SBD for seizures

Mom2Ellie

My daughter Ellie is 7 and has 5-10 seizures every day because of a rare syndrome. She has generalized (grand mal) seizures twice a week. We have tried the Atkins Diet and over 10 different seizure medications to control her seizures, all to no avail. The Atkins Diet made her very lethargic. I have recently learned that the SBD has been a more successful treatment for seizures in some patients and I would like to try this. Our neurologist knows nothing about it, which they call the LGIT at Mass General. I've read the book and I'm going to give it try. Is there anyone else out there that has tried this diet for seizure control? I would love some tips on how NOT to lose weight.

Ellie is only 39 pounds and cannot afford to lose an ounce. The food restriction will not be an issue because she has multiple disabilities and does not get her own food. She pretty much eats whatever I give her.
Thanks,
Barbara

Kids should not be in P1 anyway, so make sure you follow a P2 type of meal plan which is basically healthy eating anyway, and up the dairy if possible if that is something she can have. Focus on lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, and healthy oils. Make sure she eats enough quantities and calories to sustain her weight. Natural peanut butter is good for this with kids I would think! Hope it will help!

I think the diet your thinking of is not South Beach; rather, ketosis. It does help some people with seizures. Generally, most people with epilepsy have a good reaction to ketosis and it helps control seizures in some cases. I have also heard of ketosis triggering seizures in people who didn't have epilepsy to begin with.

Ketosis should be done under the close supervision of a doctor, because you need to measure portions to the ounce. The epileptologists at MGH are great and should be able to provide more info. Best of luck!

My cousin's child has a rare seizure disorder (caused by Vitamin B6 deficiency) and the diet you are talking about is a ketogenic diet (not the SB diet).

This is Lydia's website.
