| I am on meds for high blood pressure. One of the things that attracted me to this diet was the heart healthy componant. The only thing is since I've been on it my BP has gone up. Not the bottom number (I get the names confused) but the top one. On meds I'm at about 120/80. I've been in P1 for 10 days now and everyday I've been 140ish/80. Any thoughts? The only thing I can think of is that ever since I was diagnosed with HBP 4 years ago I've eaten a banana everyday due it supposed natural blood pressure lowering, and I have not eaten any in P1. I have a hard time believing that would be it, but I don't know what is going on. Not eating more salt, not more stressed. Does that sound familiar to anyone? I will call the doc if it continues, but I wanted to post here too. |

All I can tell you is my own experience which is this:
Diet alone did not do anything for my blood pressure, which was consistantly 140/90 there for a while. Not critical...the doctor always took it, looked me up down, wanted to say something...but never did. It bothered me though.
I started SBD and along with cutting out the carbs in phase 1, I decided to go ahead and cut out salt too. You said you've done that already, right?
My next step was the exercise. I have steadily increased the exercise, getting more and more intense. Steadily my heart rate started to fall on the machines. When I added interval training to the mix (and for me it has been high intensity intveral training, specifically HIIT), I noticed my blood pressure start to decrease.
Today, I had a reading of 114/75. :D I'm pretty proud of that!
So why is your BP rising in phase 1? It could be reacting to the high protein in your diet and the lack of good, heart healthy carbs like oatmeal and other whole grains. You are not feeling stress, but perhaps your body is. Do you feel ok to continue phase 1? If so, you may start to see a slow decline in your BP once you start phase 2. If you do not feel safe, then perhaps start to add a little oatmeal to your diet or that banana you mentioned. |

| SBD isn't causing your raise in B/P, and by itself won't eliminate HTN either, I suspect..for most of us anyway. The combination of lowering salt intake, eating healthy, avoiding prepared foods and exercise can and does help a lot in time. The stress of changing your habits might account for the slight increase, but that will dissipate as this becomes your accustomed WOE. |
