Avatars are the small image that appears under your name if you choose to use one. They are limited in size to something that is 80 pixels by 80 pixels and 6 kilobytes in size. There are several ways to get one. The easiest way is to go into your Profile and go the bottom of the page where the Avatar control panel is. The last choice is "Select Avatar from Gallery" and there is a button to "Show Gallery". This will take you to the forum's library of avatar images and there are 4 pages of choices. Select any one of those by clicking on the little radio button selection and click "save" or "submit" on the bottom of the page and then that image will appear under your name in all your posts.
All of the other options involve using your own image or linking to an existing image somewhere else on the Net and are probably more confusing to you. If you think you want to give it a try though, leave a post here and let me know and I can probably write up an explanation if you need one.
The important thing is to NOT link to a ticker image as your avatar as those are too wide and push everything off to the right of the page. Tickers should only go in your signature areas. |

Ok redroxco, I'll bite. This avatar thing is driving me crazy. How do I post the one I want? I can't seem to make the forum recognize that I'm linking to one outside.
It's starting to make me cranky. |

Why don't you post the URL you are trying to link to? Maybe I can try it first and see if I can figure out what the issue might be. Maybe it is a size issue? If it is simply a size issue, if they allow the image to be downloaded, I might be able to save it, resize it, and then email it to you.
In general, you should be able to just enter the URL of the outside avatar in the field, "Link to off-site Avatar:", but it sounds like you have already tried that and it isn't working. |

In theory, it sounds like any idiot should be able to do this, right? Soooo frustrating!

I figured it would be easier to host the damn thing instead of uploading it from my machine, because NEITHER option appears to work. I think I'm destined to be avatar-less.
Thanks for your help, RedRox. |

hey I just saw that you replied! Sorry I didn't see it sooner. Maybe it is something in the way that tinypic hosts their images? I tried that link to upload and it came back that there was nothing there to upload. If I try and right click on it to save it to my PC so I can check the pixel size, I just comes up as "view.html" as the file to save, so it is not like there is a picture "there" from a file point of view. I'll send you a PM with my yahoo email and you can send me the file from there and I can check the size of it and see if there is anything simple and easy I can do.
Or you could try hosting it somewhere else other than tinypic and maybe that would make a difference. You could try the Image Shack at http://imageshack.us/index3.php and maybe they host it differently in terms of the how the link and file is presented to the outside world?
But you are definately right! It doesn't work as is!! ;) |
