Spinning can actually be customized to your own level, just make sure you know yourself (a HBR monitor is ideal), when you are told to adjust your resistance or go faster, you can make it as hard or as fast as you want. The biggest mistake people make when trying it for the first time is going too hard, they get tired really fast and get discouraged, so pace yourself, it is not a race against the person next to you. Seat on the back at the beggining, the "regulars" tend to seat on the front.

I personally find that peddaling nonstop on a stationary bike and pretending you are on a race or hills can be kind of boring. My experience is that the instructor and the music makes all the difference, so instead of trying the classes by the name (endurance and such) try different instructors, the one that keeps you motivated without making you feel like a fool because you are just starting is the right one, he/she should show you how to adjust your bike and explain the terminology to you before class starts.

No classes at the gym this week (spring break) so I have to go home and do my own stuff, eatign right and I already drank my 65oz, trying a recipe tonight, I'll see about tomorrow

Amity, I did C25K last summer and liked it, but I gave up on it. I still ran, but I quit paying attention to intervals and whatnot. I just don't have the patience for all that counting while I'm running! LoL!

Cyster, I hate having to back off on my workouts! My legs feel dead, my breath is shallow and short, and I get light-headed. Ugh! I mean, when I actually have the motivation to ge to the gym, I'd like to get in a kick-me-in-the-butt workout. Ugh. Well...I'm off now for one of my sissy workouts. LoL!

I am a spinning instructor and it really frustrates me that people are intimidated by spinning classes because almost anyone can do it. It's just a bike and I think if more people would try it they would love it!!! :D . Like the other posters have said you do it at your own level in the beginning and you just want to work out to your own max. Yes a heart rate monitor would be great to have. Our bikes come with the display units that will tell you your rpms and miles and if you wear your heart rate monitor that goes right under your chest it will display your hr and your calories burned. My DH has one.

Everyone has to start out somewhere on that bike. I have all kinds of people take my classes and I tell them that it's their own ride and to pedal at your own level. But..... if you have been there for awhile I do expect the vets to push themselves harder.

ANother thing is that you have to give it a couple of weeks till you get hooked. My first few times sucked because I didn't think I can do it but then I just had fun with it and now I'm addicted.

Wow! Busy, busy, busy here isn't it? I have to say I LOVE that you guys are so talkative. Sorry I didn't get here earlier - it has been a busy day for me. So, it's on!!! Challenge hoooooo!!!! We have a GREAT team and we are going to KICK BUTT!!! I hope that everyone had a fantastic first day. :D

My first day was okay but I wasn't perfect with my food. I am working on it and tomorrow is another day. :D I am going to try a new quiche recipe so I have something a bit more filling for breakfast and quick too! I decided to do a few days of Phase 1 to kick some cravings and bad food habits I have had lately. Today was supposed to be day one, to coincide with the challenge but I am going to make tomorrow day one now.

Oh yeah, and I had to move my scheduled walk to my day off. It is VERY cold and VERY windy here and we have wind chill warnings. I didn't want to get frostbite or get sick.

Cyster: I love the idea of giving up dark chocolate for the challenge. I know you can do it and think of how worth it it will be! I agree to that it is easier to push yourself when you have a set time versus forever.

Yes, don't be too hard on yourself for Feb. We all have our ups and downs. The scale can be a real bugger sometimes. The good thing is that your jeans fit better!!

Yay for sore thighs. :D

WTG on having such a great workout today and really pushing yourself and being extreme!
~~~~~
otter: Yes! A jump on summer is a GREAT reason to do this, as is for a cruise. You are gonna be the hottest girl on the boat. :D WTG on sticking with the Feb challenge and having a good month. That is really awesome!
I agree wholeheartedly that this is a win-win no matter which team wins. There are so many great benefits to all the wonderful things this challenge is having us do for our bodies.
I hope you had a great class today!
Don't know what to suggest to help you with the water. Other than to try and get it in throughout the day as opposed to drinking a huge amount all at once. Perhaps your body will adjust as it gets used to the water too. I know I have to pee less once I have been doing it for a bit.
~~~~~

Lupe: Hope you had a successful food shopping trip today. I had to stock up on some things myself. As for recipes, find ones that you can make when you have a spare moment that will provide you will multiple meals. For example, the quiche I am making tonight will get me breakfast for a few days. Gotta love that!!

I have heard really good things about the 30 minute SB cookbook. Maybe you can see if you can find it on Amazon used - they have great prices on books.

Careful with those brownie bites. The sweet treat limit on SB is only 100 calories. They still have flour in them too which is no good for ya. They would be fine on occasion but certainly not very often. :)
~~~~~
Amity: Yay for getting ready for the challenge. Being prepared is a GREAT way to start!! Cutting out dessert is a good idea. It can be easy to fall into the sweets trap and while we may enjoy them, we don't always need them. How awesome that you are shooting for a 5k! I love it. :D
WTG on doing the first day of week 5 of the C25K program. I have heard great things about it. I would love to try it someday but was worried about running at my weight. If you don't mind me asking, how to you find it to be? I was worried it would be too stressful on my knees and ankles right now.
~~~~~

kariatari: Yes, let's kick our own butt's and the other teams too! :D I am glad you are so excited and can't wait to hear all about your suit shopping!

Yup, you need to post every thing that you eat, ever day in your journal.

Good idea on taking it easy during Phase 1. The bike ride in July sounds great! How much fun. :D
~~~~~
TitsMcGee: Yay for getting back into it!!
~~~~~

meemoo: Hehe - way to go on getting rid of those cookies. ;)
~~~~~
Aingeal: Yay for resisting the evil cookies.
~~~~~

rsjmommy: WTG on losing 12 pounds during the Feb Challenge! That is so AWESOME!! I can't wait to see how many inches you lose during this one. :D

YAY for a good day one and a great workout.
~~~~~
LuluBella: How cool that your daughter said that! I love your list idea - sounds like a great way to help you keep on track. I love that quote too. Nice!
~~~~~

toese: I hope you enjoyed body pump and spinning. What an extreme start to an extreme challenge!

Hi Kirian
let me know how that quiche recipe goes, I love quiches, and anything that saves time.
I agree with the brownie bites, they are just a treat, but at least they are better than any other GS cookie, and I guess it depends in which phase you are, I had them all before beggining anyway.

I am still hungry now, I think I need to eat a litlle bit more, I really don't like feeling hungry, I thought I ate enough, my belly is telling me otherwise.
2 workouts out, I had a good start.

Tits McGee

I love quiche, too!

I worked 12 hours today, but I am glad to report I ate on plan and even managed a 15 minute walk on my lunch break! It feels good to be on track again. I am looking forward to my work out tomorrow at the gym. The elliptical is calling to me!!!

Tue Mar 06, 2007 4:17 am

Kirian

Well, the quiche is cooling. I will let you guys know what I think tomorrow. It is one of the few egg type things I really enjoy. The one or two recipes I have tried though tend to be on the spongy side. Either that or I am not doing something right. Here's hoping this one is better! It smells really good.

Lupe: Cool. Just wanted to make sure with the brownie bites. You are right, they are a better option that the other GS offerings.

Yes...eat!! You shouldn't be hungry. Have some protein and/or veggies. Woohoo for a good start! :D
~~~~~
Tits McGee: How awesome that you ate well and got in a walk on your lunch break! Yay for a good day one!! :D
Cyster
Good morning everyone!!
I had a great first day yesterday! But it was indeed extreme! I am very glad there is a time limit on it. Otherwise, I would give up! LOL! But I can do ANYTHING for 6 weeks, right?!
I increased my speed on the stairs this morning. I wasn't able to lift what I expected to the weight machines for the legs, but I think that is because they were fatigued from the stairs, more than usual. I was powerful on the arms today! :D
Toese, I wish you were my spin instructor! :wink: I think you'd be great! My instructor was just silly and she annoyed me. There was too much flirting with the men, too much crass talk, and too much focus on me. :oops: I turn beat red when I exercise and she would make a big deal of coming over to me and telling me to slow down even when I didn't need to. It was embarrassing. I was just extremely uncomfortable with the conversation most days and with the emphasis on me. But, like I said, I'm stronger now than I was then...so maybe.
McGee, 12 hours? Yuck. But I have to do that two days next week. Parent/teacher conferences are next week. I always hate that week! LOL! I'll get through it though. Thankfully my workout is in the morning and won't get messed up.
Kirian, I bet your day yesterday was better than usual. :wink: In other words, it may not have been perfect, but I bet your body is still thankful for it. That's what counts. And today is indeed a new day! I think a quiche is a great idea because, like you said, it is filling AND it can be made ahead. Try to pre-plan your meals and pack them, even when you are at home. The night before make sure your meals for the next day are ready to go so that there is not thinking involved.
Otter, you said you were tired. :lol: Me too!!! I have also included in this challenge that my head is to hit the pillow at 9:00 PM because I'm up at 4:50 PM! I got to bed on time last night, but was still exhausted when I woke up!
That brings me to another thought. Make sure you are all getting enough sleep!!! If you are pushing yourself in an extreme fashion, as you all should be :wink:, then make sure you are getting enough sleep. Diet, exercise and sleep all work together hand in hand.
Good morning Team Kirian!!
As I thought--I am SORE today--my arms got a good work out!!
Here is a great feeling--yesterday in my circuit class I noticed I am starting to see a little bit of "cut" in my arms and legs. :P
I have been doing this class for a couple of months (November) and my body is starting to show some results.
My Tommy Jeans -size 8 are starting to get loose on my behind. I am encouraged, but am also aware of vanity sizing. At present I can slip into some size 8s and barely be able to button some size 12's depending on the manufacturer. I have a pair of size 6 jeans I will probably have to get closer to 140 to get myself into--I LOVE those jeans.
I guess that is my motivation today--losing pounds and inches will allow me to triple my wardrobe as I have everything from a size 6 to a 14 in my closet!
Another "treat" for myself is a haircut and color next week--this is my "extreme makeover" :lol: I think DH will be shocked when he comes home from Iraq!!
Have a great day and keep up the good work--Look for my recipe posting on tilapia!
Take care
Woke up and jumped on the bike, so my cardio for today is done
I ended up eating a slice of ww bread w/slice of jalsberg lite cheese yesterday at the end of the day because I was really hungry.
The recipe was a success, it was really delicious
Have a full day ahead, glad I took care of the workout already
I got new workout clothing as a motivation, I live in gym clothes so they better be cute!!!
Your instructor sounds like a show off but she does shound like she's is trying to help you. If she tells you to slow down and you feel good about what you are doing just tell her that you feel strong and good right now.
Good for you!!!
Good Morning Gang,
Finishing up some chores this morning(laundry,vacuuming) and then will get my butt moving on that cardio. I am ready for another great day.
Kirian-I actually started walking when I first went on SB. I walked every day and then felt like I wasn't pushing enough so I started running. Well I guess it could be called jogging. After finding this forum I heard about C25K and thought that sounds do-able. I also found those podcasts that follow along with the program so I wasn't constantly looking at the timer. As far as my weight is concerned I guess I never worried about my joints. If anything I always thought it would make them stronger. When I walk briskly I actually get shin splints and find jogging to be kind of relieving. If that makes sense? Right now I am working on endurance and once I have that down than go for speed. Just my thoughts.
Will post my recipe Thursday most definitely.
Cyster - What grade/content do you teach? I just completed my student teaching last semester and I'm taking grad credits/tutoring/subbing/looking for a secondary language arts job in the fall. :) After doing my student teaching, I know it's going to be rough trying to work in a workout program into my schedule, but I'm determined to do it!
Kari, I am a speech therapist. :wink: I'm at school at 7:30 AM. :? It's better than when I had a HS position! I was at school at 6:30 AM! I like 7:30 because I do have time to hit the gym in the morning, at a semi-reasonable hour.
Good luck to you!
