months and can't get into anything. I had a request fo TTT at the library and I finally got my hands on it and couldn't read it. I'll have to try again in a few months.

Anyway ~ here's some additional info, book club questions, etc., if you want to look into it:

"Saving Fish From Drowning" by Amy Tan. (ISBN-13: 978-0345464019)

It's got the book-club info at the back, and it's a dandy book. I loved it.

SheriB--thanks for the idea. I ordered it to try it out. I don't have to decide for a couple weeks.

for a group of ladies, "eat pray love" by elizabeth gilbert is a good read, and since it's a penguin book, i THINK it has book club questions. i'm almost done with it and it would be really interesting to sit and discuss different perspectives. it's about one woman's journeys in italy, india, and bali and her process of healing and self-discovery.

i also just finished "towelhead" by alicia erian. very thought-provoking discussion about coming of age, cultural identities, and abuse [and also very well oriented for a group of women].

"wild swans" by jung chang was also excellent.

Thanks A-Rod. After reading the descriptions, "Eat, Pray, Love" may work for our group. I ordered it to try it out.

I'm reading Eat, Pray, Love as well and its really good. I also love anything by Jodi Picoult- all of her books have questions in the back for book discussions and they will definately keep you interested...she is my absolute favorite author!

We read Jodi Picoult's "My Sister's Keeper" and LOVED it! We are trying to use different authors for right now though.

Thanks!

Has your group done The Red Tent yet? Or The Kite Runner? I know they're older but they were two that everyone in our group liked.

Another interesting and funny one for women is "Round Heeled Woman" by Jane Juska. It's a true story about a woman that puts an ad in the paper that says: "Before I turn 67 next March, I would like to have a lot of sex with a man I like. If you want to talk first, Trollope works for me".

I recently read "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See.. picked it up at Borders and it was very moving and thought provoking.. not sure if it has questions though.

these were both EXCELLENT - i especially loevd "the red tent".

other ideas i thought of:
"the time traveler's wife"
"the memory keeper's daughter"
"the mermaid chair"

kind of fall into the chick-lit category, but they were all decent reads. time traveler's wife was my favorite of the three.

You are all AWESOME! Thanks for the help! I've forwarded some titles and descriptions to my group for the decision...but will definitely read some of the others they don't choose!

I am a avid reader. A book every day or two. I love horror novels mostly.
But....
The book that has stuck with me through everything is Follow the River by James Alexander Thom. It is a true story of a womans struggle to get back to her family after escaping the indians.
Here is one review that says exactly how I felt reading this book

Did you ever read a book and feel you were in it? This is how I felt reading this fabulous woman's story.

Follow the River is set in a 1755 Virginia settlement. Mary Ingles is 23, has two children, and is pregnant with her third when Shawnee Indians obliterate the settlement and kidnap her, her children and two other adults.

I can't find words to describe her new life. She stays with the Indians for months but believes that some day she'll return to her people and her husband. She knows that to accomplish that, she'll have to make sacrifices.

This book is full of emotion and hope. The plot is fabulously told and ... just read it! I loved it and for the first time, I finished a book in less than a day. I couldn't stop; it is so intense that I always wanted to know what would happen next.

When I read Follow the River, I was with Mary Ingles, or maybe I was inside her ... I saw everything as if I were behind her eyes. I've never felt that way before.

Just know that at the beginning there is a description of a indian attack on her home that is a little brutal.

Hands down the most compelling book I have ever read. After finishing it I couldnt' read another for a week which is unlike me.
