I need to get my max heart rate measured professionaly because it had me in the "high zone" for my age and I was barely breaking a sweat and could carry on a conversation.
No you don't :) Unless your asthma worries you... to get your max HR, just go as hard as you possibly can :) !
For example, if you were outside, find a hill about 1/4 mile long - warm up for 15 min or so,then run up the hill as fast as you can 3 times. Recover slightly on each downhill. On the fourth time, literally go so hard that you can barely stand it. Check your HR monitor at the end for your max HR (during that workout, if you have the F6 like me, it will list your avg and max for the session) and there you have it!
You could also do this on a track using 400 m repeats, or a treadmill by getting going at a pace that is slightly easy (for me, I run normally at 6.7 mph on the 'mill, so I'd set it at 6 mph) and keep increasing the incline every 2 minutes until you can't anymore.
Max HR is kind of like your height, sure a stadiometer is useful for finding out how tall you are, but you can also do it by drawing a mark on the wall and using a tape measure :) |

thanks for the info and how to do it!
I am going to a sports med Dr on thursday for something else and I am going to throw my numbers out to her and see what she recommends.
I wore it to spinning class yesterday - my HR was up to 173, I was breathing heavily but not out of control and could still speak in short sentences just not carry on a full conversation. My HR would drop to about 130 w/in 45 secs of doing active recovery
I think I would be nervous checking out my max HR myself because I am 1 week short of 50 and asthmatic. even if I had someone there with me I am not sure they would know what to do if I ended up collapsing
It is wierd- prior to being 50 heart attacks etc. never even crossed my mind - I am now at the age they are a reality and people my age are dying from them :( How perceptions change as we get older |

Happy almost new year to you too!....have not been on the forum lately with all the holiday stuff going on. Still getting to run and spin quite a bit, but not as much swimming. Next week will be back to schedule. I have the 1/2 marathon next Sat. Looking forward to it and spending time with my DH and friends. We spend the night and have a party after and going to a comedy club for starters....we all have stories to tell about our race that day and it's lots of fun. It has become an annual tradition. Also keeps us from getting out of shape through the holidays.
Cyclechic....I think you are doing one??? I forgot when? |

Good luck on the 1/2 marathon runsuzie. It does sound like you will have a great time. There is nothing better then spending an evening w/ like minded people.
Do you have a personal goal for the run?
I am just planning on doing the swim portion of the local "blizzard biathlon" If the run had been 5K I would have tried it all but the run is 5 miles, there is no way I am ready for that especially because it is outside in Feb and the temps can be as low as -20F (colder if the windchill factors in) but on the flip side it can be as warm as 30F. one just never knows around here.
The swim is only 500 yards so I know I can handle that. I teamed up w/ a friend who is going to run it - brave soul.
I haven't been doing too much because of the holidays and travel but I did get out on Sat for an almost 2 hour cross country ski session, it was divine!
Well it is back to work and normalacy tomorrow - hopefully I can get back on track.
Happy New Year ALL! ! ! |

Hey cyclechic....are you back at it again?
There were LOTS of people at my gym this morning!!!! It usually goes back to normal by March...even though it's more crowded, I like seeing all the new faces. I am going to get back into a simi tri schedule to get ready for one in early March I am planning. I am worried about the swim...the water is usually still really nippy that time of the year. If I can talk one of my tri friends into it, I will go for it. Have not been on my road bike in three weeks! Do you have anything new coming up??? |

Our Gym gets busy now too and then settles down by March
I ended up not getting back until Sunday  I did P-1 for 4 days to drop the Christmas weight and get rid of all the evil sugar in my body. I have found I have no energy on P-1 no matter how much yogurt or beans I eat. I had a couple of bananas on Sat and that made all the difference.
I did a 40 min high intensity spinning class then went up and ran a mile (inside brick) on Sunday
yesterday I walked .5 ran 3.5 then walked 1 for a total of 5 miles in 1 hour. I did squeak out a 10 min mile then the rest were about 11. I dragged butt on the last walking mile
I am planning on slowing down the and staying steady.
I am going back to my old 2nd job tomorrow so I hope I have the ambition to keep exercising. It is only an additional 16 -20 hours per week so I should be able to work something in - I just have to get into the mindset that 20 mins is OK and better than nothing
Nothing in the works except the blizzard Bi - it is way too cold here to plan for anything (wind chill temps forecasted for -30 on Th. )
Swimming outside in March - where do you live? we still have 12 inches of ice then
Keep

Hi Cyclechic....I just read another post about your fibromyalga (sp) wow!
You are amazing! Having that condition and all that you do. You are my inspiration! I have a friend with it and she can't do anything. I am glad to hear that eating well relieves some of the problems. I hope you continue to feel better with the sbd!
How is your training going? I just started Running camp again for the winter season. We did a two mile time trial and he takes that time and bases all our workouts and goals with that time...at the end of camp we will do another time trial to see how far we made it. My goal is to get my 5k time down a little more.
Happy running, swimming, biking! |

Your running camp sounds really interesting (I don't think I could use the word "fun") It will be fun to see what training you do and what improvements you make.
Well there hasn't been much swim run or bike in my life lately :( Working the extra job is taking more out of me than anticipated - I think it is because we just ended a semester at school (my real job - teacher) and had tests to correct, grades due, new classes to get ready for and 2 days of horrendous inservice. On top of that i put in 27 hours at my other jobs
I have to keep telling myself "this too shall pass". after next week more time should open up. I really miss my exercise time but right now I have some bills that are more important.
Sorry about your friend. I hear of so many with FMS that struggle and don't get any physical activity in. I have a friend w/ it and arthritis and I told her how much better I feel after cutting out caffiene, white flour and (most) sugar. She agrees she should but she isn't willing to do it. I guess the pleasure of food and caffiene outweighs the pain of FMS and arthritis
:(
I was lucky that the meds my dr put me on years ago really helped me. There are a lot that they don't help.
the biggest thing w/ the fms is not overdoing and long recovery periods.
Speaking of overdoing I had just better get doing! I am going to go on the treadmill here at home for at least a few minutes and try to get in the habit of at least short workouts[[/code] |

I read somewhere that exercise is one of the most effective treatments for fibromyalgia. Do you find it helps you? I can imagine it would make it that much harder to get motivated, though. I don't have fibromyalgia, but I do find that sometimes if I'm not feeling well before a run, pushing myself to do it often makes me feel better.
I keep an eye on this thread. A triathalon is a long-range goal for me. After tenure. 8) Good luck with your training, cyclechic! |

Hi Doc....I'm glad you are keeping the Tri on the back burner. Once you get into it, you will love it!
cyclechic....sorry you are working so much! I am working less because business is down so much. I have more time, but no$$$$$$
I did such a dumb thing today...I just posted it on the yoga thread, but I ran 7 1/2 miles right before my very first Bikram yoga class not knowing how incredibly hot it is in there. I barely made it through. I can't believe I am so clueless!!!!!
I can't wait to go for a nice cool swim tomorrow!!!! |

Holy cow 7.5 miles - I can't even imagine ! Doesn't yoga feel great.
Doc - Glad to hear a tri is in your plan book - do you want to do a sprint level, olympic, 1/2 IM or full IM ? ? ? Sprint is my only goal for the time being because I am such a poor runner.
exercise does help FMS I have found, especially strength training. Now that my muscles aret stronger I have very little pain. My biggest pain problem is if I don't get enough sleep - 8 hours is the minimum for me and every once in a while I need 9 or 10. Since starting SB however I sleep better and feel much more rested through out the day even on 7 - 7.5 hours
I have come to the realization that if I can just maintain my current fitness level w/ all the work time scheduled i will be happy.
Yesterday i did 50 solid minutes of spin class then went up and ran THREE miles on the track. I average 10 -10.5 min miles so felt pretty good about that. I did a quick arm workout and called it good.
Runsuzie did you have an event coming up or just finished one? |

Hi Cyclechic,
Sounds like you are great at time management. Working so much, trying to get your 8 hours of sleep and getting in some amazing workouts!!!
Right now I am competing in two local running series' . I have a 5k next week and a 10k the following week. After that, I have to run in 4 more races to complete both of the series. one will end April, the other May.
I am also planning to do a triathlon in March and am toying with the idea of the Olympic distance. (they are offering both sprint and Olympic) I have only done the one Sprint tri back in October. I think I am ready for the longer distance, but I think and was told, my bike would keep me from being competitive with the "big Girls" I am just not ready to spend any money to upgrade to a better bike. Sometimes I wish I didn't have this competitive side to me that wants to win!!! I say "I just do it for the fun and enjoyment and health aspects" and then my "alter ego" comes out!!??
Did you say you had a date set for your Tri? |

Thanks for the time management compliment - unfortunately it is far from the truth :( I have horrible time managment skills and I am a horrible multi-tasker.
Luckily I live alone because dishes, laundry and house cleaning are what suffer.
I haven't been getting as much sleep as I need either because when I get home from job #2 it is about 10:30 which is when I should be in bed (job #1 starts at 7:30 A) instead I read the paper, do a cross word puzzle (heaven forbid I should throw some laundry in at this time
Routine MUST change I have 3 more months of this :(
Good luck on your runs - let me know how you do
An olympic tri is a noble goal. I could bike and swim it but the run would kill me.
What kind of bike are you riding? is it a road bike or a hybrid?
I have a road bike but it is designed for touring not racing so I will never be highly competitive either. I just can't justify spending another $2000 on a bike that wouldn't be ridden that often. I always say I am not competitive but I think that is a lie
good luck again! knock em dead! |

cyclechic,
Just wondering how training is going? I have a triathlon March 17. I had planned to do the olympic, but injured my back (being dumb) and decided to do the sprint. I think I will be fine except it will be pretty chilly in the lake we have to swim. I inherited a wetsuit, but I don't think it's worth the effort getting the thing off in transition for just a sprint.
I ran a 10k this morning. We had to run over a bridge and then back over it again to get back. It was windy, rainy and cold...but I was very happy with my time. I stayed with two girls that usually beat me in the 5k and we had a nice little race at the end 8) I took it easy all week because of my back. maybe my body just needed to rest a little.
I am having a hard time figuring out how to train for the triathlons and still train for all my race series races. I know I am sacrificing somewhere!
Hope you are finding more time and doing well with your health. let me know what you have been working on :D |
