The first time I really dieted to lose serious weight, besides some weight lifting, Tennis was a big part of my success.. I'm not talking about lolly-gag Tennis like hitting the ball back and forth nicely. I'm talking about competitive tennis.. You don't have to be a pro or even that good. Just start somewhere and you'll get better..

Exercising doesn't always have to mean running, jogging, spinning or stationary bike riding (or stair climbing, etcetera).. It "could" actually be "fun" and something you look forward to doing.

So does anybody play tennis? With somebody that can actually keep you running around chasing after the ball?

Play with someone who is terrible and you'll get in a lot of running and chasing after the ball.

I don't play tennis, but my kids pediatrician lost almost a 100lbs adding tennis for her exercise along with a healthy diet. She has kept the weight off for over 10 years now.

I do own a tennis racket though!...bought it 10 years ago after I saw her results! I finally figured out that you actually have to go outside, and use it to PLAY tennis in order to get the benefits of the exericse! LOL! LOL! LOL!

Tennis is amazing excercise. I took 3 courses starting with the newbie course - and my coach was perfect! He got me into a beginning women's doubles league and I got into good shape that season! (Even though I was ranked lowest LOL - the other women were so nice about it though). Im really sorry I stopped playing, but it really does whip you into shape!

I didn't get serious about tennis until I took those lessons though . .before that I was the lolly gagging type that you talked about LOL

That's very true! But it might not leave much incentive to play after the first time. :p

Wow! Aweseome.. 100 pounds.. And imagine.. She had funny losing every pound. That's what I feel is the most important part of exercising. When it comes to the treadmill or stationary bike - there's just not enough incentive to do it. I guess the best incentive is reading a book or listening to music. But really. Playing a sport that you enjoy makes it easy to lose weight.

Now you just need to find a tennis partner. Not exactly easy, for one reason or another...

If you don't mind me asking.. How much did the lessons cost? I've been living in a condominium complex for 3 years and haven't seen one person play tennis in all this time. And, I'm home all day and almost all night every day. What the heck?

I'm moving to a new community that looks a little more lively, however. So I just may get in some tennis soon. However, worst case scenario, maybe I'll just go for lessons to get some play-time...

Well, this is for California, but I went through the city's park and rec department. They offered lessons for about $60 when I took them, now they are $70.

I'm with you! I think a huge part of the reason that I lost so much weight last summer was because I was playing 2 hour tennis matches w/ my dad anywhere from 2-4 times per week. He would get me running too - he'd puposely hit the ball at opposite ends of the court so I'd have to sprint back and forth and back and forth. I was was pretty good by the end of the summer! Now I just need to find someone to play with me - I need someone who is good, but patient enough to play with someone who is not-so-good (i.e. me!)

Hmm.. I'm guessing that's for just ONE lesson. Right? If so, I kinda understand why. They don't want just anybody playing on their courts - rather respectible people who can afford to...

That's exactly it. He was playing competitive tennis. TRYING to make you miss! That's the name of the game. Either make the opponent miss, or be off-balance enough to return the ball and hit the net or be too wide or long...

2 hours of competitive tennis is great! I would actually be so disappointed when my tennis partner couldn't or didn't want to play.

It's better to have somebody who's just a little better than you. This way you're not getting frustrated - and you have a goal - to get better than him/her. And yes, a patient opponent does help. :p

We all have to start somewhere...

I don't know why it's so hard to find people to play tennis with. To me, it's my favorite outdoor exercise...

I love tennis!

I was a ranked junior player, a state champion in high school, and played NCAA. My dad is a retired teaching pro.

Taekwondo is my thing now, but tennis rocks!

Actually - he wasn't trying to make me miss anything. If he wanted me to miss, he's good enough to make me miss. LoL! It's no fun for him if the ball isn't kept in play, so he just makes it enough of a challenge for me to get it. He was just trying toget me to improve my skill on running backhands and getting balance on running forehands. That's why it's so great playing with him! He could totally smoke me, but he wants it to be a work out for him too so he doesn't. I need to find a parnter like that where I'm living now! LoL!

Cool. I'd probably HATE playing tennis with you! You'd probably have me running away from the ball.. :p

I made it to a red belt with a brown stripe in Tae Kwon Do as a kid.. After that, I moved on to other martial arts interests. It was a great first experience, however..

That's pretty cool then.. It takes skill to place the ball like that.. Yeah, I wish I had a tennis partner these days. But, like I mentioned - I'm moving and I think I will soon.. I hope....

I wonder how the virtual tennis is.. The new video game consoles (I really know nothing about these things) have the ability to make you exercise.. In tennis, you actually hold a wand of some sort in your hand - and when the ball comes at you, you swing.. It's better than nothing, I suppose..

I wonder how long it'll be before you put down a flat mat that you can run on. That would really be interesting...
