Great info in this thread.
I agree the book needs work. The indexing is not too good either.

I found a recipe online for ketchup made with the sugar substitute and my husband, who eats ketchup with almost everything, loves it! Also, Walmart here in a suburb of Charlotte has the Laughing Cow Light, but not every time I go. Too many buyers on the diet, I guess. Yes, the book doesn't list enough foods / condiments that can be used in Phase one.

I found the "Good Fats Good Carbs" book to be a lot more useful than the SBD Book. I wish I had only bought the "Good Fats Good Carbs" book, and saved my money! Oh well, I bought both. Anyhow, it was cheap compared to some of my nutrition textbooks! :D

i definately agree with you all.
I found so many contradictions.
for ex: it says on p2, try not to eat fruit until after lunch, but then the meal plans have fruit in the morning!

i am so confused. i just hope i am doing this properly.

I noticed some inconsistancies as well. I have 2 gripes about the book.

First, he really didn't address the needs of vegetarians. It would have been great if he included meals using tofu like Dr. Sears did in his book The Soy Zone.

Second, there was no shopping list! I printed one out from a website for free. Since the cover price of his book was $25 you think he could have included a tear out shopping list! You have to join & be a member online for $5 a week to see one!

I agree with you all! The book definately needs work. I love this diet, being a long time overweight person, who's tried many diets, this is the best. :D I have lost over 25 lbs in 2 months. Never hungry. I have never cheated and can actually see myself thin. I bought Dr Phil's book. ( I got it from the library first.) He deals with the mental part of dieting. I still am an avid S.Beacher,But Dr Phil deals with a lot of other things the SB book left out. I aslo bought a different low carb cook book, and subscribe to a low carb magazine and get the SB daily dish, I love this web site, hopefully Dr A will write a better book or maybe a updated pamplet. Good luck to you all.

This thread is perfect for me. Thanks everyone. Does anyone have the link to the 'daily dish newsletter' ? I want to sign up for it. Great information here. I can definately relate to everything you all are saying. Best of luck to us all.

Cheryl,
To get the daily dish, you go to the official web site (Southbeachdiet.com),fill out the diet profile, when you get to the end, you need to scroll down and click the "receive daily dish button", you do NOT have to pay.

That's why I don't plan to buy the book. I've gotten all my needed info from websites and forums...and common sense, which I think is key. If you know the idea and basics behind it all you can figure most things out by reading labels and such.

I'm on day 13 and looking better (or am I imagining?) I tend to stay off scales since I don't think they tell you too much about the amount of fat you are losing. Some may find them helpful to keep track of what's going on...I prefer the mirror on my wall. It's not at all like the one in "Snow White"and always tells me the painful truth!!
As for the book, I have been using it as a guide rather than a bible. I agree that it could use a little improving, especially the index which isn't as comprehensive as I would like.

I was just re-reading the SBD book again last night and got very frustrated when looking for specific information. I was also confused about when to eat fruit on phase 2, morning or night? Both? This made me anxious to start P2 since I was leaving the familiar territory of P1. He says in the book that red wine is OK in moderation because of the heart health benefits and says that some other liquor is good because of what they are made of as well, but does not go on to explain. Says whiskey is good, but on a list on this website, I found that either red wine or clear liquor is good in moderation. Whiskey is not clear!? :?
We are told to avoid sugars added in foods but the All-Bran cereal's second ingredient is sugar and he recommends this cereal. It also has added brown sugar and corn syrup. I defniitely don't want to ruin all the good work I've done on P1. The good carb book is coming in the mail soon (bought used off of Amazon, great deal) so I hope this book can help clear things up.
I've also given up using the GI guide in the book. Seems contradictory.

You are so right--I bought the cookbook first and found his explanations in the beginning very clear and understandable. Went out to get the diet book and found it very confusing and disorganized. Glad I started the diet before I bought the book or I probably wouldn't have...

I just read the articles that mnokat posted. They are very informative. But I am totally confused about dairy. It says avoid ALL dairy during phase one but just a paragraph before that, it says that lowfat or nonfat dairys are okay. I am on day 8 and trying to figure out why I haven't lost a single pound (I have 80+ to lose). So I wonder if it's the dairy that is holding me back. I have a half a cup of cottage cheese a day plus one or two slices of 1% fat cheese and a sprinkle of shredded mozerella on my salad. Is that too much? I bought some nonfat plain yogurt last night and was shocked to see the amount of carbs and sugars listed on it. I haven't bought the book because I can't justify 18 bucks for a book to sit on my shelf next to the atkins, fit for life, carb addicts, etc. I wanted to try the diet first. Also, people are saying the book is contradicting (I did look through it and some parts are). I do have the list of acceptable foods and understand the basic concept of the diet. But I must be doing something wrong. Can anyone give me insight on what to cut down on?
