Hi, I just discovered this message board today and am interested in the South Beach Diet.

My goal is to lose 60 pounds.

Is it likely that I can actually lose 60 pounds if I follow this diet to the letter?

Also, if I follow this diet to the letter, is it likely that I can lose 60 pounds in 6 months?

Thanks

Yes, of course you can lose 60 pounds with a proper diet! If you follow SBD correctly, and (my opinion) add in exercise, it will work.

But in 6 months? I think you are falling into the "impatience trap". Impatience is what kills most diets. Maybe you'll drop 10 in the first two weeks, but then settle into Phase 2 for the long haul...average 1-2 pounds per week. The last 20 will take as long to lose as the first 40. Remember, slower is better. It's more likely to stay off.

My overall goal is 60 pounds and I am estimating 12 months to do it slowly and safely, without feeling like I am deprived of things. I cheat occasionally...it helps me keep my sanity and stay on track for the long haul...
