Congrats on your progress so far, you look terrific... sorry to hear about your accidents-- I used to work as a specialist in a spine surgery unit, so I can imagine the pain you must have suffered.

Good for you for taking control and good luck reaching your goal!

Toese, I lived in Hawaii for 5 1/2 years. I lived in Waianae on Oahu for 3 1/2 years and then lived in Kalaheo on Kauai for 2 years. I moved to the mainland in 2001. I love the islands and hope to return one day soon. We moved for work but I still consider it my home. What island did you live on?
Thanks Scottiesmom! I know I am the luckiest girl to have such a wonderul man in my life. I truly try to never take him for granted!!!
Thank you Vanessa for the support!!!

I lived on Maui in '91 and then from '92 to 2000 I lived in Waikiki Ala Moana side of Ohau. What were you doing in Waianae??

Toese, I was working for a non-profit organization that ran out of the old Sheraton Makaha. It was fun for a while but then I decided to move to Kauai where I was a waitress at the Sheraton Kauai and was a Preschool Teachers Aide. It's so funny whenever I would tell people I lived in Waianae they would always ask why? There is not alot out there and for me being a little white girl I really stuck out when I first moved there. They all knew me as Haoli girl! hee hee! But I made some great friends there!
So you were over on the other side of the island? I bet you miss it too. Do you have any plans to move back there?

Ok I will tell you my story. I first lived in Kiehi, HI (maui) w/ my sister and her DH. After a year living there I moved to Oahu. Funny thing my guy friend lives in Waianae so I was there for a couple of weeks till I found a place on Kapiolani Blvd one of the high rises. I worked at the Outrigger Canoe Club as the front desk girl, went to Kapioloani Community College, Then worked at Liberty House the one in Waikiki. Then moved up on Wilhemina Rise then moved into my own studio in Waikiki. Quit working at LH and worked in a clothing Boutique store as a manager Ala Moana area and then Geico and then HMSA Then moved to Ala Moana side across the park/beach.

In 2000 we moved to the mainland.

I didn't want to raise my kids there because the private schools are way too expensive and I really don't want to put them in public schools so I don't think we will move back there anytime soon. maybe after they graduate. They are only 3 and 4!!!

That is so fun! We lived there at the same time. I was on Oahu from 96-99. Isn't the Outrigger Canoe Club where Dukes is? If so we used to go there all the time to see this guy Makana. How funny!
I think you made a good decision about your childrens' education. I am in school right now for a elementary education degree and realize how behind Hawaii's public schools are. It would be hard to put your kids into the public schools.

You are thinking of the Outrigger Hotel. The Outrigger Canoe Club is a private beach paddling club. It's across the street from Kapiolani Park.

Yeah, and their private schools are so expensive!!!!! I really miss it over there though. I just miss walking out the door and it's another beautiful day and it's just steps away from the beach!!!! I also miss the FOOD!!!! I miss wearing shorts everyday and I miss my year round tan!!!

How was it for you to make friends over there. Did the girls seem a little different over there compared to the mainland??

kalaheogirl

Your right, I was thinking about the hotel. Ohhh! Lomi Lomi Salmon and one scoop rice! Doesn't that sound good!
As far as making friends, it was a little bit intimidating in the beginning but I met a older woman who became my Auntie Gwen. She introduced me to all of her friends and family and I just always maintained a willingness to learn about their culture. One thing most Hawaiians hate about people from the mainland is they think they know everything. They talk too much and are not willing to listen. Even though I still had some girls that just did not like me because I was white, Oh well!

You need to make a journal thread so we can talk more about Hawaii, I can talk all day about it. To me the girls that I knew were a little bit superficial. You know they had to wear ferragamo shoes, gucci handbag and so on. I used to work in cosmetics so most of my friends were a little inot all that kind of stuff. I also had some local friends too, they were a little rough but they always made me laugh. I never had any color issues at all. They always thought of me as being local because I never acted like the typical haouli blonde. You are right about what most of them think about the mainlanders and it's true. When I worked at a resort on maui they all thought they were suppose to be treat like royalty and I couldn't stand the tourists either.

Anyways: you can chat with me in my journal if you like. The link is at the bottom of my post!!!
