In the past few weeks, I received a few error messages when trying to access this site. This usually occurs during peak hours...early evening, after work. I'm not sure if it's a server issue. I suspect, because of the timing, these are simply peak "traffic" hours.
I often frequent the journal forum but have noticed that it still boasts journals dating back to 2003, journals that haven't been posted in for years. Even the current, popular journals I try to access are very slow to load (and I'm on broadband)
Are the error messages a bandwidth issue?
If so, is it possible to delete some of the journals & threads that no longer show participation. Threads that have had no activity in 90 days aren't really viable...isn't it possible to install an automatic-no activity-90 day delete.
The admins have been vigilant in posting important FAQ's as stickies and announcements in the forums...but newbies tend to read the most current info...much of which has been repeated many times. That's simply the nature of such a popular site. Since the important info this site has to offer is destined to be repeated no matter how vigilant the admins are in there posting of FAQs, it might make sense to prune the site if that's what's at the core of the slow loading and error messages.
Please don't tell me it's my computer    |

The mods have no control over those kinds of issues. You could try emailing or PMing, the system administrator, sbdiet. Her profile is here and you can click on the "email" and/or "pm" button from her profile.

There were some just general issues with the forum in terms of access a couple days ago (e.g. the database or server were "down" for much of the day, but yes I would say it is a popular site and can only take so much traffic before it slows down or stops allowing access to the database during high periods. She has changed the settings before to allow more people access, but the downside is that it is slower during peak periods. If she tries to speed up the response time, fewer people can get on and more will get the types of error messages you were getting. I think the current settings are a pretty good balance, although they tend to lead to a lot of multiple posts from those who get impatient and think nothing is happening!
Some good suggestions though! |
