I went on Lexapro and gained 20 pounds in 2 months. My Dr. said it was typical and I shouldn't gain any MORE weight. In the meantime I want to try and LOSE the weight. I lost 6 pounds the first two weeks and went to P2. I haven't lost any more weight but I haven't gained any either. I'm trying to get up the stomach to go back on P1 to see if it helps. Anybody else experience this?? Am I having problems because of the meds?? :(

Antidepressant meds are notorious for being a cause of weight gain. Something about how they work tends to make it way too easy to pile on the pounds, or have trouble dropping them if you're making an effort in that direction.

I'd guess the meds are a major factor in the problems you're having with losing the weight. However, you should NOT stop taking them! Your doctor prescribed them for a reason, and it's important that you stick with them. My advice would be to try increasing any exercising you're doing. This will have a dual effect: it will increase your metabolism to help shed some weight, and it will also help your mental state. Exercise has been shown to be very helpful in helping to treat depression.

Good luck, and stick with it! You can do it!

I started on Lexapro the same time I started SBD and so far, I've lost 15 lbs. in 5 weeks. So the Lexapro doesn't seem to be harming me, although I have experienced weight gain on Prozac. I'm hoping when I lose more of this weight and with good weather just around the corner, maybe I'll start feeling better mentally and able to wean myself off of the Lexapro. But don't do that without your doctor's permission and his instructions on how to stop taking them.

I'll let you know if I start to stall while on P2 and you do the same, okay?

Meds definetly affect weight gain and loss. I worked in psychiatric Social Work for many years and many of my patients were battling weight problems often related to meds. I was diagnosed as Bipolar about 4 years ago and was on 7 psychiatric meds at one point. I gained over 60 pounds on top of my already over weight body. My current MD has me down to three medications, but the Lithium I take is notorious for putting on/keeping on weight. Since the first of the year I've lost 20 # using my own diet plan loosely based on the Glycemic index and exercise (walking 45 minutes, 5 days/week) I decided to skip phase 1 and start phase 2 beginning yesterday I've changed my exercise to going to Curves 5 days/week and riding my exercycle 3 days/week. I'm hoping to lose 50# more despite my meds. Hang in there. :P

Wow! Thanks all. I feel so supported. I definitely will not go off the meds until I get the Dr. ok, it's made such a difference for me. But at least I don't feel alone!

I'm on Verapamil for my blood pressure. It slows the heart rate and decreases the blood pressure..... so forget it when it comes to aerobics and the heart rate count. If I can get my heart rate to 100 I'm excited. It's a catch 22 because if I can get the weight off I don't have to take the meds yet the meds seem to decrease my ability to get the weight off.

I'm 29 years old and was put on Lithium when I was 16. I also take Synthroid. It put weight on me over the years but for the last 8 years my weight has always been bet 160-165 lbs. This is my 5th day on SB. I like the diet. I work out at least 5-6 days a week. I can already feel myself getting smaller. Taking the meds is a bummer regarding the weight gain because it's like I have to fight even harder to lose weight. I snuck a peek at my weight on the scale this morning ( when I wasn't going to do so until next Saturday) and I lost 1 lb so far + I am just ending my menstrual cycle. I am currently 156 lbs, 5'3" and I want to lose 19 more lbs.

When I read the success stories and how quickly others have lost, I remind myself that I am taking medication that will slow down my progress. I am not looking for quick loss but I am hoping that the pounds will continue to drop at a steady pace.

There are lots of meds that make weight loss more difficult... but I don't think there are any that actually make it impossible. I stalled for the first 5-6 weeks of P2 (I actually GAINED a pound)... so stalls happen without meds too!
