I have gained 55 pounds since starting anti-depressants for anxioty and panic attacks. Will the South Beach Diet still help me. I can't stop the medication. Does anyone know why this type meds cause weight gain? I am small boned and used to weigh 120. Now I weigh 175 and am miserable. My knees kill me and I have no energy. My doc says I am pre-diebetes. Will this diet help me? Help!!

Cherylal:

I am not on anti-depressants, however, I had to go on prednizone for an infection in my lymphnode that would not go away and have also gained about 40 pounds since August of last year. I also hate it, we just got back from vacation and I was looking at the pictures and I don't even look like me. My face looks so bloated - I have always had a thin face and a a skinny neck.

Anyway, I started SBD the end of February and it is working for me. I lost 11 pounds the first month - it is not FAST, but it is working for me.

Does your medication increase your appetite, is that why you gained?
That is what prednizone does, plus it is a steroid and make you retain water, so you have to watch salt intake.

Give SBD a try and let me know how you do....

:) Sandy,
Thank you for your encouragement. Yes, the anti-depressant makes me more hungry. However, I over-heard my doctor call it "The make-you-fat medicine". I think it slows down my metabolism. I hope this diet works for me. I hate being fat. My knees ache. I am small boned and should not be carrying this extra weight. I am 35; weigh 175 and only 5.4 in height. Do you know if salt is allowed on phase 1 for me? And what about caffiene?
Thank you.

Hi Cheryl

Many people on antidepressants are successful on SBD... DH and myself included. Give it a go... if you eliminate all the "bad foods" from your diet, it can only be good for you, right?

Also, salt and caffiene are both allowed, but limit your amounts ( as you've probably already guessed) If you are big on both, you need to cut back. SOme is ok... alot is bad.

I add alittle salt daily (althought I do now read RDA salt% on labels and try to make better choices... something I never concerned myself with before), and drink caffiene in the morning. DH has substituted Mrs Dash for his salt.

Hope that helps.
Good Luck

Hi Cheryl

It's the general concensus that days 3-5 are probably the hardest days of all. Hang tight and it will all start getting easier before you know it! Hope today was a good day!

Hello.
I am glad to hear that it will get better by day 6. Today was a rough day. I really wanted cake. I love, love cake frosting. I eat it right from the container. I did resist tho. It was difficult. Made me more cranky. I had some unexpected stress as well. My sweet baby, Cotton, my persian cat of 4 years old, is peeing blood. I noticed it in the middle of the night when he woke me up and showed me he had went on the kitchen tile. It scared me so much. Plus I didn't have the $200 bucks the emergency vet charges so I thought he might die. He made it through the night and this morning, my wonderful son Matt gave me the $150 that it took to take Cotton to the regular vet. It was the money he is saving up for his first car. Matt is turning 16 this month. He is so eager for a car, yet made this generous offer out of love. God bless him.
:) The vet doc did an urinalisis on Cotton and gave him a shot + pills for me to give him over two weeks. I have to watch him pee to make sure he doesn't get a block in his urethra. Wow, I really wanted to stress eat!! Pigging-out is like self-medicating for me. Anyone else like that? I hope Cotton gets well. He is our baby.
Thanks for listening.

Yes I gained alot of weight from Anti-depressants (and major depression)---(I was on several different kinds over a period of 2 years or so). I just went off them a couple weeks ago and am going to be starting SB to try and get all the weight off. I've already lost 7-10lbs since coming off the med (without dieting or any lifestyle change)...just have a bit more energy since coming off them.

Hi Cheryl

I'm so sorry to hear your kitty is sick  BUT, Congrats on your tremendous willpower :D AND your wonderfully generous son (a true reflection on you) :D

If you can get through a situation like that, you will surely make it to your goal... Now, anytime you're tempted to "self-medicate" with food, remember that you were once even strong enough to resist when your dear kitty was so sick!

Good work, keep it up :D

A couple years ago I was put on anti-depressents (as one in a series of things) to see if they would help with migraines (I was having 4-8 a month!) It helped cut my migraines down to 4-5 a month (NOT good enough imo) but I noticed they messed completely with my "full" triggers. I would eat and never feel as if I were full. So I'd just keep eating and I'd get edgy if I stopped. In two months I'd gained 8 lbs. I complained to the doctor who said weight gain was a common side effect of the medication. Since they didn't get rid of the migraines, I'm using other methods now. But that was unnerving to me. My weight gain has been because I graze, not overeat at one sitting. I had felt like I had no control over myself. A grazer that can't stop is in real trouble! :(

I am planning on starting the SBD soon and I am on anti-depressant, but also plan on weening off it in a week or so. Just curious to see what meds people are on? I am taking fluoxetine (Prozac). It hasnt caused major weight gain, but Im afraid it might impede my weightloss.

Hi!

I gained about 30 pounds on Lexapro. It was no fun! How can you be overweight and not depressed! I went off the meds, because my hubby and I are trying to have a baby, and the depression came back with a vengance. When I started the SBD I was still suffering, and thought that maybe losing weight would make me happy...and then the most amazing thing happened...I got happy again...cutting out all carbs and sugars made me feel normal, with NO MEDS! WHOO! Then I found this great book, called "Potatoes, Not PRozac" which is a book all about how eating right can affect your mental health...although the word Potato is in the title, it's VERY similar to SBD, cutting sugars and carbs to make you more mentally healthy...

YOU can lose weight! YOU can be happy without meds! YOU CAN DO IT!

Hello Everyone.
I am Cheryl and I started this thread. First I want to say 'Thank You' to everyone that has replied so far. I feel so much more encouraged now. When I found out my medicine was making me gain weight, I felt like there was no hope. Now, I have hope again. You folks are the best. I have found my new friends. :D

Second, I want to congratulate Katherine. I am truly happy for you. Thank you for sharing your information with me. I went off my meds before, for 9 months, and got really, really sick. I am too afraid to try it again. I suffer from panic attacks and clinical depression origination from abuse in my past. However, hearing your story really warmed my heart. You have been blessed for sure. Have a great life. Sincerely, Cheryl from GA. :)

hey everyone....just finished with day 1 on SBD...thought i'd check the web for forums. i'm also on medication, which caused some major weight gain 3 years ago. i used to be really skinny in high school and i could eat anything without gaining weight. i'm 22 now and of course it's only natural that my metabolism is slowing down, but with the meds, the cravings for carbs and the weight gain have been really getting me down. it takes a lot of self-discipline to not have any sugar, but amazingly i'm not craving it at the end of the day. so for everyone out there on meds, i sympathize with you. hang in there...
