Here is the new thread that is moving over from the P-2 discussion board

For newcomers if you want to join in we are discussing building our running ability pretty much from the ground up. In other words we are non- runners who are starting to run for a variety of reasons. We have received great responses and help from experienced runners.

First off I'll introduce myself - I am 50 years old with the goal of doing a sprint Triathlon next summer, I am already an experienced cyclist and swimmer but a total non-runner - my goal is to do 5 miles at a 10 min mile by summer. since starting at the end of Oct. and running on a treadmill (no incline yet) or an indoor track, I currently am at 5 miles at an 11.5 min mile or 3 miles at a 10.25 min mile. I did my first 5k run outside last week and survived Whoo Hoo! I had a good base layer of fitness from riding my bike all summer before I started trying to run.

Here I am! I found it! ;)

I'm Cort, I'm 26, and I just recently began trying to get into running, thanks to guidance from Luvs_toRun and Cyclechic! I'm currently on the Couch to 5K program, which can be found here. I finished the third of three Week 1 workouts yesterday and plan to move on to the first of three Week 2 workouts tomorrow!

A few weeks ago, I could barely do a 15 minute mile. But I've been combining brisk walking with jogging and over a few weeks, I was able to whittle that down to a 12:50 mile. Now, however, I'm focusing on endurance...

Can fat people run? :( I ask because I'm amazed at what I can do on the elliptical. I "run" for an hour at a pretty fast pace with no problem. My heart rate keeps getting better and better. I'm actually pretty fit despite the weight I'm carrying around. I do 1/2 hour of cardio 3 days a week and 1 hour of cardio 3 days per week. I've been itching to run lately, though I've never run in my life! I decided to race my son to the car the other day, not a long distance, and I was out of breath by the time I got there. :? So sad!! What do you think? Drop a few more pounds before trying?

I'm fat and I'm learning to jog! ;) I'm not to "running" yet, but I know if I keep it up, I'll get there eventually. If you want to try it, you should go for it! I started by mixing brisk walking and light jogging, and I'm still doing that. I can feel myself getting better each time! :)

Cyster...... I think the Couch-to-5k
http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml
would be a great way for you to start out if you are interested in running!

It really does just "ease" you into it. You just might surprise yourself! :D

Welcome!

Question? what is a row of 30? :)

Keep us updated on your progress

Cyster - I was doing the elliptical too - it is great cardio and easy on the knees. I wanted to get a full hour workout in and knew running would be too much so I would do the elliptical for the first part and then finish it off with running, as my running has increased I have eased up on the elliptical.
The couch to 5K is a great program give it a try! Good luck and Welcome on board!

Hmmmm...you guys might convince me yet. I'm not there...but I'm nearly though. I almost tried to run on the treadmill today...but I chickened out. I guess I don't want to look like a complete idiot at the gym.

On the plus side, I did the fitness test on the elliptical today and given my weight and age, I am at a "high" fitness level! Gotta love that! In fact, I did a little more research and taking my weight out of the equation I am one point away from "superior" fitness. I love it! And yet...I am afraid to run. :?

I think it's usually scary to try to do something that you've not done before. That's like me and weights... If you work your way up, you'll probably find that you love it. (You seem to have an addicting exercise personality! :D)

I'm kind of watching this thread. I'm more active now than I have been since high school. We bought a treadmill and I love it, use it 5-6 days a week. At first, I was doing long, slow distance but now I just want to push myself a bit and go faster. I feel so re energized after a workout. I'm not quite at running yet, but I will walk/speedwalk/jog for 5 km no problem. So I don't know if I'm really a Couch to 5k person, but will keep an eye on this thread if that's ok!

Come on board!

I am not doing the Couch to 5 K program either, I can already run 5k I just want to do more and speed up. this is more of a thread for beginners or walkers (non-runners) who want to up the pace to running. Couch to 5k is excellent for people just starting out.

We're using it to let others know about our progess, ask questions, keep motivated and give congratulations

It's funny - I can already do 5k but I still consider myself a non-runner because I am so slow and I really don't like it too well yet. I am hoping that changes. :)

oh.. i guess i translated that from Dutch to English a bit too litteraly... I ment there are ten weeks of 3 trainings a week, so that makes a total of 30.  I'm sorry, my English just ain't that good

I am doing the Counch to 5K from cool running and am in week 5. I started at 263 and am at 243 in 7 weeks on SBD. Didn't exercise the first 2 weeks. I have never been a runner, but feel good and this Friday I am to run 20 minutes straight.

Try it and just follow the schedule and adjust the speed of your walks and jogs to what you can handle.

I started running with about 55 pounds left to lose w/ a year and a half of exercise under my belt. I was exercising at least an hour a day for 5 days a week and the first time I tried running I hated it! I could only run for maybe a minute, yet I could last 45 minutes on the elliptical! I didn't give up though and every other day I'd head out to the lake and try to go a little bit longer/further. I actually had to form my own plan to work my way up to Couch to 5K! I went from barely a minute of running to 15 miles per week (7 miles is my longest run)! It can be done!

My advice would be:

1. Be patient!
2. Go SLOW! The fastest way to injury is doing more than your body is ready for!
3. Go to a real running store and get fitted for shoes! Are they expensive? Yes! Is it worth it? Absolutely!
4. Be consistent!
5. Remember the only way to train your body to run is to actually run! The elliptical is great, but it ain't running! :)

Oh, and for those using a treadmill remember to set the incline to 1% to mimic the feel of running outdoors.

Great points.

The only slight mod I'd suggest is on point 2, the importance of good technique.

Bad technique (it takes time to learn) can contrigute to injury quite quickly, especially when combined with doing too much too fast.
