I just want to get on my soap box for a moment and talk about yoga. I know your all thinking oh no that stuff is not for me.... well it's for everyone and i don't care what fitness level your at will transform your life... yes I said life not just your body but your life. It helps with your reflection on day to day activities and stress. You'll feel energized and after your "relaxation" time you'll get up and literally think you can conquer the world. Okay I know in the back of your mind your saying I'm too heavy for that or I can't move in that way.... they make DVDs for every level. Gaiam has a great video by Susan Deason that shows 4 different modifications starting at someone that can't barely bend over and touch your knees to someone that can put their hands flat on the floor. Please just try it and you'll never quit. I have been doing Yoga for 2 months now and I know people think I'm crazy but I love it! And you will too! Yoga mats are inexpensive and you can get them at Walmart and the DVDs are pretty cheap too... Amazon has great deals on them or Walmart has some. Just start slow and listen to your body. Or you could go to a yoga studio for a little while until you get more comfortable with it. THat is what I did. And don't get nervous about being the newbie. The instructors are wonderful and very helpful.
Hopefully I have inspired someone to change their life with the gift of yoga. Please post if anyone else has addition praise on yoga or any questions. I would love to help!
P.S. And on a lighter note just to prove anyone can do it... I have 38G sized chest and if I can manouver around them to do it then anyone can! I do admit it does get frustrating!
Hope to hear from people soon! |

Preachin' to the choir here as well! :) (He types while eating his salad after a vigorous lunchtime vinyasa class.) Not really much to add. It's good stuff on so many different levels and is really a very complementary process to the process of transforming our lifestyle eating habits at the same time.
And while I think pretty much everyone can benefit from adopting some sort of yoga practice, I don't think it provides enough cardio. strength and goal oriented milestones for many people. It resonates for some and not for others. I'll never be a distance runner, a bicyclist, or a serious weight lifter. But each of those provide a lot of the same benefits to those who resonate on a deeper level with those activities.
Find your exercise passion and pursue it! |

I'm a yoga newbie but I love it, too! I'm still very much in the "learning" phase. It started with McDonald's DVD - I needed something for exercise that I could fit into my very tight schedule, and that was it. Now I have other DVDs and 3 books and I'm learning more every day. Maybe at some point I'll take some classes and work with an instructor so I can make sure I'm doing it right. Now instead of watching TV and eating after I put the kids down, I'm getting into a routine of doing 30 minutes or so of yoga. I love it!! It's hard to describe that "balanced" feeling you get after doing it with a little regularity, but it is unique to yoga as compared to every other exercise I've tried.
I also like to run, and I'm starting that up again (legs are sore after Day 2!), and I think running and yoga is a great combination that will help me take the next step toward becoming as healthy and fit as I can be. |

Here is an article from Yoga Journal's online site you might find interesting about combining the two: Yoga for Runners
As to whether yoga provides adequate cardiovascular fitness, recent studies (from more tradtional exercise oriented organizations) tend to think this is not the case.
ACE = American Council on Exercise
ACSM = American College of Sports Medicine
ACE Yoga Fitness Study
ACSM FAQ on Yoga
Not surprisingly YJ tends to think differently: Is Yoga Enough to Keep You Fit |

OH: also, have one that is easier, but i swear she makes you sit there and breath for freaking ever, (10-15 minutes) which is a little wierd for me. its too earthy for my taste, if that makes sense..
oh...what type of yoga would be best for me also....meant to say that before too.

The one that makes you feel good and meets your needs the best? ;) I do several different styles depending on mood and class availability. They all tend to be more vigorous styles though. I get a little bored in the more stretching and flexibility oriented styles. But I've got a weekend of that in about a month, so I'll let you know if my impression changes! ;) That first link in my previous post had a great post by santosha about what to look for as a beginner. Really I think it is often a matter of trying different classes and styles until you find one that fits you and your needs. I'm not a big exercise by video person, so don't really have any recommendations in that area.
And since I like links so much  , here is one I found and saved that gives some short descriptions of a variety of different types of yoga. Maybe reading through the list will help identify or eliminate some particular styles for you. http://www.matsmatsmats.com/yoga/yoga-disciplines.html |

| I've tried pilates at my old gym. I didn't particularly care for the instructor or the classes so not sure I got a good appreciation of a quality pilates experience. A lot of good core strengthening stuff though. I would think it would be pretty complementary to yoga at the same time. There are even some Yogalates classes out and about that combine the two. I often see them compared a lot but found the experiences to be very different for me. |

If you are a yoga beginner, I suggest you try taking a few classes - just the basic Hatha Yoga to get a good foundation. There is just nothing like having an instructor look at you to help you learn the basic poses. The class should cover breathing as well as poses. If the class doesn't talk about breathing and how to breath in the poses, then it's probably just a "stretching" class.

Oh yeah - another yogini here - Namaste! |
