What kind of weight am I actually losing?

I'm a 29yo female in great shape - 5'6" and a steady 135 for as long as I can remember. I work out 5 days a week and have been trying to get a more muscled, leaner look - not quite bodybuilder, but definitely "Ms. Fitness America." I decided to try the South Beach Diet to see if it would work for someone like me - already in good shape & don't really need to lose any weight.

I'm now on day 4 of Phase I and to my great surprise I've dropped 3 lbs. (I haven't been even a half pound below 135 since....?)

My question: Is this just a loss of water weight, or am I actually losing fat?

My gym friends insist it's water weight; how else could I lose 3 lbs. in 3 days? But I'm not so sure, since I've been keeping well hydrated (thank the pwers that be for caffeine-free diet coke & crystal lite) and have been eating normally (per the guidelines).

Any experts out there with an opinion? Thanks...

im actually very curious about the same thing. I am only 19 years old but i work out every day, play sports and i am 5'5 133lbs and have a lot of muscle. I am trying to lose about 10 lbs bc no matter what i do the little little pouch on the lower stomach needs to flatten out completely.
Anyway i have heard that on atkins the majority of the weight lost is water weight, but i think that you are losing more fat on this diet bc u are aloud some carbs like beans and most veggies. As long as u stay hydrated and stay away from large amounts of caffiene u think that it wont be all water weight ya know... But im 19 and thats just what i personally think.
