| I feel more of a workout after a vinyasa class than I do after three miles running on the canal. I think it is a really high number too but as another guide it will work to give us a guestimate. I do not do yoga for the calories I burn but for how it makes my body feel and look. |

| On this we can agree oh warrior woman! And I'd add for how it helps my head and heart to feel better as well. (Yesterday we got a condensed version of the instructor's 3 hour class with her teacher over the weekend on relationships with lots of heart openers and chewy things to think about at appropriate points in the class.) Personally always a little torn on the whole "yoga for weightloss" thing myself. Did you notice in my journal on TOB that my 3 year "yogaversary" was yesterday? Had both a good forearm stand AND handstand in class during inversion playtime. Still coming off the wall, but hey, it's still progress! ;) |

| Happy Three years-I know how life changing it all is. Please know that I am greatful to you for sharing your love of heated yoga and experiences. I always dedicate my second sun B to you since you enticed me into yoga and my third sun B is dedicated to Mary-my first yogi when I came to Breathe. In a way you practice with me! I also added a second push up on the last two to get stronger. Missing it today!!! |

well, I'm starting today. I can't afford a gym but I have a few old dvds that I'm going to pop in and see what is best for me at this time. I'm not going to attempt this as part of my weight-loss, I need to get in shape. I currently have mono :? so I have to take it easy, and I also have a bad neck. I've done a little before but never stuck with it.
Considering I'm an old fat woman, terribly out of shape, about how long of a session should I attempt to start? once a day? every day? I'm also walking. |

Well I turn 52 in a few weeks and don't really consider that particularly "old" and I suspect you aren't really all that fat with less than 20 lbs to lose. But be that as it may, I guess I would simply take it slowly and see how it goes. Certainly a yoga asana practice can be engaged in virtually daily along with your walking. Something is better than nothing! :)
Given that you are also trying to overcome an addiction, you might want to explore some of the other eight limbs of yoga if you have no other spiritual traditions you are following or even if you do! Yoga is a union of mind, body and spirit and you may find it helps in many other areas of your life as well. In reality, yoga is practiced continually. Some of it takes place on our mats, but most of it takes place off of it. |

thanks so much, I found a site and read through a lot of that and will re-read today!
This might seem crazy, but one of the dvd's I have is Yoga for Dummies. She's great and I went through all the steps. I have another I'm going to check out today, but will do something. |

| People do seem to like the YfD series. Never seen it or tried it myself. If you have a reasonably stable high speed connection I also often mention an online site, www.yogatoday.com as they have an hour streaming video class every day from a variety of styles and influences and varying focus on different aspects of the practice. Every Sunday they post the upcoming lineup for the week if you want to review the descriptions and see if any "speak" to you. (look in the menu area under "getting started" on the upper right or if you try a few and want to keep informed you can have them send you an automated email) I prefer classes and studio interaction to videos, but the few I tried I thought were well done. just another option for more variety! ;) |

now ur a tease AND a lurker!! don't know that it will prove to be anything mind blowing or anything but looking forward to it. Something I've kind of wanted to explore for awhile but didn't quite know how to approach, so kind of just looking for some tips on how to get started. My best buddy out in grand junction, co meditates in the morning every day, has a little "altar" and incense and stuff. not sure I could be that disciplined, but hey, worth a shot. will report back if anything seems translatable to a message board medium.
had a fun C3 class this week too with uber bendy Lisa. (who is now preggo and going to have an actual belly!! hahahaha!!!) anyway, unusual at CPY to use straps but we cinched one above the elbows to keep elbows at shoulder width and then went through about 10 mins of flows and asanas where that same alignment was in all of them. tadasana, uttasana, utkatasana, warrior 1, bakasana, chatturanga, up dog, down dog, etc. was a pretty interesting exercise. she's always good for an a-ha moment or two. She's upped her C3 class to a 75 min class too which is good. more time for teaching and exploring. |
