I am Candy. I am planning to start this diet this weekend. I find the book is not specificate enough. It list soup is okay to eat. Does that mean canned soup, which I enjoy frequently.

For my own limited experience, I think the best thing to do is just understand the basics of his approach and be fairly familiar with the "Foods to Enjoy" and the "Foods to Avoid" lists. Then as you shop or make decsions about certain items, you can bounce it against your own knowledge and make as good an informed decision as you can for those things that seem to be in a grey area.

So here's a thought process I tend to go through:

NE Clam Chowder - Clams good, pototaoes and flour to thicken bad.
NY Clam Chowder - Probably OK except for potatoes and other bad veggies like carrots or corn
Chicken Noodle soup - Chicken good, broth good, noodles bad
Minestrone - Tomato soup base OK, most vegetables and beans OK, any pasta or "bad" veggies bad.

Here's an example from P1. The wife and I went up skiing at the end of the first week. We walked into the cafeteria to survey our choices. They had large chef salads, but neither one of us felt like a salad. We looked at the chili and debated the likelihood of added sugars in a tomato based chili and decided against it. We settled on a hearty Beef Vegetable soup. As we ate it, we picked out the potatoes, carrots and corn and everything else seemed within the guidelines. I think we even added some shredded cheddar they had out for the chili, even though it wasn't likely low-fat.

And I thought he had something in the book about soup more or less equaling broth. If you really like soups, unfortunately the best thing you can probably do is make your own stock and add those things that you like that are on the Enjoy list to it, and make enough to eat for the week, and/or freeze some for later as well. Then you get to control exactly what goes into it and you can reduce the sodium content which is often sky-high in most prepared soups. I don't know what the book says about sodium, but I personally prefer less to more.

I don't have any canned tomato soup in the house, but you should check the label to see what's in it - if it includes sugar it's probably a no-no in phase 1... I've ignored it because I prefer it made with whole milk and even better with a pat of butter melting in the middle of the bowl, and then a bunch of crackers crumbled into it....and a big glass of cold milk....and a toasted cheese sandwich.....oh, my :oops: . See why I don't have a can of tomato soup in my pantry?

I'm thinking that the "brothy" canned soups would be a better bet; although they are usually pretty high in sodium.

I think a lot of what this diet is about is trying to get you to eat more in the way of "whole foods" instead of food that is ready to eat. Not counting all the "sugar words", it seems like the more ingredients you can't pronounce the more likely it is you shouldn't eat it.
I've had to get used to taking a little more time fixing meals; used to use a lot of the stuff that came in boxes or cans.

You are most likely right. I have learned a lot by reading this forum. I have decided to wait a couple of more days before I begin this diet. It sounds really hard. Thanks for replying.
