I've looked at this diet before, but I love the South Beach diet so much.
I need something to eat that is quick, easy and inexpensive. I have no problems eating the food on south beach, id eat a SBD meal over a hamburger any day... but the hamburger is cheaper, faster and easy (which completly stinks!)
Anyways, I wanted to ask what ya'll thought-
http://www.nutrisystem.com/?IID=1300
The foods are supposedly low on the GI index and its just quick and easy. Back in the day when I was an obese child, I had great success with Jenny Craig because the foods were prepackaged and ready to go...
Any opinions about this? |

I didn't try it full on, only ordered enough food for 1 week (got it off amazon.com I think).
A week was not long enough to notice any weight change, but I was doing just a week to work out if I could eat the food or not.
Some of the food is just plain disgusting.. I mean.. I threw it out and went hungry. The parts which were the worst was the breakfast. I tried to eat one of their "muffins" totally gross. They had little paper containers with powdered egg in them, you just add hot water and wait. I don't know what went wrong, but it never ended up being more than some powdered bits floating around in eggy water. NOT nice!
I liked some of the little "canned" foods, but I really just felt like I was eating ration packs. The servings were also very small.
If you would want to, i'd suggest just trying some of the foods, deciding which ones you like, then gettting a customized pack.
My problem with it was that the customized menu's seemed to be only if you bought a month's supply.
Anyhow, that was my take on it :D |

| Many moons ago I did this, it was exspensive and as soon as you ate anything not provided by them you were pretty much in trouble. Gained everything back and then some when I stopped because I had know idea how to eat anything other than what they provided. |

I did nutrisystem a while back... and I didn't lose any weight, but I lost a lot of money. Again, you need to remember... prepackaged foods contain so much in the way of preservatives, fillers and extenders that the water weight you gain will sabotage any weight loss.
It's expensive and not at all worth it, in my opinion. |

Anything that exspensive should at least taste like real food IMO  |

Amen to that!
Well, here's the thing, too. Unless you're planning on remaining on their plan, eating their food, for the rest of your natural life, at some point, you need to learn how to eat "real" foods. Once you do that, bam! Right between the eyes. Now, because you're switching from a diet to a common sense approach to food (a la SB), it becomes a yo-yo situation. You mess up your metabolism, it's harder for you to lose the weight.
Any artificial means to losing weight is just that... artificial. And you will suffer in the long run. |

| Oh I didn't catch that you wanted to switch between the two or do a half and half deal. It won't work nutrisystem works (and that is hugely debatable) only if you eat their foods and only their foods. You'd really be throwing your money down the toilet. If convience is your thing get the divide storage containers that you can but in the freezer and microwave and make your own TV dinners I do up a bunch on Sundays for the week days I just can cook on. |

| Currently, I am doing nutrisystem, but I also throw in a few South Beach pizzas or bars, or the wraps in there too. I picked NS because I have a 2 yo DD and don't always have time to prepare special meals for me. I didn't care for some of the foods so I exchanged them and they sent back what I wanted. Breakfast is the hardest..I don't like much except the cereals and the granola bars. The soups, pizzas, tacos, rotini w/ meatballs, BBq Beef are all pretty good. Sometimes I have a Zone Bar for lunch or a SLim Fast Optima shake for lunch if I am on the go. It's really portion control and right fats and right carbs. Every night as my dessert I have NS chocolates! They are yummy and I also have a SF Fudgsicle as a freebie every day too. Some people started on NS to help them get going and they slowly (after learning how to eat healthier) got off NS, but used their own food instead. BTW, you can delay shipments). Like I said I have eaten SBD foods while doing NS too. I have lost 19 lbs in the last 3 weeks and it is just melting off. Now..I have a lot more to lose so someone who only needs to lose 20 lbs..it won't come off as quickly, but my moods have improved, I am not hungry at all, my clothes are getting too big for me, and I feel better. I am not as tired. Personally, it's really easy. I allow 1 cheat day a week and it's always either Sat. or Sun. I allo wmyself to cheat all day, BUT I don't because my mind and body don't really feel like cheating. I do cheat though, but it's usually 1 meal and a cappucino or something similar. I don't exercise a whole lot either. I try to do it 3x a week (30 min. walking tapes 2x a week and 30 mins on elliptical trainer for 1x a week.) The conveience is great. It's free to join the website. Once you join go to Community and then click NS Members: check out..miannyc, losinandcrusin, and christinagray2003-she does it w/o NS food OH and DOveloft-she lost 127 lbs in 8 months. I think you can lose both ways. |

Oh wow! Thanks guys for all the replies
I love the SBD.. i think its wonderful.. and its not that its difficult to do.. but here is the thing-
My dad owns his own business so money is either there, or its not. Sometimes he has money for me to buy groceries, other times Im scraping up money for gas/food
This past week I havn't been doing SBD cuz I have literally no money. I spend about $5 a day on fast food and I HATE it.
The reason why I want thought about doing nutrisystem is:
1. My dad can come up with $300 for a months worth of food.. and some extra cash for veggies n stuff. As opposed to "Dad, I need $60 to go to the store this week... dad I need $75 to go to the store.... Dad, I need $50 to go to the store". Cuz sometimes, its just not there.
2. When I did Jenny Craig a while back, I did really well with the prepackaged meals (i seriously can eat anything!) and I figure this would be helpful with being in college and not having the time or energy to cook food.
And, the nutrisytem won't be a way of life for ever. Once Im at a comfortable position with my weight.. I plan to ween off of it and go back to the SBD.. and continue to lose that way. And hopefully I will be out of school in a year and will have my own income to buy food =o) |

Now you've got me curious... why is "food" separate from "veggies n stuff". |

| 5 dollars makes a pot of chili or bean soup for a week or two bags of frozen veggies so fast food shouldn't be a factor. I'm not sure what you all are buying for 300 or whether where you live is factoring heavily into the cost but with carefull planning and some budget stretching meals you and your dad should both be eating well. There isn't to much on SB that my family doesn't enjoy (except brown rice) so cooking seperate meals isn't really necessary. Maybe you both need to sit down and look at the budget. Just a thought. |

| Actually, if you do autoship on NS it's like $278 and you get a free week of food. YOu can also ask someone to email you a $15.00 coupon and use it towards that. Your other shipments will go down price wise as well and if you click on the "daily dose" every day you will get another $!0 coupon (after 50 clicks). I think my first shipment was $278 and my second was $264..my next one will be cheaper. You can delay or cancel autoship at anytime w/ no penalty. I may switch to SBD after I lose most of the weight or I may just wean off the NS and use my own food. I do dabble her and there with that as well now, but until I lose more I am afraid to do it. I use alot of SBD recommended products as well. I just need the convenience of ready meals because I am very bust right now. Whatever you do best of luck! |

Produce goes bad, so I have to go to the store once a week, week and a half to stock up on my weekly veggies.. thats what I meant by that.

Its hard to explain my dad and money but i'll try.
My dad owns his own business and he works (physically) very hard for about 16-18 hours a day. He doesn't have a fixed income, so figuring out a budget is REALLY difficult. Because what money he has varies every day. He pays for:
*Land taxes in Weatherford, Tx. (land my parents bought, plan to sell)
*Land taxes in Dallas, Tx. (house they are building on)
*House payment in Euless, Tx. (the house that caught on fire, fixing up to rent)
*Rent payment in Ft.Worth (the house they are living in now)
*My sisters private school tuition
*My sisters medication
*My bills (fortunatly my grandpa pays for my rent)
*Their bills
I just feel so, so guilty to ask him for money- ever. Right now I "fill up" my gas tank $4 at a time. And with the nutrisystem, its easier for him to get me $300 for nutrisystem food as opposed to $300 for groceries all month because what will happen is even if I don't spend that $300 and I set it aside.. I still need gas money, ill use it to pay some bills and before you know it, its gone.
So, I will do this diet really well for a while.. then I run out of food and my dad has no money to give me at the moment.
Sorry to dump all of that on ya'll. Im just trying to find a middle ground with my dads money and weight loss. |

| Not a problem, I'm 36 in college and only work 12 hours a week because of classes and my bum leg so I totally understand about the asking for money thing it just about kills me even if its for a necessity to call home. I gave my check book and credit cards to my mom she also has control of my grant/loan checks because they are direct deposited. The reason being One- I get so wrapped up in course work and research that I forget to pay the bills so if she has them all the bills get paid. Two- she buys a sam's and wal-mart gift card so that I can buy groceries all semester (I tend to give money away to homeless people and charities forgeting that I need to eat too). Since your talking about buy 300 dollars of nutrisystem up front why not just get a gift card to the grocery store of your choice that way you have money for food and you can't spend it on anything but food. Just a thought. I know nutrisystem seems like a good idea but trust me bad idea, been there done that its a short term answer that doesn't always work. Good luck with whatever you decide. |

| I agree with PhD 2 B. Buy a gift card and learn to like cabbage soup! $300 for just you at a grocery store should get you through 2-3 months if you budget it properly. Shamelessly clip coupons and shop ads! It can be done. |
