Hi all! DH and I have done very well on Phase I and are starting phase II. I want to try to have an open faced turkey sandwich once in while, and I am confused as to what types of bread I can have. I bought a loaf of Pepperidge Farm 100% Stone Ground Whole Wheat bread and it is good! But am unsure if it is OK. It says Natural Whole Grain on it, and the first ingredient is Unbromated Stone Ground 100% Whole Wheat Flour. Which sounds OK to me. But then it has water, crushed wheat, wheat gluten, corn syrup... blah blah. Do all breads have these? If this isn't OK, can someone please recommend one that is good tasting and good for SBD? Thanks a million, I am so glad I found this board!

| I'm new to SBD so can't answer your question, but would be curious to see replies and also comments on the new "Carb Counter" breads I've been seeing on the store shelves lately. |

jlgear, that bread looks fine, as long as it has at least 3 g of fiber per slice. 5 or 6 g is better, but I haven't been able to find any that high.
As far as low carb breads, I answered that here:

You could try looking for a European rye bread. They are usually quite heavy and compact, look for one without any sugar. I've seen them at my local produce/grocery store. Sometimes they are in a refrigerated case. I even saw one that had sunflower seeds and rye in it, no other ingredients. Whole foods has many whole grain breads, but some have sugar or honey in them. It is hard to find a whole wheat whole grain bread without any white flour or sweeteners in it.
Good luck, eat healthy!

Breads to Buy (Phases 2 and 3)
Why are whole-grain breads better for you than breads made with enriched or refined flour? One reason is that whole-grain breads have a lower glycemic index. Another is that whole grains contain phytochemicals that may help cut the risk of heart disease and cancer. If you're in Phase 2 of the diet and can start eating bread again, here are some good brands to buy:
Sourdough breads
Pepperidge Farm:
100% Stoneground Whole Wheat
Natural Whole Grain 9 Grain
Natural Whole Grain German Dark Wheat
Pepperidge Farm Natural Whole Grain Crunchy Grains or Multi-Grain
Rubschlager:
European Style Whole Grain
100% Rye Rye-Ola Sunflower
100% Rye Rye-Ola Rye
100% Rye Rye-Ola Pumpernickle
Brownberry:
100% Whole Wheat
Natural 12 Grain
Natural Oatnut
Other brands:
Nature's Own 100% Whole Wheat
Mrs. Baird's 100% Whole Wheat
Roman Meal 100% Whole Wheat
Arnold 100% Whole Wheat dinner
In Canada:
Dempsters "Whole Grains" line of breads is high in fibre, and is SBD-friendly. |

| Thanks for the bread lists! I find myself spending an inordinate amount of time in the grocery store, reading bread labels. :) |

Hi all,
I have found a GREAT bread for phases 2 and 3 at Costco. It is called "Healthy Way" organic twenty-grain bread with 14 carbs and 4 gms of fiber per slice . . . this is really good stuff, and great tasting (especially if you like the real nutty breads). It is made by Olafson's Baking Co. in BC, Canada and the wesite is: www.olafsons.com
Happy chewing!!

Speaking of bread and phase II. Given the choice, is it better to have:
1- WW tortilla
2- WW pita bread
3- WW bread
I love all three so I could go for any of them! |

| All are good choices. The best one is probably the one with the most fiber and the least sugar. |

| I love the p farm 9 grain bread! Instead of doing the sandwhich open faced I cut it in a triangular half and just pile the meat and cheese on with a bit of hummus and eat it that way! |
