I HATE hot (like in over-spiced) food. And I'm saying this with the same amount of passion as Mr. Smith in the Matrix I where he says that he "hates this place" (the creation of the world within the matrix).
It seems like if people can't make food taste good they have to cloak it in overly hot spices to make it taste like something. To me it displays a lack of talent and consideration.
I Hate curries.
I Hate chili.
If it is mildly spicy and stings my taste buds only slightly - don't ask - I Hate it.

curry is not inherently spicy. chili doesn't have to be either.
people just LIKE them spicy, so they add some heat to it.
you can, however, make either of these totally mild. and they're very flavorful in and of themselves. i don't think people use hot spices to make up for lack of taste, but because many people genuinely ENJOY that sensation that comes from eating spicy food.
to suggest that using hot spices "displays a lack of talent and consideration" shows either a lack of culinary knowledge, or just a general lack of tact when it comes to appreciating different opinions and traditions. whatever the case, i completely disagree. |

Part of the reason I love spicy foods is because my nose doesn't work very well, never has. Spicey and buttery are about the only intense flavors I can taste.
And I agree with A-Rod. Some people just LIKE it. If you make the exact same dish with or without spicey I'll usually take the spicey I do hate it when they overspice and overwhelm the other flavors, but spicey can really accent other flavors (for example I love spicey with creamy, but usually hate it with sweet). |
