What is the eat to live diet?

It is a scientifically based diet with a lot of research to back it up. It encourages large amounts of vegetables and fruit, smaller amounts of whole grain and beans, lowest amounts of meat and cheese. He actually rewrites the food pyramid and puts the plant foods at the bottom. And I have lost another pound

Fuhrman knocks SB and obviously has not read the book! I do however think his way of eating is healthy, but his is not the only way to achieve optimum health. He touts SB as a fad diet and IMHO and that of my doctor, he is so wrong!

Congrats!! While I am sure he structures it differently, you really could say pretty much the same thing for SB. It all depends on how you implement it. SB clearly relies on far more veggies than meats for instance, although not everyone seems to see it that way. And although cheese is more of a staple in P1, you can do SB without eating a lot of cheese in P2. I normally have 1 string cheese and 1 small wedge of LC lite on a typical day. I "felt" like I was eating too much cheese at first and made a choice to cut back on it which is still all within the overall guidelines and framework of SB. And although SB tends to seem to "weight" grains and fruits about equally, most people seem to find they are better off maximizing the fruits if they can and cutting back on the whole grains if they need to cut back somewhere.

Also wondering if Fuhrman addresses the GI connection to foods that keep us from becoming hungrier? GI, as is being discussed in another thread, is neither particularly a new concept, nor a SB "discovery". Rather it is just one more piece of the puzzle that SB incorporates into its overall recommendations and food lists that help it succeed. I must admit though it wasn't something even on my radar screen before I started SB. And it really deserves to be better understood by the everyday person, whether dieting or not, in terms of how foods affect them.

I don't think there is a lot of groundbreaking dietary plans out there. They all seem to converge in a similar area with lots of vegetables first and foremost and then some combination of fruits, whole grains, and lean protein sources. The structures and emphasis may change from one program to another, but healthy foods kind of remain healthy foods!

This diet is more for vegetarians. Joel limits animal food products. To each his own I guess but nobody is going to tell me not to eat my cheese, milk and meat!!!! He also claims that SBD is a heavy animal food diet which it's not really true.

All these doctors are just trying to make a fast buck so they are going to bash all the other diets out there. Of course you are going to lose more weight by not eating animal products but not everyone is a vegetarian.

I say if it works for you then great but not every diet is going to work for everyone.

I concur. I think most healthy diets rely on fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and low fat dairy and lean meats. I am not a vegetarian, but I have cut way back on animal products and that seems to be working for me. Dr. Fuhrman does bash SB but he also recommends several other diets as being healthy. I say whatever works for you, do it.
