hi everyone! i know this has been discussed over and over, but i just got results back from 1/19/07:

total cholesterol: 234
trig: 86
hdl: 50
ld: 167!

i have never had this tested before, and being only 22, it kinda scares me. my doctor wrote a note that suggested changing what i eat and testing again in 3 months. but when i had this test i had been on sbd for 2 months, and i was thinking my numbers would have gotten better already (but maybe not?)

i eat red meat about 1x a week, and also shrimp 1x a week. hmmm maybe no more shrimp.

i also do 40 min of cardio 6x a week.

but my real question is... my mom and grandpa both have high cholesterol and are on medication. could my genetic predisposition be enough to keep my numbers that high, even with my diet and exercise?

i called my dr and left a message to talk about this, but wanted to know any others opinions...

Genetics definitely play a huge role!!!

Statins make my cholesterol rise---I finally told the docs "enough". The doc I have now says I should have chosen different ancestors. :?

exactly! thanks for the input!

it sucks but it kind of makes me feel better knowing that something i'm doing isnt causing the problem!

i have an appt. with my dr. to discuss my results on monday, so we will see what she has to say about it.

anyone have any ideas as to whether i would have seen a change in my cholesterol at 2 months? i did a search and alot of people said that they saw changes after even a month....

with my weight still going down, i wonder if it will get lower as i go...

Your LDL is high, but not astronomically so. I bet that your LDL and triglycerides have both come down since starting SB. Your HDL is nice.

Poor shrimp got a bad name-- they actually contain other sterols (not cholesterol), so they're just a red herring if you cut those out becuse of bloodwork. Poor things! And dietary cholesterol doesn't have nearly the impact on serum cholesterol as they originally thought. It has more to do with eliminating trans fats and minimizing saturated fats, plus eating a wide enough variety of good plant foods.

How often do you eat oatmeal? Maybe try having that more often, and make sure you don't eat tons of cheese. Make sure that you do get good fats like in nuts, canola mayo, olives, etc.

I bet that your LDL will continue to come down. 2 months isn't a whole lot of time (and you don't know what it started at, which could have been a major change already), so another 3 could be really good.

kim, thanks for your input!

yeah thats the thing, im pretty sure that things have come down since starting, i just wish i had numbers from before, so i could really know!

i actually eat 1 oz. of cheese probably every other day, so that should be easy to keep in check. oatmeal, however, is not something i eat often, but i love it. i just need to take the time on weekends to make enough for the week. im thinking that will help.

thanks for the encouragement, i am really hoping that things will keep improving!

Yes, obviously genetics are a factor, but I agree that you probably already saw some decreased numbers in that two months. My DH was close to 300 total cholesterol when we started and only saw a minor change after 8 weeks.....but when we tested again after 4-5 months (just when the annual physical happened to be scheduled) he was down to about 215....so a big change! ( and his trigs and hdl were SO good that the ratio put him into the no risk zone)

I also agree to wholeheartedly concentrate on getting some 'heart healthy' stuff in every day....the olive oil, the almonds, salmon, oatmeal, even a little bit of red wine  , etc., etc., and keep at it. We did cut further back on the lean red meat, too. Like you, DH has a strong genetic history of high cholesterol, but he refused to be put on meds for another 40 or so years without at least giving proper diet and exercise a fighting chance.

You can do this!!! 8)

4Texsons, thank you for your encouragement!

I started my day off with steel cut oats, and made 4 days worth last night so i have no excuse not to have them for breakfast. im just glad i like oatmeal!

its great to hear about your husband, that really gives me hope that things will keep improving!

 They will! They will! (We are an impatient bunch, aren't we?)

Check out the big breakfast cookie recipe in the recipe forum.....easy and very yummy way to get the oatmeal in when you're on the go! Keep us posted on your progress!

you know, i made it once and thought it was terrible! it tasted like nothing at all. but with how much everyone says they like it, maybe i should try again. and with starting a new job this coming week, a quick breakfast would be very helpful...

oh, when you make it, the oatmeal you put in is supposed to be coked or just plain old oats? that was a confusion last time i made them...

thanks for the tip!

Just the oats out of the round "box"....one time I made it with applesauce (and added cinnamon, vanilla) and whatever else is in the recipe, another time I made it with bananas instead of applesauce and added some of the ff/sf choc pudding mix (bear in mind I'm in P3...can't remember if you can have that yet!) to make a chocolate version of the recipe....and they were very moist and tasty!

Oh, and in the first one I did add a few raisins....really did seem like a cookie to me.

Good luck!

Just thought of something....have you tried to gross out smoothie?? Great great way to get a quick breakfast in with the added bonus of a good portion of spinach, too! (You can add ground flax seed to it too for an added heart health boost!)

oh i love the gross out smoothie! i have heard of adding flaxseed to it, but never have. now i have a good reason too, though!

i think i will have to try to make the breakfast cookie again, it just sounds so good in theory. thanks for the suggestions!

i went to my dr yesterday and she didnt have much to say, in terms of what i should do. she doesnt want me to be put on medication since im young and want to have children. however, i told her about what i eat daily and all she suggested was more fish. i will also be keeping a closer eye on my saturated fat and total percent of calories from fat through fitday. so ok, i can do that!

however, also in my labs she noticed slightly increased liver functioning, which could have been from me being sick during the test (i dont remember if i was or not...) or possibly from something called fatty liver, which is somewhat common in overweight people, and apparently will get better as i lose more weight and control my cholesterol.

so here goes nothing! i will restest in two months and hope for the best.

LEM1955

I just had my yearly physical and got a new cholesterol report 3 years into the SBD WOE. High cholesterol 263 was my original reason for selecting the SBD. I'm up 5 pounds since my last physical, and trying to cut down on portion size. (I haven't changed what I eat, but I know I've been eating more than I need.) Cholesterol was pretty good though --

Total 199
HDL 86
LDL 105
T 42

My latest regular breakfast is an eggbeater omlette with smoked salmon pieces, tomato juice, one slice ww toast with Smart Balance spread. Yummy. And it's getting me a small (almost) daily portion of oily fish.
