| I know this is not SB related..but i know there are a TON of women on here that might be able to answer a question for me. My dr put me on Ortho-Lo today. I have been taking regular Ortho for years. She said that it is just as effective with less estrogen. I figure I'll give it a shot..but has anyone else swtiched from regular Ortho to the Lo kind? I am curious about things such as weight loss, mood swings, breast size decrease, pregnancy risk...all stuff that can be related to a change in the body's estrogen. Thanks in advance for an advice/opinions. I don't start the new pill for 2 more weeks... |

Hey disco..
You shouldn't get any additional side effects. In turn, you should probably not experience as many with the LO formation. All those side effects usually occur with the increase of the estrogen. From my experience when people have switched from the reg to lo form they stop or decrease having cramps/bloating/breast tenderness. Hope this helps!

Are we talking Ortho Tri Cyclen and Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo, or Ortho Cyclen and OTC-Lo?
I've been on OTC-Lo for the majority of 4 years now. When I started SB last year, I had breakthrough bleeding issues that month, and my gyno immediately switched me from OTC-Lo to Ortho Cyclen. Eight months of crazy hormonal psychotic hell ensued. I threw my remaining packs away and demanded to be put back on OTC-Lo, and I've been happy ever since.
I guess that doesn't really answer your question, since I had such a bad reaction to Ortho Cyclen. But, switching me from OTC-Lo to OC had a lot of horrible side effects, one of which being hormonal eating (things like fried chicken and chocolate chip cookies and bacon -- the gyno said I was eating as if I were pregnant). It had a HUGE effect on SB. I'm still not back to where I was pre-OC.
My suggestion would be to journal. It took me too long to realize that OC was a problem. When all the things that were happening to me finally came together, it was staggering. Wish I'd realized sooner what that damn pill had done to me. Writing down everything that seems a little awry might help, *IF* you do have any side effects from switching pills.
Good luck! |

I did, but I had to go back to regular Ortho. My body did not accept Ortho Lo really well, so I went back with regular one after 6 months of using LO.
After I went back on regular I tried generic brand. Never again. It’s better to pay higher price for pills then use generic brand. I had bleeding thru out of the month, bloating, headaches. I switch to Yasmin, just to try it out. Been taking in for 4 months now and I like it. No negative reaction so far. |

I was on the generic Lo too. I never quit bleeding!! But I had to be on something low b/c of nursing at the time. Longest 9 months ever! I was going to for a year but I couldn't take it anymore. Switched to Yasmin and now I'm perfect every month. No noticeable side affects. Though I'm actually 2 days early this month...wondered if it's from starting an actual HEALTHY diet??

I am a Pharmacist and just want to clear up a few things...I am assuming the original poster is talking about Ortho-Tri-Cyclen and Ortho-Tri-Cyclen Lo.
There is no generic for Ortho-Tri-Cyclen Lo...and when you are nursing you are on a low-dose progestin only pill--you can't take the combo estrogen/progestin pills because of nursing...and bleeding can be a problem with the progestin only pills.
There is no difference between brand name and generic pills--they have to have the same ingredients in the same quantities in order to be substituted. The one poster said she went from regular Ortho to the Lo and then back to the generic of the regular Ortho and had problems with that--it would have been the same if you would have gone back on the brand. She switched to Yasmin and the problems went away.
I was on TriPhasil for years...like 12 years when my doctor decided to try me on a different birth control--horrible decision...had so many problems mostly with bleeding...I was on Alesse, Mircette, Yasmin...nothing helped and going back on TriPhasil did not either. I was to the point if I took my pill even an hour late, I would bleed. I now use the Nuvaring and have no issues at all...and I love thinking about my birth control twice a month.
Back to the original post...they have found that you can go to the lower strengths and still get the same benefits without side effects...you should notice nothing different but if you do, don't hesitate to ask your doctor about it. |
