The only problem I had with WW was that it would allow me to justify a binge and not make me stay accountable for the quality of food I ate.

I'd eat almost nothing for breakfast, skip snack and lunch and save my points for Wendy's on the way home. That would take up 20 of the 24 points I was allowed in a day, and I'd subsist on nothing but water, sugar free jello and 0-point veggies for the rest of the day. Or I'd eat oatmeal for breakfast, but leave their recommended fruit out of it, and have a handfull of M&Ms instead (same point value). No matter what the points say, that's not healthy.

By allowing only SB foods, but still following the points tracker, I know I'm staying in WW-recommended calorie limits, AND I'm eating in a healthy manner. I also know if I'm getting dangerously low on my daily calories, and to have snack with more cheese and protien if I see I've reached 3:00 and I've only spent 1/3 of my points like I did yesterday.

Monday and Tuesday were my first days trying this, and they were almost unbearably hard. But yesterday was easier, and today, my work day is already half over and I'm doing fine.

I am having a little whole grain bread with my lunch, and my afternoon snack even though I'm technically supposed to be on phase one. Before, I couldn't get through p1 because of terrible afternoon headaches and grumpiness with my kids. Having that small extra carb boost keeps me from turning into Devil-mom in the afternoons.

(BTW, it's not my weigh-in day, but onofficially, I'm looking at a 4 lb loss in the past week.)

I calculated all the pts in the book if you were to follow each day on the menu plan for P1. I figured each day averaged around 30 pts, whereas on WW I was only alloted 22 pts/day with 35 flex for the week. On P1 this would be an extra 30-40 pts a wk. (Haven't even looked at P2 yet) The strange thing I've noticed however, was that in looking back at my journal entries in Jan & Feb. (which I did lose 20 pounds following WW) I was averaging about 110 carbs/day with 13-1500 calories. I have followed the SB meal plans and on day 1 & 2 ate about 1000 calories, and around 40 carbs/day yet I've eaten 50 WW pts.

This is all trial for me... I am digging the meals.... and am liking the energy boost- I feel healthier, but I think I will look at this objectively and take the knowledge I am getting from all the diets I've tried and make it work for me. I think on WW I was only concerned with the fat and fiber and never looked at sugars or carbs. On SB, I realize that I'm a carb addict. Yet I am careful to watch on SB not just looking for low carb items. Such as in the salads and dressings, I look for low sugar, low carb, and low fat. For ex: the grilled vegetable recipie called for 1/4 cup of olive oil. Now on WW I couldn't have olive oil without it taking up most of my pts so I would spray the veggies with FF oil spray. Well, it's also 0 carbs, so I used 1/8 cup of oil and sprayed the vegetables with the rest. I believe the oil is a good fat for me, but I don't know if I needed that much. It's the same with all the cheese. I missed cheese on WW and could never get enough dairy. On SB, I know following one meal plan a day a lot of the pts are coming from all the cheese. So I figure I like the cheese stick for snack, but can skip it out of the eggs or salad.

Well this was long.... Good luck to us all

Hi me and my daughter just started sbd 5 days ago and we have both lost 3.5 lbs.. we were both at a plateau.. what did you mean when you said

After reading the SBD book, I realize now many of the bad habits that I turned back to which has hindered my weight loss. WW is a great program if you work it properly, and I wasn't.

just curious what you thought about how you thought you weren't eating well or right. its been so hard for us.. up and down.. losing slowly on ww espcially for my daughter whos 16 shes had the hardest time.. and she can't believe she has already lost on this. i hope it keeps working for her and me.. especially for her. if you have any suggestions it would be great thanks Michelle

dmys wrote: Hi Mlee,
I am doing both SBD and WW right now. I have been on WW for two years (this is my 4th time). This time around I have lost 30 pounds (I have 55 to lose). However, I have been on a plateau since October. I have been kicking the same two pounds around for 5 months and getting extremely frustrated to the point that I thought about giving up. But I have too much invested and I know if I quit that I will gain my weight back and then some - just like I did the other three times that I quit.

My boss told me that his doctor told him about SBD and it piqued my interest. I bought the book and figured that it would help me get past my plateau by going back to the basics. I make my food choices by following SBD, but I still count my WW points for the meals and I have gone back to journaling everything. After reading the SBD book, I realize now many of the bad habits that I turned back to which has hindered my weight loss. WW is a great program if you work it properly, and I wasn't.

I started SBD last Saturday and weighed in at WW on Thurday. By that time, my home scale showed a loss of 5 lbs and at WW it was 3 lbs (I expect there to be a difference because when I weigh myself at home, it is before eating or drinking anything and without clothes. This was my first real weight loss since October. So I was thrilled! Today marks my one week on SBD and I have lost 2 more lbs for a total of 7 - one pound per day.

I like both programs, and I have no plans of quitting WW. In fact, I am determined to reach lifetime - now more than ever. WW gives me the support I need, and most importantly -- accountability for my own eating habits. Weighing in every week keeps me on my toes. Eventually I will go back to having more freedom in my food choices that WW allows, but right now, I need to start over and that is what SBD is doing for me.

Hope this helps!

Hi Michelle,
I have been a continous WW member for over two years now and I was losing weight very slowly to the point that it was agonizing (I decided to read about SBD after a five month plateau). Before I read the SBD book, I always thought that I was eating healthy. On most days, my diet included two bananas and a bagful of carrots as in between snack. The first thing that I discovered when reading the book was that the natural sugars in these foods may have been hindering my weight loss. I still enjoy these foods on occasion, but I realize that I can't eat them the way I was. Plus, after being on WW for as long as I was, I reverted back to some old habits such as gum chewing. I love to chew the most sugariest bubble gum that I can find -- wads at a time. But, I wasn't counting the points. Plus, I would dump teaspoons of sugar in my coffee and not count the points. So I wasn't making myself accountable for my food intake. After reding SBD, I cut out all of the extra sugars and went back to making myself accountable for everything that I eat. I must be doing something right because I have lost 20 lbs since combining the two and I am two pounds from hitting goal.

I like the WW program, and it works great for me to use the points system to follow the SBD philosophy. Otherwise I would be eating all day long and I need to stay in control. As I have said before, I know that this isn't the answer for everybody, but it is what is working for me.

Good luck to you and your daughter!

I too was a WW follower (without attending meetings). I followed the program religiously for 6 years. And it worked, absolutely. In the first year I lost 50 pounds and have kept it off all this time... but the problem for me was, like others have said, I was keeping calorie and fat intake low but not getting the nutrients I need.

Before SBD a typical day was:
Handful of gummy lollies-- 1 point. (yes for breakfast)
Rice cakes-- 1 point
ff yogurt-- 1 point
tub peaches -- 1 point
Canned soup-- 1 point
Vegies with soy sauce-- 1 point.
So after the days eating and only 6 points.. I would have another 6 points of after dinner snacks!

Now on SBD I have lost a little more weight. I probably don't need to lose anymore. But more importantly I'm eating better.

Meat for the first time in years!

Actually I've noticed my "point" intake has gone down to 8- 10 each day. But the nutrients I'm eating have made me healthier, fuller and happier.

I think WW combined with SBD is a perfect eating plan, to lose weight or to just live well.

Hi my name is Lisa., I lost 26lbs. on WW about 5 years., ago Kept it off for about 2 yrs., then gained back 10. Then had another baby and never lost another 15, so I am back where I started 5 yrs. ago.

Thot I would give SBD a try because it is more restricting. I found that with WW I would use my points for cake and sweets etc., but two weeks of phase 1 and I lost l/2 lb. I can do that without dieting, so now I'm going to try WW again.

SBD seems too hard to do when you have to cook separately for yourself and your kids. Today is day 1 back on WW and I think if I keep track of how many points I'm using for each food group (like it says in the book) although my old leader said no more than 4-6 pts. in bread) I might do okay. Hoping for more than a 1/2 lb. loss next week.

I started with WW and hit a stall so tried SB and lost some more but have hit a stall again. I haven't lost anything since the end of May -- about the same time that I joined a health club and added exercise to my plan. I've been exercising one hour a day, 6 days a week and still haven't been able to lose more. Recently started keeping a WW journal again. Hepefully something will happen soon....

Hi Everyone,
I stumbled on this website and I found it very interesting and informative,
I just got back from south beach and hear so many succsess stories and decided to try it. I work out 5-6 times a week and very active,
I've been on ephederia since 96 and this was the only way to keep those extra pounds away now since I've given up since july 2003 then I went off and on with atkins, I would lose around 5 lbs then gain twice back as soon as I started eating carbs, I found that with atkins I wouldn't be able to work out as i normaly would and loss muscle which helped me keep thin, so i tryed the food combining in march, I would follow the idea of the beverly hills diet in the morning (one type of fruit in the blender) protine shake 3 hours later and salad, veggies and chicken or shrimp for dinner, I was then able to work harder with the firm, tao bo and lifet weights with ease, but the scale hasn't realy moved.
I'm 5'1 and went from 147 to 137 lbs (currantly), which seems large for my hight, but very musculer (I fit in a size 6).
this may be a good size to some women but for me I'm very petite and I need to lose more fat.
Yesterday was my first day on the ssb diet and I'm very excited to see hopefuly this extra fat to melt, this morning I've alraedy noticed my stomach flat and I have tons of energy from all the eating yesterday.
if there is any tips and suggestions please reply back I need the motivation!
Thanks
Tammy

I weighed in at WW today and I finally hit my goal weight! :D :D :D After 2 years 4 months and alot of struggle, frustration and now happiness!!! I am so excited and I can honestly credit the SBD philosophy for finally getting me over the huge plateau I was on and the WW point system for helping me keep my eating under control (even though I had a hard time controlling my pistachio intake at times). Piggybacking the two programs together has worked extremely well for me.

I have lost 52 lbs total and 24 of that has been since I started following SBD beginning on March 13. It feels great to finally achieve something that many times I doubted I would be able to do.

I was so excited that I wanted to share how well this worked for me. Good luck to all of you!!! :D :D

I've been on WW since last August, started SB in April, and then combined the two recently after not losing anything for several weeks. Finally I'm losing again! I am 1 pound short of losing 50 pounds!! Then another 25 to go...... The weight sure comes off slower as time goes on.

How awesome to have reached your goal weight! Fifty Two Pounds is a serious amount of weight to lose! Great Work!!

I've successfully followed low-carb programs for a couple of years but needed the discipline and structure of an organized system, so decided to join WW three weeks ago. Like you, I like the notion of be held mindful and accountable for what goes into my mouth by recording foods and points, and I love the group support, but I definitely needed more structure in WHAT I was allowed to eat. So I had the idea to combine SB and WW. I poked around online looking for ideas... and lo and behold I found this website. How validating to know that others think like me!

In fact, I am thinking of suggesting that my leader have a look at the site since so many people are coming up with this idea on their own that maybe Corporate WW should take notice.

DMYS, I wonder if you would please share with us a sample of your SBD/WW daily meal plan, including your daily points. Also, did you continue to use your 35 weekly flex points while following this SBD/WW plan?

Thanks, and congrats again. You should post before/after pics!

JAMIME

I just heard that WW is changing their program AGAIN to become more in line with SB.

I lost most of the weight I wanted to on WW last year but I was doing it while training for a marathon. When I wasn't running my butt off, WW slowly worked for me (if at all). Now, with a busy 6 month old I can't get in the workouts like I use to and SB has helped me lose what I wanted, far faster and with less 'emptiness' I felt with WW. I am not a 'portions' person, nor do I really like carbs (except for wine), so SB has been perfect for my lifestyle. It is so simple and I basically am satisfied that I don't THINK of food, whereas I was always thinking of food and my next meal with WW. My stomach would growl before bedtime with WW - terrible!

I have tried WW. and i absolutely hated it having to count the points and going to the meetings and stuff it just felt like a big hassle.. but i love SBD well it doesnt cost me that much compared to what i had to pay to weight watcher.. i just went to costco or samsclub and picked up the sbd book for under 30 bucks.. and the food wise... sbd might be more expensive, but i think that i am making wiser choices on food rather than cutting corners and heading for the junk food..

I too did WW. It woked for me long ago- I got rid of 116 pounds. I even became a WW leader. But then I moved, stopped going to meetings, gained weight...old habits came back so easily.

I started going back to WW in January. I lost 11 of the pounds I had gained back, but then hit a plateau. Like so many other said, I am a carbaholic. WW allows you to eat anything, so I would plan my day around how many carbs and low-point desserts I could find. Yeah, eveything was Fat Free, but Fat Free often means added sugar. And I would fill myself with "diet bread" 2 slices for one point. I was basically not eating any fruits, and I was definately not getting the nutrition I needed.

I am now starting SBD today. It seems like a sensible plan. I'm really hoping the plan will help reduce my cravings and my hunger.

Edit:
It's the strangest thing. I could never bring myself to journal on WW. And for some weird reason I keep thinking I need to journal now. LOL

Bottom line:

SBD teaches you to be smart about food and nutrition. WW does not.

I was on WW off and on from March 2001 until as recently as a couple of months ago. I initially lost 60 pounds on WW but gained 40 of it back.

WW taught me how to fit binges into my lifestyle. It taught me that I can have candy for an equal amount of points as I could have a piece of fruit. It taught me that you should have rice or pasta with dinner. Their frozen meals reinforced that notion.

I don't mean to totally slam WW because it does work for a lot of people. I just think that there is no one solution for every person. Every person is unique and every person needs to find their own way.

I hated counting points and cheating myself with them. On SBD I don't have to cheat. I'm down 10 pounds in the past couple of weeks and that was something that never, ever happened to me on WW. And I feel incredibly healthy. I can't believe I haven't touched fruit, bread, or "bread accessories" (rice, pasta, cereal, etc.). It's amazing to me how much this has helped me! :) [/b]
