good job M_G - look at the progress you are making!

Can-ex I think that is why i like this program so well - it can be modified to make it work for whatever level we are at.

I pushed through and ran Su, mo, tu, we, th. I have been babying myself thinking I needed longer recovery because last time I tried to run every day I HURT. This time it is different but I think it is because I have better strength overall from biking and swimming.
My knees used to hurt and now they don't! go figure.

I took today totally off because A. i think it is a good thing and B. I wanted to go out and have some fun after work.

Program this week:
warm up 5min fast walk
run 25 min
walk 20 min

I am getting 4 miles done in 50 min so that is about a 12.5 min mile w/ the walking and running.
I have no idea how fast i am running.
I plan on finishing out the week at 25 min then upping it to 28 min.
I plan on keeping the distance the same because that is my house to the park, 2x's around the park and back home - exactly 4 miles. (I clocked it on my bike)the overall plan is to just up the run time and down the walk time but keep the distance the same with a 5 min warm up and cool down.

I have been trying to run at different times of the day. Wed I did it in the morning - Nice :) yesterday i did it at 5P - warm and humid :( tough to breathe. AND I did it after doing my run, muscle pump class and a 30 mile bike ride on Wed. Amazing what we can do when we push ourselves through it.!

Hi everyone. I love reading this forum because you all inspire me so much!

I just wanted to add in my two cents about week 5 and 6. I completely agree--I thought they were huge leaps and I wasn't sure I could do the 20 and 25 min jogs. But I did because I listened to my body and didn't overpace myself. I just completed week 7 yesterday :!: which means I just completed four sessions in a row of 25 min jogs. By the time I did the fourth one yesterday it felt easier than the first time I tried it a week ago. My legs weren't as tired and wobbly when I stopped and I seemed to recover my heart rate a lot quicker.

I'm looking forward to easing into a regular 30 minute routine and eventually working on pace.

Okay guys, I totally suck! I spent a couple hours at work catching up on all the posts in this thread that I'd missed (8 pages worth!), and had actually TAKEN NOTES on all the stuff I wanted to comment on (yes, I'm a dork!)... and then I lost the notes-list, and never got around to posting, and now I've gotten all behind again. I don't know what it is about me, I think I just need to relax and tell myself it's okay if I'm not 100% caught up, just post anyway! As if I don't already have enough stress in my life. Jeez.

So anyway! What's finally getting me to post is that I just got back from running my third 5K race, and it was AWESOME!! My time was 38:40 - I shaved nearly two minutes off my race time from three weeks ago!!!!! (3 weeks ago my race time was 40:30, and 5 weeks ago my race time was 41:09 - I'm chugging along!)

This was all particularly exciting because I was really stressed about this race. It's the first one I've done that's JUST a Run (as opposed to a Run/Walk)... it's been nice knowing that at least the walkers will (mostly!) finish after me!

To make matters worse, I'd checked out the results from this race last year a couple weeks ago and learned that it's a VERY small race (under 100 runners)... and the people in last place were finishing with times in the 36:00s. With a personal best of over 40 minutes at the time I looked that up... it was discouraging to say the least!

So I've been getting myself psyched up for the very real possibility of finishing last. Even though I knew I'd be excited to beat my own personal time, I also knew that I'd be emotionally stressful to actually be LAST - especially if last was several minutes behind everyone else. I'm actually really glad I looked up the last year's results so I had this bit of warning time to get myself mentally prepared for this, because realizing ON RACE DAY that I was in last place would have been crushing.

So for the past 3 weeks I developed a 5-day-per-week training program, STUCK TO IT!, and I think it really did help. I did two days of "normal" runs (2-3 miles), one "long run" on the weekend (two weekends ago I did 3.5miles and last weekend I did 4miles - both my longest runs ever!), one "hilly" run on the roads near my house, and one "speed" run (where I'd alternate bursts of running with recovery walking). I got ideas from training advice on coolrunning.com, and just kinda put it all together in a way that seemed to make sense.

So anyway - WOW! The race felt REALLY great! I paced myself well, and I felt pretty good through the whole thing! I'd remembered a hat, as well as sunscreen (yay!), and I didn't end up feeling overheated even though it got pretty sunny out near the end.

According to the results they posted at the race, there were two people that finished behind me... it was a woman and her husband, who I'd heard during parts of the race. She was really struggling him, but trying to convince him to go on ahead, because she wanted to do this on her own. I could totally sympathize with her... at the same time I bet there was part of her who was excited he stuck with her to the end.

There was also a very young girl (maybe 7yrs old?) who kept pace with me for a long time, but it didn't look like she ended up finishing, strangely. She would run for a while, and get a ways up in front of me, and then get tired and walk. So I'd pass her. And then a bit later I'd hear her coming up behind me, and she'd get ahead of me. She was really struggling near the end though, I felt kinda bad that whoever was running with her originally had kinda ditched her. Right near the end, what appeared to be her parents met up with her (she was right behind me), and maybe she stopped then... she was so close! She was probably really frustrated though, it's too bad.

There's a bit more I want to write, but I REALLY have to leave now (time to tutor!)... I'll be back on later today :)

DC - Congrats on another race well run! You are awesome.

BHG - Wow, that's under 11 minutes per mile; fantastic!

I am sitting here trying to work up the motivation to go down and to my C25K workout...processing...processing...

Wow, BHG, 5 miles! And you're getting pretty speedy, I am jealous of that :) Sounds like you're doing great!

I got my C25K workout in. I did Week 2, Day 1. I warmed up for 30 minutes first, had absolutely no pain in feet, ankles, calves, knees, thighs or butt. I am such a turtle. So not a hare. I experimented around a little bit with running at speeds greater than 5.0...all the way up to 6.0 and was surprised to find that my legs will move that fast. Heart and lungs were definitely complaining, though.

I followed it up with a nice upper body Bowflex workout. I love it when I can spend a couple of hours in the "gym." I also got in quite a bit of yard work today, so all in all, a very active day. :D

maltby - I am not all caught up with this "second run through" you're doing with the earlier Cto5K weeks, but it sounds like you're doing great, challenging yourself with some faster speeds and things. It's good that you're playing around though and not trying to make yourself push too long at the higher speeds... but your body is getting better at handling it, it sounds like! Keep it up!

You are up late, missy! Basically what happened was that I got so discourage on Week 4...it was really hard and didn't seem to be getting any easier. And since I have never really liked to exercise, I've tried to keep it all about not being too hard. Since I was only "running" (using the term loosely!) at 4.0 mph, I couldn't really slow down to be able to work through it. So I said forget this and went back to Week 1, but did it faster...faster jogging and faster recovery. I repeated Week 1 three more times :D and am on to Week 2 again. Anyway, you can see how much faster my mile time is getting. I'm getting excited to run a continuous mile again. I will probably do it after my first week on Week 3 and try it at 4.5 mph or so.

That does sound like a great idea, maltby :) I do remember reading back when you were first thinking of "going back" to Week 1, and I was a little worried... I guess concerned that you might be thinking you couldn't do it, when you really could.

But now that I've read a bit out what restarting ACTUALLY did for you... gave you the chance to push yourself harder and see how much you've improved without having to burn yourself out, it sounds like a FANTASTIC idea! And I know there's no chance you'd actually "give up" on Cto5K... I can tell you are in it for good, no matter how long it takes. It's really quite exciting :)

Also, about being up late - I had to work (tutoring) for a couple hours after my race this morning, and then when I got home around 3pm I was just so exhausted. In addition to the actual racing, I think a lot of the exhaustion was from being out in the sun for a while. So around 4 I lay down to take a nap... and woke up at 10pm. lol

So now it's a bit after 1am and I'm awake... might try to go to bed at some point though even if I just sleep for a couple hours, just so my sleep schedule isn't COMPLETELY out of whack!

Also, before I forget any longer, I want to comment on two big-deal events that I read about when I was catching up...

cyclechic - WOW! Somehow you managed to train for AND complete and entire Triathalon while I've been away!!! That's completely wonderful! I really hope it went well, I have read the parts about your training but I haven't caught up with posts after the event actually happened. So I have to do that, absolutely. But I don't want to keep putting off my general congrats, because it's just so exciting :)

Backhoegirl - Your first 5K race was so wonderful to read about! Man, your husband sounds like a huge support, what a great guy to help you fulfill your race dreams!! I am so impressed. Very exciting! And your comment about finishing both first and last really hit home with me - we all really have come so far, but there also certainly is room for more improvement! So anyway, I'm so glad you were able to make that "race" happen, it's fantastic. :) Also, when I read about that other race that was happening nearby but you weren't going to be able to make it, and you didn't want to do it anyway if you would be alone, I almost cried - thinking, oh no, I would LOVE to be there if I could to cheer you on!!! So what's the plan for the rest of the summer? I know you're doing the 10K training now... are there going to be any races (5K or 10K!) happening anywhere nearby you might be able to participate in?

So now I have to go back and catch up on the last few pages, and then I'll finally actually be caught up :) I've been missing this thread!

Thanks for your words DC.

Im not sure what the plan is other than following my current training schedule...moving around so much and never knowing where well be more than a few days in advance, signing up for a race is really hard, also most are in the lower mainland which we just arent that close to. Hopefully next year Ill be realllly ready and willing to drive some distance to be in a race by myself but just not yet.

Probably the 10k training will end in another "race" with myself, and of course my husband cheering me on. Maybe Ill wear a parper #2 this time :)

I always try to tell myself when I feel I am just tooo slow that I am only racing myself. Finishing is what matters!!

Just finished my run of 20min at 4.5mph. I haven't done that in most likely 20 years. Thanks to all the great motivators and if you will excuse me I will go pass out now. Getting exited thinking about week 6.

Cheers
