Cyster

I RAN THIS MORNING!!! LOL! I did! I did! (And now DH is reading over my shoulder and I am embarrassed. ) LOL!

I have some strange hang up about running. I've been so afraid that I couldn't do it! I thought I was going to break the treadmill, which is irrational, I know. Or I thought I'd get the speed going and my legs wouldn't figure out how to go from walking to running. I've NEVER run on a treadmill before. So what I did was hop to the sides while I sped the thing up and then supported my weight while my legs started to move with the treadmill. It worked! No problem! And I am giddy!

I completed week one workout one! It felt so good to actually run! I have run since high school and then only because I HAD to! I'm proud of me!

Now, one question...is there any reason why we can not do this program 5 days/wk? I know you're supposed to let your body rest, yadda, yadda, yadda, but I do cardio work every day. Running is just cardio work, right?

Running is cardio...... but is also a "weight bearing or load bearing" activity.
Running, walking, aerobics, hiking and other activities that require your muscles and bones to work against gravity are considered weight bearing. Swimming, biking, the elliptical (to name a few) are not. Your weight is being "held up" by either water.. or a machine.
Weight bearing activities can be pretty tough on the joints, bones and muscles if you don't start out slowly.
Aerobically you may have the capacity... but physically it will be different..... You're risk of injury (especially if you are a new runner and/or are heavy) are quite high.

The Couch to 5k is designed for people interested in beginning running without risking injury.

Also...make sure you are running in a good running shoe.

And congrats on starting!

Hello all!

CC- In my humble opinion I think it is just fine you are doing week 2 again. Another suggestion is to slow down the pace for the 3 min where you are comfortable completing it. Just think there is no way the average person can sprint for 3 minutes repeatedly and that is what you are trying to do by going faster than you can sustain. Pacing, Pacing, Pacing.

Yeah Cyster ! ! ! ! ! You are a runner!

Luvs 2 run gave you some great advice re running on consecutive days. Just to add to it - it doesn't mean you can't do something else on the off days such as upper body weights, the elliptical, ride a bike, swim etc.

Running is not my strong point and I found I can't run on consecutive days no matter what condition I am in. I need the recovery time. It was interesting when I went to the sports medicine dr. last week about my knee (nothing serious) She said she can't run everyday either but is like me and loves the variety of x-training. (elliptical, bike and swim - all the non-weight bearing) If I mix it up I can do something at least 5 days per week for at least an hour per day.

I did manage to get a 3 mile run and 2 mile walk in on the 26th before leaving town. the past 2 days have been a wash - the streets were too icey at my folk's to even attempt going for a run - I value unbroken bones. Hopefully I can fit something in tomorrow but right now I have a pretty full schedule and am donating blood so will have to take it a little easy.

Keep up the GREAT work ladies you are AWESOME! ! !

Actually, not just cardio (meaning working out your heart).

As luvs said, there's a lot more too it.

In learning how to running, you need to build up:
- your lungs
- your heart
- your gut/diaphram
- your quads
- your shins
- your soles

Each of them can be a "weakest link" at any point in time as you build yourself up.

At one point it will be one thing. Then you'll have a breakthrough in that and it will be something else in your body limiting you.

In many regards the eliptical is just cardio - it's hard to injury yourself.

Running takes additional paying attention to the body, prevention of injury, and patience in progress.

Best of luck.

Thanks for all the info. I truly am a novice runner. I didn't run today, but I did HIIT on the elliptical followed by a moderate walk. My shins are improving! I've been walking mostly to build up my shins and I think it's working. My shins didn't bother me at all while running yesterday.

Cyclechic, running is definitely not my strong suit either! LOL! Then again, when I first started doing the elliptical I thought it was evil too and now it's become almost too easy. I can still find ways to challenge myself, but the sheer effort of getting on it is no longer an issue! It is amazing how quickly the body adapts!

Keep going! We're all going to be runners yet!

Oh Cyster - I remember the evil elliptical days. 15 minutes on the lowest level and I was whipped! The body is an amazing machine if we allow it to be.

I am going to the bike shop to pick up my bike today. I had a rear cadence monitor put on and it's annual tuneup ( I figured I should beat the spring rush and now it is ready to go on any given nice day) I am pumped to get it back on the trainer and ride again.

have a great one!

Well my running has gone by the wayside temporarily. How is everyone else doing?

The REASON it went by the wayside is because we got 6 glorious inches of beautiful, fluffy, pristine SNOW.

Today it was 17F, no wind and lightly snowing. Just too great a day to pass up. I called a friend, we loaded up our x-country skis and hit the trails for an hour and 45 minutes. Ours were the only tracks there, the trees were covered w/ snow and it was dead silent - It doesn't get any better than that.

Hopefully Monday we can dust off our downhill skis and drive to a little local resort and work on our form before we hit the mountains in Feb and March

Winter does have its advantages!

But I still haven't got my bike hauled in and set back up on the trainer so I can play w/ my new cadence monitor :(

Keep moving everyone!

cyclechic..... run in the snow!! It is a wonderful feeling!
You can get grips for your shoes (if you are interested :D ) http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?storeId=8000&catalogId=40000008000&productId=47775974&parent_category_rn=40003537&vcat=REI_SEARCH
in case it is icy underneath.

One of my "inside" torture devices is an older racing bike set up on a cycleOps trainer.... Have you tried any of the "Spinervals" video's?
http://www.spinervals.com/

They're a pretty decent workout!

(oh btw... cross country skiing.... fantastic workout!)

Hi ladies!

I did the Couch to 5K Week 2 workout again today and am planning to do so again on Wednesday, but I'm planning on moving to Week 3 this weekend. Yikes! I hope I can do it! I know you guys have recommended that I try slowing down my pace, but I really feel like I'm going pretty slowly. I'm just not very athletic! :) But I'm working on it! Today it seemed to go easier because I had done pilates beforehand. I felt really good afterward! :)

How is everyone doing?

Spoken like a true runner  I don't know if I will ever get to that point :)

Snow = skiing or snowshoeing :)

We didn't get to go skiing today :( DBF's mom invited us out to the farm for dinner so that pretty much took the day.

I am starting some part time jobs again this week and that really cuts into my exercise time. I must get the mind set that 20 or 30 minutes is just fine - it doesn't have to be an hour to be worthwhile.

Luvs_2_run. I have a cycleops also. I know people that have the spinervals and really like them. Right now I am just using the Chris Carmichael time trial DVD that came w/ my trainer. It is an awesome workout and really has helped my cadence. I am anxious for spinning class to start again.

Well happy New year all and remeber "together we can DO it ! ! !

I got to run again today. And today I managed to speed up the treadmill while still staying on it. LOL! Baby steps! Baby steps! I'm worried about increasing the running time. I feel like I can't do it. But then again, I felt like I couldn't run, period, and I can! I have such a mental hang up with running! Now why is that?!

It is a wonderful feeling. I've had some of my best runs on snow. However, there is some snow I love to run on and some snow I refuse to run on - mostly for safety's sake. I don't know what snow is like in other places, but I feel in Colorado you gotta know the snow - how deep, how wet, how much it has melted and refrozen, current ground temperature, etc. to judge what to run on and where to run.

And always if you questioning your foot fall for an upcoming an icy spot, WALK THROUGH IT!!!

I've learned the hard way too many times.
