I've been having chronic stiff neck and knots in my shoulders, neck and back for years and no matter how many massages I get, or chiropractor visits they will always be there. SOmeone mentioned in my spinning class supplements but I didn't hear what he said.
Does anyone have any advice or tips on how to either prevent this or get rid of the knots and stiff neck? I've tried researching this problem on the internet but with no avail. |

hey toese
i'd be a little wary about a supplement, but what about muscle relaxers? do those work at all?
could it be the beginnings of arthritis?
maybe it's from spinning? how long has it been going on? have you changed a strength training routine?
oh... and hello! |

I've had this problem for a couple of years now but it seems to be more noticeable now. DH gets big knots in his back too but I don't think he has the stiff neck like I do. It may have to do with looking at the computer/ I stretch my neck like I am suppose to and it's not the spinning.
What kind of muscle relaxers are you talking about? over the counter or are the px? |

I'm a pharmacist, so i thought i'd give you some advice
Currently there are no over the counter muscle relaxers in the united states. If you have a chronic stiff neck i would recommend talking to your md about being on a muscle relaxer and/or anti-inflammatory drug to help prevent and treat.
OTC wise, you can try taking advil/motrin but at higher doses 600mg (3 tabs) every 4-6 hours. At this dosage it can have an anti-inflammatory effect. I also like icy-hot. It's a rub that can help loosen the muscles.
as for supplements available, the only thing i can think of thay may help is glucosamin/chondroitin. This is a combo pill used to help joints and mostly used in arthritic patients
I suffer from neck spasms and soreness due to my job (being on the phone a lot) i find working out makes it worse but it's a price i don't mind paying. I'm currently on advil and zanaflex which is a prescription muscle relaxer. That usually does the job and i only take it when it flares up.
Massages are always nice too, my neck feels way better the days after. |
