Hi everyone,
My DH and I are thinking about purchasing an elliptical machine next year. Does anyone have one that they like? If so, what kind is it, where did you get it, how much did it cost (if you don't mind me asking :))?
We already have a bike and a treadmill, but I really enjoy ellipticals, so...I thought it would be nice to add one to our "fitness room." ;)
Thanks! |

cort....
I have an upper end Precor.... I bought it last spring at a yard sale (like new) for $100....
The lady said it was "just too hard for her".
Yard sales and the newspaper are great places to look.
Especially right about now.... as all the "New Year's Resolutioners" .... are probably ready to get them out of their houses (and put the clothes on hangers in the closets)!! :D |

Good idea, Luvs! I didn't even think of that...and I'm a reporter, so I have access to tons of newspapers full of classified ads...I'll check it out. ;)
How much does a good one cost new? |

Mmmmm... I am clueless, I wasn't even in the market for one.....
but it's nice to have for x-training occasionally.
Maybe check out the Precor website? Or "google" ellipticals and see what other brands are out there? |

We're looking at Nautilus, Octane and Precor. Expect to pay at least $2K for a new Nautilus or Octane; the Precors would probably be $3K and over.
I've tried the Nautilus and the Octane, both were nice; haven't had a chance to try a Precor yet. Make sure that whatever you get has an adjustable stride length if you have short legs. |

I would recomend getting a machine that has built in incline, moving arm bars, and a good high resistance level, and if not cost prohibitive - built in heart monitor. You can get an awesome work out - with enough variance to keep you going. (runners please dont kill me) I hate running - and this is a perfect full body aerobic piece of equipment.
Also another possible option - i saw that my gym is now introducing arc trainers. What seems apealing about these is that they appear to have a larger range of motion - but I haven't tried them. http://www.peertrainer.com/LoungeCommunityThread.aspx?ForumID=1&ThreadID=16826 |

Hey, I have one of those! Proper, bona fide home gym. Kinda of like a small hotel one. Mirrors, TV, two treadmills, stationary bike, a entry-level Smith machine (so I can lift safely solo) and free weights.
I still need to get around to painting it properly and putting some stuff up on the walls. Maybe this year.
Anyhow, Precor makes great ellipticals. I have a Precor treadmill but it's really ellipticals that they lead the market in. |

PB: I have a home gym, too! I am so lucky. We have a really nice Landice L8 treadmill, Schwinn spinner, Bowflex, NordicTrack (now unused), and free weights. We also have a couple of medicine balls the my DD and I fool around with and some miscellaneous stretch bands, step, yoga bricks, etc. And now we want to add the elliptical. My oldest daughter jokes that she should quit 24 Hour fitness and join my gym.
No mirrors, yet, though. Still working on it. |

| We have a Precor, it's an excellent machine but pricey. Somewhere around $3K. |

i'm so envious of those of you with home gyms. i have a spinning bike that i don't use because there's no room for it in my apartment, and it's in the garage.
my gym has precor ellipticals [i think every gym does] and they're great. votes for those with moving arm bars. |

Hope it's not too late ... I have an Image 9.5 that I got at WalMart for less than $400. It has a heart monitor, moving arms, magnetic resistance, adjustable incline, a variety of programs/settings including i-FIT, and is made of pretty heavy-duty materials. It occasionally makes some noise, but not bothersome, otherwise I'm completely satisfied with it after about six months of (moderately  ) steady use.
I love my elliptical ... you can get a good workout and not break the bank like you have to with a treadmill to get a high-quality machine. |
