Closer by the Mile...The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge

As some of you may remember, I rode in the 2006 Pan-Massachusetts Challenge (http://www.pmc.org/) last year. The event raised $26 MILLION dollars for The Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, with 99 cents of every dollar raised going directly to support cancer research. The PMC is the oldest cycling fundraiser in the country and raises more money than any other athletic fundraising event in the U.S. It is also considered the leanest fundraising operation in the United States.

The PMC has contributed more than $171 million to lifesaving cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute since 1980.

Yesterday morning I committed to ride in the 2007 Pan-Massachusetts Challenge. On August 4 and 5, I will join 4,300 cyclists who will be traveling eight different routes, logging between 70 and 192 miles over one or two days, through 46 Massachusetts towns. The PMC route I have chosen to ride again is from Sturbridge to Provincetown -- 192 miles.

I have learned that it’s best not to procrastinate or beat around the bush! I am posting to ask you for money. I realize that I could lead up to it gently but this money is needed for cancer care and research and there is nothing gentle about cancer. I hope that you will help. My friends and family are committed to taking this challenge seriously and I trust that you want to be a part of the cure as much as we do. Last year this forum was extremely supportive and generous and helped my team raise over $100,000 to support PMC.

I will do the training and the hard work. I will even post sweaty pictures if that helps! All I need from you is a check. Consider donating the cost of a nice dinner out. If you can dedicate twenty-five or fifty dollars to helping find a cure, you will be in good company. Any donation will be appreciated.

My goal for the 2007 PMC is to raise $6,300 or more for the Jimmy Fund.

I am far more nervous about meeting this goal than I am about the ride.

The PMC is a way for the healthy to fight for the ill, and for all of us to invest in the future cure.

Please help me support this worthwhile cause!

Added a new team member today so we're up to 11. A good start. I thought his story was worth sharing:

I have cancer, and for the record, it sucks, I plan on fighting and I am going to "win". It’s not easy to talk about and even harder to write about having cancer. Cancer is something other people get. I ride bikes (PBP 2003 & Mt. Washington Hillclimb) and do triathlons, I raise money for cancer... I shouldn't have cancer, but I do.

One of the reasons that talking about it is so difficult is that it makes things so much more official and concrete and I would prefer if "my cancer" wasn't either of those things. But it is, so I have no choice and must talk about it!! Talking about it is also how I am going to get you to help, get you to support us in the fight against a cancer. Mine is stage IV stomach cancer that had spread to my liver.

For the past nine years I have ridden in the Pan-Mass Challenge, a two-day, 192-mile cycling event that raises money in support of the Jimmy Fund and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The Pan-Mass Challenge has grown tremendously over time, and raised over $25 million last year, bringing their all time total to more than $170 million. Now that I am a cancer patient, the 2007 Pan-Mass Challenge will be more meaningful than ever for me. In the past, I always rode to help raise money for cancer research, but I never imagined I would ride as a possible beneficiary of that research. It is going to be harder because of my illness and my treatment, but I am going to do it. I am asking you to get involved.

I truly believe somewhere along the road between Sturbridge and Provincetown lies a cure for cancer, maybe even for me. You can help us find it. Thanks for joining the battle. Don't miss great opportunity to make a difference.

Gratefully,
Paul

You can send me a check, or go through the online giving process at the link above...the money all ends up at the same place -- Dana Faber for cancer research!

I've been too quiet -- I know -- there's been a lot of effort getting the team organized and getting a "pedal partner" assigned to us. Fundraising starts in earnest now! 8)
