Lupe

Hi
I'll see if I can borrow a camera
I can probably do some weights as well
the thing is I don't want to get injured, I do Pilates in the reformer with a huge amount of resistance (I use all the springs), I can't even do a squat after I am done, it is strength training, actually putting Pilates as equal to streching is not right, look at Madonna all she does is Yoga and Pilates.

If anyone is taking Pilates at a good studio using a machine it doesn't even come close to streching, and for Yoga, it depends which kind of Yoga you do. You get my point.

I may be able to do 2 strength and 2 Pilates sessions, plus cardio, If that's OK I sign up, I can't do more than that, but I am actually transition into an all Pilates for strength kind of thing, since it gives you a different kind of body which I prefer since I feel kind of bulky right now (Ballerina, Madonna again, my fitness idol)

IIs that OK? the I'm in

To answer some questions...

Lupe - I understand that you're working towards your Pilates certification and that's awesome! So are you able to do any strength training? The purpose of this challenge is to have a balanced workout between cardio, strength training and stretching. So, you can do cardio and Pilates... but are you able to do some simple weight lifting as well? The thing is, if I tell you that you can only do Pilates and cardio - others might think that they can only do Pilates and Cardio as well - and that's kind of veering from the purpose of the challenge.

And, you don't have to post your weight - that's the beauty of this challenge. :D It's not about losing weight. It's about losing inches, losing fat and gaining muscle. :) That will benefit you considering you're wanting to look "longer and leaner" with Pilates. ;)

Do you have a friend's camera you could borrow?

Cyster - A cardio session is anything you want it to be - that is considered an actual exercise and is challenging to you. If you can do 10 min. on the stairs, then that's the level you're at. Some days, I don't feel good, and 30 min. is all I can do, so that's what I do. Other days, it's 1 1/2 hours. It's all a matter of what you're able to do at that time. However cardio does NOT mean: House cleaning, gardening, grocery shopping, etc. Just like strength training does not mean "heavy lifting" (*cough* of groceries) and things like that. This is a challenge - so whatever exercise-wise is challenging to you - do that. :) Sound good?

mnmenglish - I would like you to do this challenge too! However, are you able to commit to 9 exercise sessions/week? You don't know how you'll feel tomorrow or 2 weeks or 6 weeks from now, ya know? And the purpose of this IS to lose inches... to lose body fat and gain some muscle! :) I just don't think that's your goal right now. You're not really looking to "up your anty", right? You're looking to stay healthy and exercise and have a great pregnancy! :D Which, we all want for you! Would you like to be the leader of the cheer squad?!? You could totally do the challenge along with us, post in all chat threads, read journals and have people read yours and do everything except the measuring part ;) and the points aspect. That way, we can help "keep you in line" on your level and you can cheer us all on. What do you think about that?

So as our first thing to chat about - how about we start with a question ~ Why did you join an extreme challenge and what is your one goal that you want to achieve after 6 weeks?

My goal is to lose body fat and gain muscle/lost inches in it's place. :) It's not required in this challenge, but I will be getting my body fat percent measured at the beginning and the end of this challenge. My goal is to see ANY kind of loss! :D

Who's next!?

I have never tried it before, but I believe the reformer would give you an intense workout. The point was just to have some type of balance between exercise - A cardio/strength/and stretching aspect. A lot of people on this board are just into one form or type of exercise. Some still are either all strength and no cardio or vise versa. And the point of seperating strength training from Yoga/Pilates is because some people take mild yoga and consider that strength training - which, I believe is an aspect of strengthening and lengthening - but not really building muscle. Although, I could be wrong... I just never knew Yoga and Pilates to be a "muscle building" exercise.

Sounds good to me! :)

It's taken some thinking to think up a good goal for this challenge because a) this challenge is already about exercise, so I didn't want to say anything about that, and b) I don't want to lose any weight right now. So what I've come up with is to not get into the mentality of eating for two, but to eat 3 healthy meals and snacks. According to sparkpeople.com, before getting pregnant I was supposed to eat right around 1500 calories. So I figure an additional 300-400 would put me around 1800-1900 per day (Wow that seems like a lot!). I have starting tracking my food to see how much more I actually have to eat. With my other 3 pregnancies I think I got into a free-for-all mode. And while I am not going to deny myself certain things, I am going to make sure I don't go overboard.

So even though food doesn't really count for this challenge, it will be my main focus (along with that little thing we call exercise). :D

Great! I would love to see everyones progress and definately your progress because I too think Madonna has a GREAT body and wonder how it is that she gets there claiming to only do yoga. I wish I could get the advice her trainers give her!

Quote: I can probably do some weights as well, the thing is I don't want to get injured
Just curious - how do you feel you would hurt yourself with adding additional weight training to your existing program as you train to become a pilates instructor?

Quote: I can't even do a squat after I am done, it is strength training, actually putting Pilates as equal to streching is not right, look at Madonna all she does is Yoga and Pilates.
I agree that pilates is not the exact same as stretching - but it is different than strength training IMO. I am not great at yoga or pilates, But I do know I am definately sore when I am done with my yoga workout! - I know it works! but it is a different kind of sore than actual weight training. lifting with dead weight (beyond resistance bands and body weight) doesn't compare to anything else I have ever tried - and I have tried a lot! I don't think pilates and yoga actualy tears the muscle fibers the same way weight training does. when reading the challenge description that it is either "stretching, pilates or yoga" I interpreted it as someone at a beginner stage might do a stretching day and someone more advanced might do a more dificult yoga or pilates routine. or if we really beat up our bodies one week going really extreme and pushing ourselves - we might take advantage of the opportunity to do a "stretching" day.

Quote: If anyone is taking Pilates at a good studio using a machine it doesn't even come close to streching, and for Yoga, it depends which kind of Yoga you do. You get my point.
Please help me understand your point - I would love to get it and maybe need to look into what the "machine" does in pilates. i don't even think where I live we have a "pilates studio" so I get the point that pilates and yoga and stretching are all different - is that the main premise? sorry for not understanding.

As a fellow commpetitor in this competition, I would motion for the powers that be (Pookie and Kirian) to only allow people that can meet the stated guidelines to be a part of the competition. I appreciate your interest in not only pursuing pilates certification but aiming for a madonna like bod - she is hot, isn't she?

I also want to set clarification out there to the other readers that strength training does NOT give a "bulky" body. Lower repetitions with higher weight does build more size than high reps with low weight, but women do not get bulky from strength training. finding a program that works for us individually is great and sticking with it to see how OUR bodies respond is necessary to make judgement of any type of program.

~ Why did you join an extreme challenge and what is your one goal that you want to achieve after 6 weeks? I joined the extreme challenge because I think this is what has been missing from my workout regiment - REAL competition. I do all the other challenges and I do okay, but I want MORE. Even the word "EXTREME" makes me feel like I am competing for something bigger, better and harder than anything that this site has offered me before! I want to know that the best of the best are working together and against eachother all wanting to be WINNERS! I am naturally competitive in spirit and am looking forward to being in a competition where everyone is able to workout intensely and understand the same feelings of busting out a HARD workout and not being able to move afterwards. Okay - I'm a little hyped up here, but I am just excited!! :D

mnmenglish - congrats on the pregnancy!! I will come check on you too ;)

Lynt - good luck finding/borrowing a camera! I know that if you buy a disposable one you can get them developed onto a CD - so then you can load it onto the computer! just a tip for you or anyone else that might not have access to a digital camera.

Cyster - isn't the stair machine hard!! I used to do the stair stepper thing and was able to build up to 15 mins or so - but I made sure that I warmed up on the treadmil or elliptical - then I counted that time as cardio too ;)

Alrighty everyone! good Luck!! :D

I am very interested in the extreme challenge...but...
I a not a Yoga Pilates type person--is this 1 session waiverable for something else? Swimming ?
I work out 6 days a week and my cardio is done in conjuction with with strength training--would 1 class count for 1 cardio and 1 strenth training?
This class kicks my butt..
I journal every day but recipes may be a problem
I drink 1/2 my weight in water right now
I have a digital camera

I am just not a pilates person--
Can I still join?

You can use that session as a day for major stretching. :)

What kind of class is it?

Don't you try to make something new sometimes? It's only once a week - and it's for bonus points.

Quote: I drink 1/2 my weight in water right now

Good! That one won't be a problem then. ;)

need it gone

I have a couple of questions about this one. I am loving the current challange and was looking forward to March.

So for cardio and strength can I count my TaeBo Boot Camp as both. They are cardio and use weighted resistance bands. I would think the resistance bands would count as strength training. Or am I wrong. Plus can I count my Crunch Pilates tape as Cardio and Pilates, otherwise I have a basic Pilates tape that I can do for the stretching I guess.

Just let me know and I will decide if I want to play too. :)

I do ALL this stuff anyway...except the posting of food (been there, hate that) and the pictures...(what if someone from high school sees me??!)

Notice my age
