I am trying to find out if it would be ok to substitute a low carb beer for red wine, any thoughts? I do love red wine, but it makes me so tired. I have always loved beer, but the diet says a big no no to beer. I was looking at Michelob Ultra and it has less carbs and calories in a 12oz bottle than a 4 oz glass of red wine (WOW). I do realize that sugar is an issue and I couldn't find the sugar content on either so I dont know if it is compareable or not. I really dont want this to turn into the Vodka debate about alcoholics and lushes...Im just talking about friends coming over to the house and having a couple drinks, or going out with my husband on the weekend, does anyone think the low carb beer might be a better selection.
Thank you for any advise...

I dont know this for fact but I have been told that Miller Lite has less carbs than Mich Ultra. I am a chardonnay freak so that will be harder to give up than rice and potatoes....lol. And for the preachers, dont remark. I am too old for lectures!

a 12-ounce bottle of Miller Lite has 96 calories and 3.2 grams of carbohydrates, and a bottle of Michelob Ultra Low Carbohydrate has only one less calorie and about half a gram fewer carbohydrates but costs 12% more. In comparison, regular beers typically contain about 150 calories and more than 10 grams of carbohydrates per serving.
Not much of a difference between the regular light and low carb. I don't think it's too big a deal, if you've already lost weight to have either the lowcarb beer or wine if it's just for an occasional evening. |

Mystery solved. Thank you. I was going only on what I was told but you are right, very little difference so it would become a taste issue. Though I have never had the Mich Ultra, I have been told it is very good.

I too am a beer lover, and like you guys, enjoy my occasional night out. I have tried the Michelob Ultra and it's not bad. I have the same problem with wine; it just gives me a headache and makes me want to go to sleep. If the carb and sugar count isn't much different, I say go for the beer.

Although I love full-flavored beers like Sam Adams, et al., I must say that Michelob Ultra tastes very good for so few carbs and calories. Now, my question is, can this be drunk in Phase 1, since it is so low in carbs (2.6 per bottle), or does one need to hold off on this until Phase 2?

I think that the big picture is that beer has a higher GI than almost any other alcohol and it will give you a big drop in blood sugar causing cravings. I know that the only time I cheat in phase 2 is when I have even 1 glass of wine.

Maltose IS the main carb in beer. It's a sugar. Like sucrose, or fructose.

I was just reading that maltose is 2 glucose molecules attached together, so it's basically a double sugar!

Anyone want my homebrewing set-up?? (j/k) I've still got 5 or 6 Guinness draft cans in the downstairs fridge too from the St. Patty's day sales. I'm hoping I can give them away to a friend of mine this weekend. I like red wine a lot too, so that is a plus, but yeah a nice full-flavored, micro-brewed ale would taste pretty good!!
