Hello everyone,

I have been on Atkins for a couple of months and have lost 29 pounds (20 on Atkins). I still have 30 to go.

I am considering moving over to the South Beach.

Any of you done this? Why is South Beach better? What are the main differences?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Sitch over to SB for a week and see if you like it. You'll lose the same amount of weight. They both work the same way, but SB seems to be a bit more safe and natural as far as the foods you can eat... Let me put it like this,I am still not convinced that the extreme amount of fats you are eating on the Atkins is not doing something bad on the inside.

HEY ZARABELLE

I WAS GOING TO ASK EVERYONE THE SAME QUESTION. LOL

JUST ANOTHER QUESTION TO YOU EXPERT SBD'S, HOW MUCH WEIGHT DID YOU LOSE DURING YOUR 2 WEEK PHASE 1?

DO YOU LOSE AS MUCH WEIGHT AND AS QUICKLY AS WHAT YOU WOULD ON THE ATKINS DIET?

A few years ago, I did the Atkins and I lost 10 lbs in the 2 week period. Presently with SB, I lost only 4. Now, this may be a reflection of several things:

1.Before going on Atkins, I was eating really bad stuff like fast food fries, pizza, tacos, dairy queen etc. For a while now, I have been trying to avoid sugar and white breads anyway. Before I started SB, I was noticing my carb eating taking over.
2. I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism which makes it near to impossible to lose weight. I was exercising for 1 hour 5-6X a week and doing the WW point for 4 months with no weight loss! Exercise was walking and pilates. Pretty good chance I have insulin resistance due to my father's passing on his type 2 diabetic gene to me.
3. I am in my 30s as opposed to 20s.

South Beach seems to make more sense to me because of the lower saturated fat content of the foods he suggests. It doesn't make sense to not have fruit--a natural whole food that God made readily available to mankind. The potato and carrot I can do without (it is underground). An occasional hiccup won't completely harm you either if you are already consuming carbs. Just go back to your regular, healthy way of eating.

Thanks for the comments. I think Lou and I are going to give SB a two week trial and see how we get on.

I have just gone out and bought the book so will read that through before I start!

Cheers

Hi,

I was on Atkins for about a month and saw very little weight loss... less than 10 lbs :( I was kinda discouraged, since it was working really well for my mom, so I blamed it on my birth control pill. Then I heard about the SBD and thought I'd give it a try... including Atkins, since the beginning of February, I've lost 29 lbs!!! I guess the low fat/good carb combo just works better for me, or maybe it would have started coming off if i had stayed on Atkins, I don't know. But I know that now I can have a little bread!!!! and yogurt!!! you have no idea how excited i was! (or I guess maybe you do  )

I'm hearing you Sarah.... I'm very excited that I will be able to have a little bread and also a little All-Bran (never thought I'd ever say that!!!)

Can you have full fat milk with All Bran in P2? Surely, this would slow down the absorbtion on the carbs?

Zarabelle, I know! I almost never ate cereal in my pre-SBD days... and now I'm so excited to eat some Fiber1 in the morning

I think on the SBD you're really supposed to stick with low fat (skim milk) :( I hardly notice the difference anymore, but then I used to drink very little milk! I even made my boyfriend change, and he hasn't even mentioned it :P

The fiber slows down carb absorption just fine, so you should use 1% or skim to help your overall health (cholesterol, heart, etc.) instead of fatty milk.

Ahh, I see, thanks for clearing that up - it makes sense.
