Hi everyone, thanks for this page.
I am struggling with blood sugars on this first week of Phase 1
I am a type two diabetic, my afternoons are finding me in the shakes and feeling so very unwell.. . blood sugar readings in the high 2's or very lo 3's
Normally I would have taken some carb if this happened but now of course cannot. Does anyone have this problem and what are you doing about it?
thanks

I think they often recommend diabetics start with P2. Hopefully someone will be around soon to confirm or deny that.

Yes - best to skip Phase 1 because your blood sugars are getting too low. Make sure you eat a good carb with each meal - dairy, beans, veggies count as carbs as well as grains and fruit.

If you are taking medicine for type 2 diabetes then you really need to be under the supervision of your doctor for South Beach. Your medication is probably wrong for this change in your diet.

What are 2's and 3's? My BG level's are between 90 and 150 generally. Maybe you ar e using a different method of measure. Good luck

Hi again, thanks for the idea of going to phase 2...did not see that in the big book....but it sure makes sense to me.
It was my Dr.(Cardiologist/vascular surgeon) who wants me on this programme so I am ok there..he did it and lost 80 pounds. I am in a rather compromised health state now so he hopes weight loss(hopefully 50 pounds) will help quality of life because I am too high risk for surgery...(heart and lung).
If any of you know anything more or have any more suggestions I will be pleased to hear from you...I doubt that I am the only diabetic on the SB.
Yes, I guess that our readings are different here in Canada.
Good luck to all of us ....and thanks again.

Also check for posts and support in the Health and Medical forum here as well. A number of the threads there deal with diabetic issues too. Good luck!!

As an aside, it seems strange that your Doc would recommend SB, but fail to mention you should start with P2.

Well, I think the problem was that her Cardiologist/Vascular surgeon suggested the new diet. But she needs to work with her endocrinologist or whomever is helping her manage her diabetes to figure out the best way to do SBD. Cardiologists do not treat diabetes.

patc - you may be mistakenly eating fewer carbs than the SB diet recommends. Make sure you get good carbs at every meal and eat snacks that include good carbs. This should help you manage your blood sugar. In Phase 1 you get good carbs from dairy (milk or yogurt), vegetables and beans. In Phase 2 you can also eat fruit and grains.

But if you are on medication that helps lower your blood sugar, that medicine is probably incompatible with SB Phase 1 right now. You need to work with whomever prescribed you your medicine.

If you aren't on medication then you simply need to eat more carbs. A lot of people mistakenly think SBD is a low-carb diet and avoid them. SB is a low-GI carb diet - plenty of carbs, just limited to the low-GI ones. There is a world of difference here.
