Hey everyone...
I just got back from my annual physical and I got some diet questions...
The bottom line is that I have to get rid of or severely decrease the carbohydrates and starch in my diet. I also have to get rid of iron.
A bit of background - I'm vegetarian and am trying to lose fat. My diet right now isn't that bad, my doctor joked about it and said he'd be out of business if people followed what I eat (I kept a food log). I also go to the gym 3 or 4 times (every other day) a week, including running about 16 miles weekly.
Anyway, my doctor said I shouldn't eat sandwiches, oats or fruit anymore - it's all carbs and as long as I have a starch or carb source, I won't lose weight (genes). He was pretty behind schedule and I had to go back to work, so I couldn't get a full answer from him about what I should eat.
So, I'm lost... What's a vegetarian (no meat, fish or eggs) supposed to eat without eating carbs/starch or iron???
TIA! |

I would reschedule an appointement with your Doc! I find it kind of irresponsible of him to lay this on you and then not have the time to explain in detail what he meant or to give you food lists to be able to work from.
I don't really know how to answer your question. Veggies are basically low levels of carbohydrates, so are you supposed to cut those out too? Your body needs carbohydrates to survive and funciton properly. Surely he wasn't recommending cutting ALL carbohydrates out of your diet. This advice doesn't even make sense to me from a nutritional standpoint.
From a SB perspective we would encourage you to keep including the good carbohydrates found in whole grains, vegetables, beans/legumes and fruits and lower glycemic starches like sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes. But this seems incompatible with his general instructions, so I don't really understand how to dovetail the two. |

Thanks for the response.
Yeah, I was confused as well. But I think I'm getting there. I'm getting a better idea about what to do the more I look into it.
So far, I have:
Edamamme (w/ a little sea salt)
Almonds
Berries
Oats
Tofu with Broccoli and other veggies
No potatoes
No more regular milk - Soy milk (Silk) instead
Whey protein supplement (the lowest cal and carb brand - any recommendations)
Watermelon/cantaloupe (sparingly)
Sandwiches (sparingly)
No bananas, peaches, grapes, etc. due to 'bad carb' content
I also gotta stay away from iron as well... I think I can start to change my diet with the above list, but it's just a start..
any other recommendations? |
