My doctor said the South Beach diet was fine!

HI,

I left the SB diet book at my doctor's office over the weekend. He looked at it and said it was fine for me to go on the plan without an office visit. Just thought you were all curious as to what the outcome would be. So I guess we have a diet that is actually Dr. approved here!! Isn't that wonderful?!

Thanks so much for all your wonderful advise and help. I will be preparing to start the diet in the next couple of weeks. My question to anyone. How do I go about starting with Phase II? Should I follow the book or go online. I pretty much need some very specific directions.

well did you expect he wouldn't?

sadly most doctors know very little about nutrition.

I think more often it is that they know little about specific diets "du jour".....

Though more and more people are posting that their docs are "turning them on" to South Beach.......

(even though it seems to have lost some popularity what with all the "newer" diets with the same premise..... and prettier books! :D )

I have read many articles that say that most doctors don't agree with Low-Carb dieting. I expected him to say no, since I didn't do good on the Atkins diet and have some health issues...

Low-Carb dieting is probably not a good idea for most people (Atkins and the like), but SB is not low-carb dieting. It's healthy eating with a focus on complex carbs, lean protein, healthy unsaturated fats and vegetables.

Who can argue with that!

Its more of a good carb vs bad carb issue I think. Here is some info on that actually: http://tinyurl.com/36odq8

good news. thanks for letting us know! Some people do seem bound and determined to implement it as a "low carb" program, but it really isn't designed that way and certainly doesn't have to be implemented as such. There is enough "room" in the food lists and portion guidelines to get a more than adequate source of nutritionally sound carbohydrate intake. It doesn't allow for a large excess of carbohydrates devoid of much nutritional content or those that increase blood sugars dramatically, which are the typical "carbs" most people consume so it may appear "low carb" from that standpoint.

My doc recommended South Beach. He said people are experiencing great success and it was a healthy eating plan. He was right.

My doctor told me the same thing. I asked him for a diet plan and he suggested SBD.

Here's a really straightforward explanation of the difference between good (complex) carbs and bad (simple) carbs - in one page. Any doctor who says simple carbs SHOULD be kept in a diet for health reasons is a crackpot.

I saw a weight loss specialist last week and he was happy that I'm following SBD because, as he said, "it's not really a diet."

he also threw in a bunch of words like "respectable", "healthy", "educated" - I guess he's a fan!

Anecdotal: I had a really horrible doctor a few years ago on my first SBD attempt. He told me I need to lose weight, I told him I was following SBD. He scoffed and said stuff about it being a fad diet, etc.

The next time I saw him (a mere three months later), he asked what diet I was following. While I was still on SBD, I left off the name and told him "lean proteins, whole grains, no added sugar, tons of veggies" and he was very pleased. Go figure.

Jahmmy, that's so funny! It certainly takes less explaining when you say it that way...to anyone! And you get less eye rolling.

I have a woman doctor (who is very tall and thin) and she has been very nice about not pushing me about my weight - but when I told her I was planning to do SB she was very positive.

I saw my dr. on Friday (3/23/2007) and he got on to me about my weight. When I told him I was thinking about South Beach, he said it would be an excellent choice, so there's another dr. giving an 'ok' to the way of eating! YAY!
