| This is probably a stupid question but - How do I make sure the time zone is correct? I am from Sault ste Marie Canada and the time now is 2:20pm and before when I was posting it would show a 5 hr difference ahead like7:20? Do I change the GMT to - 5 hrs? :? |

| Seems reasonable that that would work. Give it a try and do a test post and see if that works. The eastern time zone of the US and Canada is GMT -5:00 hours according to the little properties tab on my computer clock. Make sure you click on the Submit button at the bottom of your profile page to accept your changes. |

What or better question, where is GMT time zone and how do I set my time? I am in Missouri, Central Standard Time, but I am not sure what GMT is? Bad education??? ...perhaps...
Thanks for all helpful replies! I have tried checking the faq's, but still could not resolve my problem. |

| Yours would be GMT -5 hours. It's in your profile down at the bottom of your preferences. |

GMT = Greenwich Mean Time
This particular Greenwich is in England, home of the Royal Observatory. Earth's longitudes, and therefore time zones, begin and end there at what is known as the prime meridian (0 degrees longitude). GMT doesn't adjust for daylight savings time, so the plus/minus hours will vary depending on the time of year and daylight savings observances.
This link might help: http://www.souledout.org/nightsky/time/ut.html
Or double click on the clock in your computer's system tray and click on the "time zone" tab. It shows the differential for each time zone you want to choose there, but you need to do the DST adjustment yourself I think.
Why the prime meridian runs through the Royal Observatory in Greenwich is an interesting story about a serious problem at the time and it's ultimate solution. Well if you are as geeky as I am anyway! |

Well being tourists we did the whole tour thing at the RO while we were there. I found it fascinating. Very pretty spot as well! And yes we got the obligatory photo of standing straddling the prime meridian and being in both hemispheres at the same time! Also got our car locked in a private off-site parking "lot" and had "fun" trying to get it out. :twisted: Was a memorable day from many perspectives!
When I was finding the links, I didn't know that GMT is actually an out of date term and UT or Universal Time is the current lingo. GMT still seems to be much more common lingo. |
