I have to say that I am totally confused by the statements I'm reading that say that the first few days you are losing mostly water weight. What does that mean, how can you lose water weight if you are drinking so much water? I've never really understood what this means, could someone please explain this? Thanks so much for helping out, for some reason I feel a little stupid asking this question but I just have to know !

Another dieter Gloria was so kind to supply this info when I asked the same question. Here is what she posted. I hope it helps.

I found the following excerpt on a web site called Healthy Fat Burners. com. regarding water weight loss. I thought it was very interesting.
That web site has some good info on it. You may want to check it out.

Talk about a case of mistaken identity! Elson Haas, M.D., in his breakthrough dieting book 'The False Fat Diet' lays out a convincing argument that losing what has always been derisively labeled as "water weight" may just be what's needed before someone can experience true fat loss. This is not the type of water loss associated with diuretics or diet pills. Nor is it the fat flushing associated with a ketogenic diet where unmetabolized ketones as free fatty acid metabolites are excreted in the urine. This is the elimination of bloating, swelling, and puffiness as reactive food chemicals are flushed from your body. As the chemicals leave, your body no longer finds it necessary to surround them with water (as an inflammatory response), in order to protect you from what the body perceived as foreign invaders. "False Fat" according to Haas is systemic edema (water bloat) caused by food reactions that may appear to an observer as "fat" or adipose tissue. Eliminating food allergens from your diet may give you an immediate weight loss of several pounds in so called water weight! But unlike most other weight loss programs, THIS water weight loss will remain permanent as long as you don't indulge in the offending food

In laymans terms...the more high salt processed food you ate before starting SBD is relected in your water weight. A good friend of mine dines on Prepackaged boil for 5 minutes rice and pastas, Canned soups, potato chips etc. She would probably loose a lot of water weight because her diet was/is high in salts and foreign substances like perservatives.
Does this make sense?

You lose more water weight when you drink lots of water because you are flushing out salts, which water clings to. This was my trick before weigh-in day at Weight Watchers - drink a gallon of water and lose 3 pounds. What a cheater! You do spend a lot of time in the loo.

It also works before your period to prevent bloat.

I also can lose up to 6 pounds (maybe more in a marathon?) in one morning after a long run in the summer (it gets REALLY hot here). That's very dangerous though. In that case you need to EAT salt.

When your body feels it is not getting enough water, it starts storing salt. The reason why it does this is that when your tissue has a high salt concentration, you absorb more water from your food (and water is what your body is ultimately looking for).

When you drink lots of water, the body doesn't feel the need to store salt in an effort to hord water.

Essentially, bloating is your body's way of stockpiling water. If you give it enough water, it won't feel the need to retain it.

When you go on a low-carb plan, and SBD is still pretty low-carb in Phase 1, your body does not have the same amount of readily accessible energy that it is used to. So one of the places your muscles turn to for replacement energy is the glycogen stores in your muscle fiber. Glycogen also tends to bind with water in roughly a 4-to-1 ratio (water to glycogen). So as you use up your glycogen stores in your muscles, they "release" up to four times as much water as well. This also accounts for the rapid weight loss on a low-carb intake program during its initial phases and is also commonly known as "water weight".

So you would drink a gallon of water during the day, your body would flush that water plus more, and you would lose three pounds?

I need to try that the next time I go to the doctor. LOL
