Hi netsurfer!
I started SB with my husband in March - he lost a total of 17 and I lost only 3 lbs, and not until I hit phase 2 and started paying attention. I too had a child late in life - lost all the weight, but gained it back after chickening out of shoulder surgery and helping my mom through breast cancer. I went back to Phase 1 in earnest last Monday and have seen pretty good results, even though the pounds are coming off slowly, I'm not in such an amazing funk - crankiness - and I enjoy the odd meals I've been preparing.* We've gone to the gym a few times as a family (our almost three-year-old sitting with the other kids in a trance in front of a video), and I've ridden my bike to work a couple of times too. I think going back for just a few days is okay, but I still have to prove to myself that my willpower can be fully restored after crashing off the wagon. I survived our annual fundraising dinner - bypassing potatoes without a thought, bread too, and just pushed the chocolate mousse and raspberry parfait to the side for others to enjoy. Now I'm off to New Orleans for a 4 day conference - any advice on things to avoid and jump for? It may be easier to do SB in Northern California - just because there are so many foodies and organic grocers around. But off I go to Cajun Wonderland!
You asked about snacks - the ones we've given up...
I've always been a potato lover (but not chips), my husband is the rice-guy. I love salty snacks while he craves cookies and cake. But did I ever decline when he offered to share an evening sweet? Not in the last 10 years! But to tell the truth, my biggest downfall was those big bags of dried fruit and nuts they sell at Costco. I'd keep a bag of that, and of the soy-flavored rice snacks - same size bag - in my office - and powered through them weekly. That and passing many a lunch hour at my desk soon required a shoe-horn to get me in and out of that chair in front of my computer.
So I felt so terrible about the yucky clothes I was forced to recycle for work - some former maternity/transition clothes no less - that while husband and daughter were out enjoying Disney On Ice Pricness Classics (yup - that's what he wanted for his birthday!), I went to Ann Taylor and purchased nice clothes at last. And now they're falling off me!
The lesson? I don't know - I'm still too deep in this SB thing for perspective
Good luck to you! |

Dierdre2,
Love that name. I used to have a neighbor with that name, when we lived in Florida and I had baby girl 1. She had had a baby girl a few months before I did, and we were close.
Re: the clothes, I totally understand. I am DYING to buy some new ones. Every week, I try to resist going to the mall. One thing I have done is to buy a few things at Target. Have you seen Isaac Mizrahi's new line at Target? Everything is fairly inexpensive, and some of it is pretty cute. I just bought a really cute, spaghetti strap sundress, navy blue, with light blue straps, and trim around the neck. He had some cute casual work clothes as well; skirts, sweaters, and some cute pants. Anyway, most of it is 19.99, or less, so it doesn't empty your wallet. Just a thought!
Re: New Orleans, I would make sure I ordered a big salad with everything, and pretty much supplement it with some yummy New Orleans style food. I am sure you can get fish, shrimp, etc. everywhere, so that would work. I am allergic to shellfish, but if you are not, HEAVEN!! My friend made pizza on the grill Friday night, and I brought a great big salad, with fun things like japeno stuffed olives, and heart of palm. I covered my plate with salad (a few times), and put one piece of pizza on it. I gave most of to my 3 year old, ate few bites of the cheese and onions on top. So, the strategy was to have a LOT of food. I was full, but with mostly salad. I am sure there be lots of appetizers that will be SB friendly, and you could order a few of those, and have it with vegies or salad. That way you could get a taste of lots of things....treat yourself, and you won't feel too deprived by missing the bread or desserts. And, if you do splurge, ENJOY IT! And don't worry. We'll be here when you get back! |

| I just started today on the south beach after doing weight watchers and getting to my goal. However, with going to the gym, I've gained muscle, which is good, but I'm having difficulty losing anymore. So, I figured try something to lose a few of those last extra pounds. I know for P1 basically no dairy, alcohol, fruits, or starches. But I have a question for P2. Are smirnoff or mixed drinks better than beer overall? I'm still in need of some guidence. |

I haven't read any posts for a week. I finally got through them...I was going to have a question for all of you, but it looks like you guys already anwered them. I was getting worried because I am going to be starting P2 on Tuesday. I lost 4 pounds on week 1 and ONLY 1 pound this week. I was kinda upset, but I see that some of you experience the same thing. WHEW! You guys make everything better!!
Quick question is Skim Plus and/or fat-free half and half ok for P2?
Thanks!!

ps...looking forward to eating fruit again..yippee |

Snacks... well, before SB, I pretty much ate a continuous stream of cookies, punctuated by the odd bag of chips with Diet Coke. I also have 2 little girls (3 and 5), so I would buy stuff that was supposed to be for them, but they'd hardly get any!
Two snacks I really like now are hummus with red pepper and/or celery, and apples with peanut butter (P2). For a snack at work, I core the apple and fill the center with the peanut butter. Of course, I am starting to realize that peanut butter, even with its low glycemic index (and this is natural pb), could become a craving problem for me!
I was going to write today anyway out of frustration - tomorrow is my official weigh-in, I'm up 1lb, my TOM is over a week overdue. I alternate between thinking I must get it soon (and then I'll lose the lb again), and that I've just been eating too much and not exercising and so of course I'm not losing. Argh! Has anyone else experienced delays sinced they started SBD? I've been on P2 for 6 weeks, so it's not a P1 effect... |

Guys, I weighed myself again and it appears that I lost 2.5 lbs on week 1 of P1. I'm really happy!
Also, I was wondering where I can find SF pudding or if such a thing exists? I always see SF jello and FF pudding, but never SF pudding. Help? |

Suzy,
I love the peanut butter too, and have to watch myself. I tried the recipe posted earlier with peanut butter/ricotta and freezing it, and ate way too much, just sampling it while I was making it. Seriously...I was trying to see whether it needed more this and that, and by the time it was done I felt like I'd eaten a meal. I had a very lite dinner. Anyway, I made it both with and w/out the cocoa powder. For one batch I made it with vanilla, ricotta, peanut butter, and splenda. For the other, I used cocoa powder instead of vanilla. Per the previous post about it, I put some in the freezer. Very good. I will say that it seems the more peanut butter in the recipe, the less hard it gets in the freezer. One of them, I have to sort of chip it off. But that is kind of good as it slows me down :) Anyway, back to the peanut butter thing, I do have to be careful as well. I take a jar to work, to avoid the salty lowfat snacks, and eat a spoonful here, and there. So, I really have to be careful about nuts, and eating it in my ricotta dessert. Still, it is nutritious, and better for me than my cheese nips/popcorn. And it fills me more.
Also, re: being late for TOM. I don't think I have noticed that effect. It seems to me that I have heard others say it though.....not sure whether it was on this thread, or the regular board. And, other things can affect it, and it is possible it is not due to the diet, but something else. I HAVE noticed being up a lb. at least, during that time, so I imagine that it what is going on. It will go away for sure.
Anita, re: sugar free pudding...I wish I could give you advice on where to find it. That is one snack I have not tried. What I found with the sugar candy, is that it is mixed in with the regular stuff, which makes it hard to spot. I am sure you looked by the pudding though. Sometimes if you ask your grocer, they will order it for you. I will look at my Lowes next time I go though, and tell you if I see it. I also know there are all sorts of websites that carry low carb/low sugar/sugar free products. I have seen a few of them after a google search on low carb products. Probably one of them would carry it. |

Wow! Hello everyone! Lots of activity on this board over the weekend.
Anita - I have not found the pre-prepared SF/FF Pudding in those convenient little cups, but I have found it in mix (powder) form. Jello makes it and it is right by the SF Jello at my grocery store. I have found it in vanilla, chocolate, and white chocolate. Although, it is getting more and more scarce - I think everyone is on SB. And congrats on that 2.5 lbs!
netsurfer - I too am aiming for 117 (and started at 127). It sure seems slow coming! I haven't even had any kids yet. You asked about snacks...where to begin? I had no idea how horrible it was to grab the box of Cheez Nips when I came home from work. Plus, I keep a candy dish at work with Hershey's kisses in it and it was so hard to keep my hands out of it before SBD. Now, I am amazed at how strong those cravings used to be - the candy dish is still there, but I have no problems now.
Deirdre2 - About the clothes - we just bought my husband 4 new suits in January and now they are all falling off him. I told him that at least he can fit back into all those old suits that he had "grown" out of! netsurfer - thanks for the Target tip for us ladies "in between" our starting and goal weights.
byebyebooty - (still my favorite SBD name!) CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Happy engagement! That is so exciting. When is the big day? Now you have more motivation than ever! My husband and I SO should have done SBD before our wedding last August. We look back at pictures and - yikes! Is that us?
tadolphin - actually, now I think skim milk and ff half & half are okay for P1 as well as P2 - so enjoy. Way to go on those 5 lbs in P1!
littlektgirl - if you haven't gotten the book already, it is worth the investment. I think you can find it for about $11 on the internet. Dr. talks a lot about alcohol in there. Beer is a definite no-no (although there has been some media controversy on that...). In P2, the best alcohol to add back in is a glass of red wine. Good luck! (Oh, and now low-fat dairy is fine in P1 too.)
Phew! I tried to answer most of the questions that I could - hope it helped. My weigh-in this morning was uneventful. I am getting ready for TOM, though - so I am not too upset with it. Started at 127 - goal of 118 or 117 - today's (start of Week 9) weight 122. The lowest # I have seen on the scale is 121 (last week). I will keep at it. Keep your fingers crossed that next week I will see 120!
Good luck everyone! |

| Jello actually makes SF FF pudding, but its not P1 friendly because cornstarch is the thickening agent. Sorry. Its P2 friendly so if you can hold out for 2 weeks, you can enjoy it. Instead try adding a little vanilla extract, splenda and cocoa to the ricotta and then throw it in a blender until smooth. Its almost a pudding-like consistency. |

Well, I think I'm back on track - weighed in today
Height 5'4"
130/125/123 today!!
Goal 120
Stretch 117
Last night when everyone else was having Belgian Chocolate Pudding from Trader Joe's - I made a disgusting concoction of cooked (steel cut) oatmeal and stevia-sweetened dark chocolate powder. My husband begged for a taste and then went running for water - but it made me feel a little less deprived (we had no ricotta in the house). I know oats aren't allowed until Phase 2, but it was worth it. I'm looking forward most of all to my first glass of red wine
Lately, as I look through the book, I'm thinking about my 3 yr old's favorite foods, and how to make them healthier. She loves the instant oatmeals - but I switched her to steel-cut this morning and she ate it up without comment. I've always used multigrain bread for her PB &J, but they use brown sugar and enriched flour just the same. She loves chicken and broccoli with rice, and black beans, chicken and rice rolled into a flour tortilla - but how to make the transition to healthy versions. I'm not trying to SB her - just apply what I'm learning to give the best nutrition I can!
I've also purchased some flax seed meal to see if I can feel full a little longer (I've always been an eating machine) |

alihoo - thanks for the good wishes! i still can't stop looking at my ring :) maybe i'll take your advice and try to get the fiance (!) to go on SBD with me. He's pretty supportive of my diet, and lately he's been complaining about the (IMHO, nonexistent) extra inch or two on his waist. Might make him feel better about it, at least.
I'm back on track today after a weekend of indulgence... actually going back to P1 for a couple of days. Going to the gym again too...
OK, I have kind of an embarrassing question, but I'm curious if anyone else has encountered this. I was cheating since Wednesday, having white bread and cream sauces and desserts and too much wine, and all weekend my stomach has not been happy... I have no doubt that it's directly related to my diet - it started the day I first cheated, and ended yesterday. I'm fine now, but I'm a little worried about what will happen when I get to P3, if this is the way my body reacts to extra carbs. Is this because I added too many carbs too quickly? When I do it gradually in P3 like I'm supposed to, will I be OK?
Thanks, guys! |

Hi all -
Phase 1
Well, I weighed in today: I'm down 3 lbs since last Wednesday (forgot to weigh myself on that Monday start date). My sugar cravings are going down because I've since found SF jello and SF popsicles. I got in a bathing suit yesterday and I'm not as discouraged as I was a couple of weeks ago. Keepin' the faith!! |
